Yes we are real people. There are those who believe in the myth of anonymity on the Internet which might make some feel emboldened, but those of us who are former system administrators, know that there is no anonymity without some active measures, and pretty esoteric ones at that, being taken by the parties involved.

I still have contacts in the NOC’s of local and national ISP’s that could give me info if I had a good reason to ask.

What protects most people is that no one in a position to know the details of your real name and position, gives a rats patoot who you are or what you say or do on the net.

The boring details of your life pretty much hold no interest for me so until there are credible threats or evidence of a crime, you can continue to feel anonymous.

Real threats via the internet are from spyware, malware, rootkits and zombies but these are not really aimed at you personally. They are more like a net cast to scoop up the slow or unwary fish.

The congress is about to make legal a very real and yet, to most, abstract threat to us all collectively with the telecom immunity bill, but that is unlikely to become evident to most until it is too late. I don’t understand why Republicans want the telcos or the government to have this abrogation of the 4th amendment when there is a very real chance of a Democrat in the white house soon. I don’t want any executive to be able to ignore congress or bypass the judiciary.

If someone was a shill for a roofer, they have more to fear from being exposed as such in this forum than they have the chance of gain from one or two roofing jobs.

Never take recommendations as the only criteria for choosing a building trades contract. Always check the license data against the state database and get a list of references from the company or contractor.

Jerald, a couple months ago I was researching reviews for a particular brand of makeup. I found the exact same review, word for word, on three different Internet sites…obviously somebody paid by the company to write it. I didn’t buy the product.

I try to judge reviews and recommendations by the smell test—if it smells fishy, I figure it probably is a shill. Like if it sounds like ad copy, or is too stilted or formal, or uses words everyday people don’t usually use.

I get the feeling most of us here at WSB are pretty real, though.

In regards to lattemom not being a troll, at least if she was a troll we could say she was saying all of this stuff because she was trying to get us riled up. But if she is indeed not a troll and she is still saying all of this and she truly believes it then I’m pretty sure that just makes her an bigot. So I hope she is a troll because bigots are much more dangerous.

When my nephew was 10 months old he was attacked and bitten by the family dog. He needed to plastic surgeries to repair the damage to his face. The family bought the dog from a breeder (a long time friend of the family) with a good reputation when it was 8 weeks old. The dog was trained, well loved and never abused and yet for no apparent reason the dog seriously injured a child who had nothing to arouse the dog except walk by at the wrong time. The dog was a labrador retriever one of the most popular dog breeds for families. You cannot judge an individual dog’s temperament on breed (just as you cannot judge an individual person on race). Kudos to those of you who recognize your Cujos and deal with them appropriately. The sad reality is some people do not make informed decisions when choosing a pet. All dogs can be dangerous (personally, I am far more fearful of the toy or miniature breeds than I am of the large breeds) and should never be off-leash in a public place unless it is in an off-leash dog parks. I know I will receive flack about this but let’s face it folks dogs are predators we have domesticated. It is a tribute to the canine’s good-natured acceptance of us that we don’t have more bites and attacks.

And in reference to Lattemom I know she is NOT a troll. She truly believes what she writes. She will always attack when she feels cornered i.e., whenever anyone disagrees with her. Trying to have a reasonable discussion with her on any topic is impossible. She is incapable of seeing anything beyone herself. Let us all hope she gets the help she truly needs.

We’ve noticed it too, consistently actually since we moved in. It actually is a little alarming since it reminded me of how the house smelled years ago before we had our furnace checked and found out it wasn’t venting properly and could have killed us! But maybe it’s just someone’s old oil heater?

A friend told me yesterday she was going to consider using a roofer (or something like that) because she’d read a recommendation here on the WSB. She said she liked getting an honest, local recommendation.

At first I thought, that’s nice, and then I started to wonder. How confident can we be that these are legitimate individuals, not shills for a particular company/service. (I think there’s a computer-jargon word for this, but I’m not that current.)

Is there a way to maintain this blog’s “purity” or is it destined to become corrupted by the big bad world outside West Seattle?

mjd.. my little cujos are shiba inus which are really just japanese rat terriers in a different package and not as easy going… my hubby would love to take them to work with him and could… but thought better of it since either dogs or people are always there and one dog is good with people and the other with dogs:)

as for a dress code.. i asked him what his boss wore to work. Baggy shorts and sandals or trainers… year round. hubby is actually way over dressed in chinos… tho not likely to change the dressing habits of a lifetime:)

all that… downtown… for one of the biggest companies in Seattle. imagine that;-)

Hmmm, at my office we have two dogs that are at work nearly every day,nd have been for the last 5 years. A jack russel terrier and a pit bull. There aren’t too many people in our office(less than 15) and everyone is more than okay with having the dogs at work.

Other than my own dog (a pug), I have never met a sweeter pup than the pit bull. The jack russel clearly has anger issues, but we don’t mind too much b/c he’s small and for the most part harmless. In fact, on days when I know that the J R won’t be in the office I bring my pug in to play with the pit bull. There are nice pit bulls out there. (And Jack Russels too, just not the one in my office (: )

Just because I see that people in general downtown Seattle dress sloppy, kids wear baggy disgusting pants showing their bottoms, I don’t care to be harassed while eating with my family, that I do not care for aggressive dogs, that if people want the freedo of the U.S. they should at the very least learn the English language, hey why not they get all the priviledges of an American born Citizen when they get their Visa’s, Look who is calling the kettle black lady!

JanS, you missed my point totally, I was not talking about people who work at home, just people working Downtown Seattle. We don’t go Downtown much anymore since having to deal with the smokers and the homeless we go to the mall.

The parks – any of them – would be good. I think you can get a permit for adult beverages. Also, any of the halls – Alki Masonic, Hiland Park Improvement, VFW, etc.

Actually, I did tell him one morning when we met that we don’t have aluminum cans. We very rarely buy soft drinks in cans. However, he continues to dig through every other week.

I guess it’s one of those things that will just annoy me but that I don’t feel strong enough to do anything about.

Bill Clinton campaigned on a platform of change… tho he/they were unable to make the kinds of changes they wanted.

that experience taught hillary that she couldn’t make the kinds of changes she wanted to make without learning how to play washington politics.

the truth is that a vote in the house or senate is always for sale. Unless they are sponsoring a bill, none of them will commit to vote for anything (even if they believe in it) without getting some favor for their vote. It isn’t how it should be.. but it is how it is.

I wish it there would be a new game… but this process is too well entrenched to give up without one heck of a fight… and that may take generations. You have to play the game that exists.. not the one you wish did.

the thing that would be different with this Clinton presidency is that there is a very good possibility that this president will have a congress they can actually work with… and imagine what somebody who knew how to play the game could do with that.

that to me speaks more of hope than anything in this campaign. Someone who knows how to work the system and has the ability to get things done.

Perhaps we would finally get the chance to see the democratic agenda in action.

Did you know that Hillary and Bill were wide eyed idealists… both working deep within the democratic party when they started? i think younger than you at their first real experience at democratic power brokering… in Texas.

She is still a wide eyed idealist… who optimistically believes there has to be a way to get things done and keeps trying even when she runs into countless roadblocks.

she will literally work with anyone to accomplish her goals.

And more important.. after the beating they took in Texas.. she stayed in the game. (One i dropped out of…) and she learned how to play hardball. She truly believes you can change the system from within. She has spent her entire political career doing just that.

I have read both candidates websites… so i know what their platforms are… and where they differ, i think Hillary has a better grasp of the issues… but being an old gal who has seen more campaign promises broken than kept, i wanted to know what Obama has actually done.

I will tell you that the news is more promising than i thought.. tho his senate record (including who he chose to mentor with and his attempts at passing substantive bills) is not what one would hope for as an agent of change.

I agree that Obama sells. But he is going to have to sell a lot more than people’s enthusiasm for him and hope if he wants to beat McCain.

McCain has a reputation of being a tough independent and when the shouting is over and he has that nomination, he will go back to selling that image.. regardless of the fact that he sold it out in a heartbeat to get his chance at the presidency.

Let me tell you, it’s a pretty convincing image.

And he has equally good plans for almost everything except getting out of the war and the economy.

He knows how to play hardball… and has no qualms about doing so.

And he has a republican administration behind him to help time events to promote his agenda.

If it becomes the Obama campaign against the McCain campaign, this pretense of a clean and gracious campaign.. the political high road… will have to go because it just plain won’t stand up against the republican/McCain smear campaign. It won’t be a gentleman’s race.

If he has to campaign against McCain, you won’t get the same candidate you have now because he will have to adjust his rhetoric and his strategy to combat some of the dirtiest politicking available.

I am sorry new resident and any other republican toes i stepped on there… but i am just stating the obvious… the truth is that if you don’t win.. you never get a chance to either keep or break your campaign promises and nobody knows that better than John McCain.

and i am sorry if this offends obama supporters. I am not putting him down. i truly think he would make a great president in 4 to 8 years… but for now, i am am hoping the better woman gets a chance to get things done:)

Things are different from “when you worked 7 years ago.” Why don’t you get off your butt and get a job and then talk to me about what’s appropriate at work. Like hopey, I also work in the tech industry and no one cares what you wear when you’re behind a computer all day. If the freaking CEO wears jean shorts to work, I think it’s okay for me to wear jeans. I do own a suit which I have worn for interviews, but as soon as you’re in the door, you assimilate with company culture. Everyone would probably assume I was interviewing for another job if I showed up to work in a suit, lol.

I am not trying to bash Clinton I am trying to point out one of the strongest reasons why people of my in my age bracket our voting for Obama. ( I am 25). I think that a number of us have not spoken up in the past about who we think could when the past two elections and lets take a look around and see where that has gotten us. So yes the number one reason why I would like to see Obama come out ahead after the primaries is because I do think he can and will win. A few of the other reasons I support Obama include the fact that he seems more like the guy next door and someone you can open up to than Hillary. Furthermore, he would be change. And change is what we need. Lets take a look back for my entire lifetime starting since before i was born in 1982 we have had either a Bush or a Clinton in the White House. (Including VP’s) Now fast forward to today and take a look at where we are. Yes I like Hillary, I think she has great points, and I think she is an extremely positive role model for all women out there; however, i disagree that she is what we need. Take a look @ Obama’s web page if you have a chance he isn’t forgetting Healthcare, or kids, in fact he addresses each issue and has huge plans as to how to change the problems with in each of these issues. Maybe his biggest weakness is that he is not speaking out about them enough–but to me i think that plays into his hope campaign. that if he doesn’t over sell what he plans to change people will believe in him and have hope for our country!

True, Kayleigh. I have yet to meet a Democrat who really “gets” it. I say this smiling. We both have a lot of faith in our respective party.

And, believe me, I’m sure the Democratic party will get some Republican votes this year. However, I firmly believe that Democrats have a better chance of winning if it’s a McCain/Clinton race. I think more Republicans would be apt to vote for Clinton over Obama.
