I live on Vashon island and work downtown in a hotel. I have been commuting going on 20 years now. Over that time I have often contemplated selling my home and moving to the West Seattle area just to be closer to work and to cut down my commute time and save ferry costs but over the last few years the run away development of Multi storied town homes and apartment houses have in my estimation blighted the West Seattle area and especially on the Fauntleroy strip. I realize that this city needs more housing for its residents and newcomers but is it really necessary to tear everything down in the name of progress? Cant you leave a few pieces of our past so that current residents as well as new comers can see and feel a sense of our communities history and our sense of belonging? Ever since the city building and planning commission rezoned these areas the Developers have been in a building frenzy with no end in sight. One house after another is being demolished to make way for one more density increasing projects. The winners here are clear, the city gets a lot of revenue from the developers and more housing like it wants and needs and the developers have free reign to build one after another, built with little to no green space, no yards, little to no parking and pushing the buildings footprints right to the sidewalk then with a fat profit they move on to their next project. Its the residents who are left to live with and deal with the lasting effects as well as the sense of loss to the community. More often these units are boxy, unimaginative and leave much to be desired architecturally. The city and developers say that these projects lure in people who wont need a car and therefore no parking is included with many of these projects. I say that is BS for anyone who can afford a $700.000 condo or pay &2,000 a month and up for a small apartment I assure you that they own a car. Drive by these projects at night when their occupants are home asleep like I do on my way home and you will notice that there is no parking spots open anywhere!

Up till now I haven’t really been affected that is until one of my favorite old homes on Fauntleroy was targeted. I drove by this house for many years not even noticing it for it is well hidden from the street by large old trees. No doubt planted around the same time that the house was built. I knew that someday it would fall prey to a developer and that time has now come. When I drove past it a week or so ago I noticed that it was all boarded up and now sits empty. My heart sank knowing what is going to happen to this lovely old ranch style home. I did some research online and found that it was sold to a developer who has plans to demolish it to make room for 3 row houses. After more research I found that it was built in 1909, its over a century old and although its previous owners neglected it over the years it still looks to be in sound condition. It would take a lot of time, effort and money to restore it to its former glory. Had they kept it up it might have fetched a decent price and been purchased by someone who saw its historical value and it would be assured to stand for many more years to come but Unfortunatley in its condition the land it sits on is much more valuable, especially ,after the city opened up the floodgates for the developers by rezoning. As far as I know this home wasn’t even listed for sale on the market. No doubt the developers were drooling over this house for awhile and they finally offered the right amount of money to the owners. With that sale they signed this old houses death warrant. On both sides of it there are new townhomes. It stands out even more now for even in its neglected state it has so much more character and charm compared to the cheaply built, quickly erected, unimaginative and soulless projects that now surround it. I would have loved to buy a home like this before the building boom and when a developer offered me money for my home I would have told them to F off! When is enough enough? when all of our links to history are demolished? what sense of history do we have it we have nothing around to remind us of our past. I resent the fact that this house will soon be only a memory. The owner has the right to do what they see fit with it however I blame the city for not putting enough restrictions on the developers. We will lose many more historical homes and buildings because of this. Greedy homeowners will accept huge amounts of money for their property from opportunistic developers and there is no end in sight. I may not own this house, nor am I a direct neighbor but I appreciate it vey much. It was built 3 years before the Titanic sank for crying out loud. It saw horses and buggies going down Fauntleroy when it was new. The things it has seen over the years, the families it sheltered, in good times and in bad and soon it will be here no longer. Over 100 years standing and it will fall due to money, greed and the cities zoning change. I guess that I place a lot of value on the past. It was a different era, a simpler time and that house reflects that in its style and architecture and its durability. Not just another box but hand built, one of a kind built to last until now that is. I for one will feel a great sense of loss when it is gone. I see it like knocking over a grandmother, smashing her to pieces and hauling her remains to the dump and then building an ugly square box of a home on her grave. I doubt any of these cheaply built eyesores will be around in a hundred years like this house has stood. If you are interested in seeing it I suggest that you do so before its gone. Its at 5447 Fauntleroy Ave SW across from the school and park. Its a classic ranch design 1,500 square feet 2 story 3 bedrooms 1 bath. Nice front and back yard. something that is now a thing of the past on Fauntleroy that is.

I will stay on Vashon island because even though its a farther commute and it is quite costly at least I don’t have to worry about this kind of development around my home. Some may like these new structures, young folks who work alot and don’t want a yard to keep up but many folks, me included will stay away from these neighborhoods because the development has run out of control and they will choose to live somewhere that’s not so oppressive. So once this house is leveled I wont look over there anymore when I drive by for all that will be in its place will be another ugly box with no character. Such a shame. I personally will mourn its loss. Some look at it as old and run down and in need of demolishon but many like me still love and cherish this type of home, its a shame that the city planners and developers don’t.

Bought in 2004, used about 8-10 times, Hollywood spare tire bike rack that holds 2 bikes easily. Could squeeze a third on perhaps if a child’s bike. Easy to use and load bikes on…simply put, it just works. It’s not heavy at all, it fits easily over the spare tire and when not in use, bike holding arms fold flush against the device so you don’t have to take it off the vehicle when not transporting bikes. But, when you do take it off to store in the garage, the whole thing folds completely flat so it can hang from a hook on the garage wall and not stick out at all. They retail for around $150 new. Got a different car without the spare tire so no need for this style of rack anymore.
Happy to send pics if desired (hanging in the garage right now but I don’t have a tire anymore to put it on for best viewing) but it looks generally like the pictures in this forum post (http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/general-discussion/151148-spare-tire-bike-rack-hollywood-racks-sr1.html), except no tie downs just above each frame holding depression. I used bungees and extra length of straps that are used to tighten the rack to the tire. Never had any problems with movement. Only asking $50.

    Hi everyone-

It took a long time (because of the season and the cost – the main tree was an expensive undertaking – a 90 year old corkscrew willow) we ended up hiring Michael Oxman.

He was great- no pressure to rack up more work – which our yard can surely use, and must look like a goldmine to any arborist/landscaper- but we can’t afford. No pressure to start right away, no criticism for our lack of maintenance – and most important – he truly understands trees. He explained when the best time was to trim and why. He and his crew showed up in not just pouring, but driving rain, climbed up and into the tree in a way that was magical and were happy to be there.

And now, our tree looks like it can breathe again. Our neighbors (and we) are no longer worried about the safety hazards of the way too high branches hanging dangerously close to the power lines, our yard is no longer littered with dead twigs and small branches that used to drop by the dozens, and in general the tree looks healthy.

Thanks to everyone for the referrals. It is great to get advice from experience, and especially to support local. Michael and his crew, which included his son, were grateful for our business. As dense as Seattle is getting, good customer service and a happy, friendly face get lost in the rush of services offered. It’s tough to find a good one and I appreciate the recommendations and the blog for making it happen.

    Hi There-
Any recommendations for a firm that can put in sod in a side yard that no longer has grass? I was given the name of Devonshire Landscapes but they apparently only take jobs that are a minimum of $10K. I have also reached out to a local landscape firm for a bid, but i’d like to get a couple. Have you had this done within the last few years and are you happy with the work? I’d like to hear about it:-) Thanks!

Hi – two things: PLEASE always call 911 when you think you hear gunshots. Police say that over and over again. And then please let us know! Many things happen off scanner and we continue to be reliant on and appreciative of tips, 24/7 (206-293-6302, text or voice), no matter how speculative.

That aside, this is the first I’ve heard of it, but I can tell you that no one was shot – no medical responses (and when it’s a shooting or stabbing, the call is always classified “assault with weapons” on the SFD log), for one. No medical calls of ANY kind in WS overnight, in fact.

On the Twitter log of police calls, there is nothing classified as gunfire, but in order for that classification to be given, there must be either casings found, or damage found, or a victim. There’s one “disturbance, other” call in Arbor Heights overnight – time stamps on the Twitter log lag by a few hours – which could be it, provided someone did call 911. – TR

    skeeter..
we lost imoto over a year ago to cancer and yuki is approaching his final days so he doesn’t feel the loss of being able to walk in our city’s parks as much as i do… so i no longer have as much opportunity to speak out.. except to the people who pass my front gate with their unleashed animals..

this is a huge problem. i am not sure i will go back to the parks once he is gone.. i am not as steady as i once was and friends who are falling aren’t faring so well these days :( I can’t easily recover from being knocked over any more.

but this isn’t just about those of us who are knocked over or bitten by other people’s unleashed dogs… it’s about the dogs too. I still drive past more than one of our city’s parks and often have to slam on my brakes to avoid a dog who has darted into the roadway…

walking your pet unleashed is not doing them any favors.. you may want to run free but when your pet does so they are likely to encounter dangers you didn’t anticipate… with fatal consequences.

I am not a dog owner. I had a cat once or twice. Latest is gone now. When I go out and about walking, I use a walker mostly, sometimes a cane. Due to health issues( and, geez, 71 now – when did that happen?), I am sometimes not very sturdy on my feet. I haven’t encountered an off leash dog in my neighborhood yet, but I suspect I would freeze if I did, if they were coming at me. I would simply be afraid to move, knowing that I would probably end up on the ground. It saddens me that this is an ongoing problem, exacerbated by a new attitude in this country that it’s OK to be rude, OK to break the rules, to be hateful when approached. We all talk about how much we love West Seattle because it’s a real community, because everyone is friendly, helpful, etc. More and more it seems not so much to me. That, too, saddens me.

Eh, I’m starting to sound like the “get off my lawn lady” – lol.

    Keep speaking out…please:)

I live across the street from Element 42, attached to Admiral Safeway. There was one apartment who was home to a pup (about 440 sq. ft.), and this little critter barked all day long. Both myself and my neighbors kept at the management, and eventually the barking (and the dog, I presume) stopped. I felt sorry for the poor dog, but was annoyed, too. This is our world now. …all about”me, me, me” and it seems the rest of the world out there bedamned. It’s just sad.
