First, I’d recommend Keithly Electric. They’re located in South Park and their residential team is fantastic!

Now I’ll tell you something that one of their electricians will likely tell you: it’s not likely an issue with you panel, it’s more likely, if you’re tripping your main, that your service needs to be upgraded. Your main panel would feed the sub panel so this removes no load from the main. I would presume that you probably have a 125A service, right? You’d be better served (sight unseen and based only on your description) to get a service upgrade rather than just move some circuits around and it may even be less expensive. This would bump your service up to 200A and install a larger panel at your current location thus eliminating the need to relocate wiring.

These issues are coming up more frequently since many are switching to electric cars, electric heat/cooling, cooking, etc. These are the big loads that are the most likely source of overloading a service.

First, I recommend Keithly Electric. They’re located in South Park and they have a fantastic residential team!

Now I’ll give you a a bit of information that I suspect they’ll provide you: It’s likely that you need a service upgrade – more power, not more circuits – not just a sub panel. You may not even need a sub panel, just a new panel. If you’re tripping the main but not any of the other breakers, that means that, while none of the individual circuits are overloaded, your main service is overloaded.

Your main breaker rating is determined by the size of the feeder supplied by the utility, not the size if the breaker. If this is overloaded, as is indicated by the main tripping, then the feeder supplying your home is too small and also need to be upgraded, as doesn’t your meter.

What size is your main breaker? IS it 100A or 125A? I’d be surprised if it was 200A or 225A. You cannot get a service larger that 225A in Seattle without a variance (and it would be shockingly expensive). While I can’t reasonably estimate what these expenses will be I will say that a service upgrade, after permitting (yes, you’ll need permits for SCL to connect you) and other utility costs will be north of $3500…probably more since my knowledge of current costs are…dated.

Common causes of this are increased loads due to converting from a a gas appliance or heating to electric, adding a heat pump, etc. Consider what’s happening when the main trips. While it’s also possible that you have an intermittent fault, it’s possible that it’s just enough to put you over the line of the main.

Before you ask, I’m a licensed Master Electrician with 25 years of experience. I no longer work in the residential market and I’m not a contractor but I can certainly recommend.

If you have any other questions that I can answer please feel free to ask.

This is a fantastic opportunity to break into a trade that has an enormous array of options ranging from traditional construction of process automation and m. It can take you to remote corners of the globe (it took me to the South Pole for more than 18 months over two years) or keep you close to home.

How do I know, you ask? I, too, am a Master Electrician. It’s a field that’s treated me far better than I thought it would when I started 25 years ago and continues to do so. There will be a shortage of skilled trades for a generation so this is the time to get started and write your own ticket!

We purchased a generator (Kohler model RXT) for our home if the power goes out and would like an estimate for the cost to have it installed. We (husband) can do most of the prep work but we’d like for the electrical portion done by a professional! Please advise if you or you can recommend an electrician for this job.

    Thank you.

We have some knob and tube that still needs removing in a couple rooms, and we need to rewire for a new hood in our kitchen. A blog advertiser started the job, then came back for a rebid, then never responded—it’s been about 6 months, and we clearly need someone new. Any suggestions?

What do I have to do with this?

There is no shortage of good electricians in the WS or greater Seattle area. Just make sure that they are not just licensed electricians but licensed contractors who are bonded and insured.

You can look up contractors and individual electricians here to see if they are legit and if they have any outstanding violations, which I recommend.

I catch flack for what I’m going to say next but I’ll say it anyway: the vehicles matter. If you have a contractor or electrician show up to your home in some janky busted old van you are seeing the level of service you may receive in the future. I like to see clean service vehicles, preferably with the companies name on them and clean put together employees driving them. Long hair, beards, etc don’t bother me so much as their state. These things indicate, in my experience as a long haired bearded electrician, the state in which they will leave your property upon the conclusion of the work. While this isn’t always accurate it is often enough that I pay attention to it in my own hiring of contractors and subs.

Finally, it’s your house. If you have a contractor’s employee make you uncomfortable get rid of them. If the contractor isn’t cooperative in that then get another contractor. They work for you, you’re paying them and…IT’S YOUR HOUSE!

I used to be a PM for a large electrical contractor and I drove a service truck for many years, wrote scopes of work, proposals, estimates, etc, and I’ve been a licensed electrician for 19 years and a Master for 12 of them.

I would never request the quote from a competitor and, as a customer for subs I would’ve blacklisted a contractor for requesting the bid info from other contractors I had solicited a bid from.

Don’t use this contractor. Find another.

I don’t normally like to recommend do-it-yourself when someone asks for professional help, but depending on your situation, this could be an unusually cheap and easy DIY project. If you have your router close to your TV, you just need to buy an Ethernet cable from almost anywhere– even the hardware store in the Junction has them– and connect the cable to the jack that looks like a big telephone jack on the back of your TV to the same jack on your Wifi router. That’s it, and unless you have something crazy going on, your TV will detect the internet automatically.

If you still want a pro or want to do something like run a cable behind a wall, then I think that even the worst electrician could do it in 15 minutes.

You may want to dig into whether or not those numbers include costs other than just wages paid. Wages paid to electricians that are employed by the City of Seattle are about $40/hr and linemen earn about $50/hr. These numbers do not jibe with the actual people doing the work earn. This looks far more like a hatchet job.

    WHY SEATTLE IS IN TROUBLE
Only in Seattle do the tree trimmers make $160,000 per year!

Today, our investigation is an Editor’s Pick at Forbes: Why Seattle And Their Police Department Is In Trouble.

Our auditors dug into how Seattle is actually spending taxpayer dollars. We found:

    tree trimmers lopped off $160,604
    the chief librarian made $197,704
    electricians earned $271,070
    electrical lineworkers made $307,387
police officers earned up to $414,543
Last year, 601 city employees out-earned the mayor ($199,593), and the mayor out-earned 49 out of 50 state governors (top pay: $202,000).

The city council member ($131,336) leading the charge to defund the police made more than the members of the New York general assembly — the most highly compensated state legislature in the country ($130,000).
