    dawsonct..

i bathe every day. i live in a rental and am trying to figure out how to get my bathtub water out the small window 3/4 up the wall and into a barrel below.. thus cutting down on water use. the “safe” soaps i bathe in will act as natural pesticies.

    any practical advice here?

I’m not sure we ever got an ‘official’ story from Seattle Public Utilities on this. So, being curious I just called customer service.

They say as far as they know the only time the collection contractor will replace the bins is when they are damaged in some way. I suppose the contractor’s ‘call’ on what constitutes ‘damaged’ is variable.

Also, according to the SPU rep – the containers they’re being replaced with should be the same capacity, either 96 or 64 gallons as your old one. If it’s definitely not and you’re going to regularly fill your container you can request another at no extra charge.

We don’t get billed for recycling, just for yardwaste and garbage. If you only occasionally have a little extra recycling you can put it out next to the recycling can and they’ll pick it up for no extra charge.

‘Course what SPU tells us and the contractors actually -do- is a different story so if you do get weird charges – like for extra units of garbage (check your bill) call and complain.

I was getting extra charges for yardwaste – I had a 64-gallon can but am paying the 96 gallon rate so I was putting out an extra can of yardwaste.

They replaced my yardwaste can with a ’96-gallon’ size -but- the bin really doesn’t look much bigger than the old one! In truth – checking the bin manufacturer’s website it’s only 95 gallons. Shrug.

Some defended being on Social Security while fighting big government by saying that since they had paid into the system, they deserved the benefits.

Others could not explain the contradiction.

“That’s a conundrum, isn’t it?” asked Jodine White, 62, of Rocklin, Calif. “I don’t know what to say. Maybe I don’t want smaller government. I guess I want smaller government and my Social Security.” She added, “I didn’t look at it from the perspective of losing things I need. I think I’ve changed my mind.”

Light (or enlightenment) is the best disinfectant.

But if a neighbor deliberately causes the problem by altering the fence? That’s almost like saying I can take his cat to the pound when she comes over to beat up my cat. Perhaps legal, but not the right thing to do. Or toss weed seeds onto his perfectly manicured lawn, just because I can do it? In a neighborhood where people are civil to each other, it’s odd to find alley-fighting mentality. But I guess that’s how some people think. Poor them!

Meditation works for me. It’s his fence. He can enjoy it. Meanwhile I’ll supervise my dog and bolster his fence with lovely plywood sections.

What do you do if a neighbor alters the boundary fence between your yard and his–his fence, on his property–which then allows your pet to sneak through the low, unraveled material, into his yard–then sends a strange letter saying that he has no responsibility to mend the fence and will send your dog to the pound if it sneaks into his yard. Note: there is a pot-bellied pig and barking dog behind a cyclone fence at the neighbors on the other side of his yard. The pig just may be interesting to my dog.

Next, in the letter he says that I need to build an entirely new fence in my yard, instead of his connecting the two existing sections of his own fence. The boundary fence has always been on his property, built by the previous owners of his house before a big remodel.

I understand, as a pet owner I’m responsible to keep my dog in my yard, but a significant section of the actual 6′ wood fence is missing, plugged by a low section of aged large-mesh green metal wire, you know, the kind you’d see for temporary barrier use at a hardware store. He’s completely aware of the incongruity, even mentioned that it’s sad if my dog is getting cut by the loose metal in his fence.

He’s twice admitted he needs to build the fence himself, but has reneged. Over time, it seems he is someone who requires conflict in order to feel that he has “safe boundaries” or a sense of control.

What would you do, or what advice would you give, if you were me? Thanks.

    1. When you’re not at home, keep your blinds or drapes open.

Ask yourself what does a burglar like more than an unlocked door or window?

To operate without being seen, of course.

So when you leave your house, keep the blinds open so passers by or your neighbors can see what’s going on inside.

The excuse for keeping blinds closed, “I don’t want the burglars to be able to see my valuables” makes no sense. Most burglars don’t spend much time casing certain houses for particular things to steal. They bank on the fact that most of us have computers, electronics, jewelry and cash inside. They look in your windows to see if you’re home, not to take inventory of what’s inside.

This goes for businesses too. Keep your blinds open when you’re closed.

    2. Keep your porch/exterior lights on all night long.

Again, a burglar or car prowler doesn’t want to be seen, they want to operate under cover of darkness.

I’m always amazed to see my neighbors turn their porch lights off when they go to bed. When the police or your neighbors go past your house at 2 or 3 AM you want them to be able to see your house, not just darkness.

And if your address is posted on your house, keeping a porch light on allows emergency responders to see your address when you call them.

I had a similar experience as AIM. All the pet insurance companies I looked into had so much fine print and things that weren’t covered, that if you’re disciplined enough, you’re probably better off just setting up a special savings account and putting away $20 per month or whatever the monthly premium would be.

Also, if you ever find yourself in an emergency situation where the care is more than you can currently afford, I would highly recommend looking into Care Credit. It’s an interest-free line of credit that can only be used for medical expenses, which thankfully includes veterinary. Also, a lot of vets offices are often willing to work out payment plans, as well.

Kudos to you for thinking ahead to make sure your furry family members are well taken care of!

    HMCRich..

the problem with writing the ugly faces of the tea bagger party off as a disgruntled minority is that this disgruntled minority is not only hogging the lion’s share of the limelight but driving current Republican political strategy.

Last night i watched a nightline special on the Obama presidency… and even after the fact.. after the passage of the health care bill.. the tea bagger movement got a ton of attention and the progressive movement to include the public option got none… not even a mention… and Frontline is considered a fairly liberal program.

I was part of that progressive movement who sent more faxes and emails and petitions and calls to our elected officials demanding a public option than they had ever received in such a short period with little more than a mention on network news.

We were persistent.. we were numerous.. we had momentum. So why were we not noticed.. even by our own party… while a bunch of racist bigoted morons carrying signs and dripping spittle in fury get all the attention?

This disgruntled minority is driving Republican policy right now… they have empowered the far right of the Republican party to put pressure on all Republicans for complete non-cooperation with the democratic process.

They are gambling that they can win that mid-term election and take the process back now that the financial crisis is no longer the republican hot potato it once was… and to that end they did their best to shut down the government entirely to make the president look bad.

And you wonder what the truth is?

I will tell you this… i was so ticked at my party for their complete cave to the center.. so ticked that we are likely to replace a left leaning supreme court judge with a centrist that will tip the court even further to the right.. so ticked that my party didn’t bother to even acknowledge the liberal side of it’s constituency… that i was going to opt out of the political process at mid-term.. take my cash.. my voice and my vote and go home.. until i watched that Nightline program last night.

The current administration that you paint as one step shy of socialism has failed it’s base by governing for political effect… by being about as far from liberal as it can get… and yet… they are a huge improvement over the alternative.. the face of the tea bagger spewing spittle in rage.

You had best be careful what you ask for because we may not be enough to stop you from getting your way… and you too will have to live with the tea bagger mentality.. that bully mentality that says that anything you can take is yours by right… and that might makes right.

That face of rage is driving your party and they are going to be pretty difficult to put back in the box Fox news took them out of.

You had better hope that a lot more democrats just like me get really ticked off at the idea of another republican majority…

because right now they are little more than boys behaving badly… political bullies grabbing more than their fair of the American Pie… and right now we are all that stands between you and them.

The only pockets left in America to raid are those of the middle class that has not yet gone under in the last financial crisis.

if you win.. you might as well grab your ankles and assume the position.

Waterworld. Thanks for posting. I have been away for a bit. I generally do not trust or like the Patriot Act. I agree with you on the dilution of our rights by our lawmakers.

Metrognome. I composed an email to Paul Ryan but couldn’t send it due to the fact they only want emails from their district. I will call one of these days to ask about the numbers. I also wish to answer you last query from a “rational conservative” view. But I cannot at the moment. I am currently irrational. Danger Will Robinson.

    Thanks for the links.

Oh Charla, you are fun. I wonder if someone like James Carville decided to start hammering the liberal movement and was a senior fellow at a left leaning think tank would he be retained or let go? Honestly, I don’t really care. Kantor’s team did lose the past few elections, but at midterms when a presidents approval rating is under 50% (Obama is now down to 45%) usually the Prez’s party loses on average 41 seats in the house. If history runs true, the Right would gain back the majority in the house. If many 3rd party candidates run strong, that will probably favor the Democrats. We shall see.

Regarding the original post. AP was looking into it and here is what they wrote.

I get the feeling that both sides need to chill. I wish there was definitive proof either way. Both sides scream and yell so much these days. It gets old. I usually just want people to respect others even if they disagree.

PS, it has come to my attention that the congress might have to live under the healthcare legislation they passed. If they change it for themselves, they would seem to be hypocrites. It will certainly show their true colors even more if this tidbit is true.

    Good Night.

Amenities? If the above-ground components of the sewer overflow system were amenities, you’d be more interested in having the project at Lowman Beach. You can call the facilities many things, but not amenities.

I think I’ll bow out of this discussion now and take my concerns to the County.

As noted in many of my posts, I don’t know what sites might be available overall. All I know is that small, complex tank systems built under streets might be possible, but, you need a street in which it is possible. The suggested streets so far have been a very small tank under Murray and a medium tank (the biggest one they can put in Beach Drive at this end is still only a medium tank).

So, would people tolerate a tank under Fauntleroy? Don’t think so. The only other site available is Lincoln Park. The mid-park parking lot alone is twice as large as Lowman Beach Park. How about under the Parking Lot?

The issue JoB brings up about the north end of the park is likely viable. The density of trees and shrubbery would likely dampen much of the noise during construction and a different path could be made for direct access to the work site that would be distant from most homes. Similarly, after construction, the density of shrubbery and trees would hide any above ground amenities almost completely. The above ground amenities are very small for such a large park, but very large for a small park. Smaller than 1/8 of the Parks Dept’s current facility in the park.

None of these facilities should be in parks, but, we don’t have too many other options, unless you want your neighbor’s property bought up by the county.

I am as attached to Lincoln Park as anyone, but the fact is, it is large, and it won’t be compromised hardly at all.

Believe me, I have no “zeal” about any park option, but logic is logic. Sacrifice my neighbors or sacrifice a small portion of a very large park.

    Kudos to Alki Lumber!!!

I was looking for wood for my smoker and unable to find anything other than the shredded wood ships available at Home Depot/QFC I called Alki Lumber to see if they had anything. Low an behold, they had logs of Apple Wood sitting in crates in one of their yards. We gave the guy $9.00 and told him to tell us when to stop. We stopped ourselves after 5 or 6 good sized logs as that is essentially a year supply.

Kudos to a local merchant that has what I need and at an EXTREMELY reasonable price.

If anyone needs some seasoned Apple Wood for their summer barbecues I recommend visiting Alki Lumber!

I have a 4 year old Min-Pin and recently adopted an adorable 4 month old mutt that may get to 30 lbs. Moxie (the minpin) hasn’t had any health issues. Gusto, the new addition, is currently in good health, but we have no real information on his history. In the past, I’ve considered getting pet insurance knowing that a series of vet trips or a significant accident could put us in a financial pickle. Now that there’s two pups counting on us for care, we’re motivated to select a provider.

Does anyone have recommendations for pet insurance? Thank you for helping us out!

Our mom has lived at Merrill Gardens – Admiral for almost 2 years now and we have been very pleased. They have a higher level of care there than most assisted living homes do – and she does need that. This has enabled her to live ‘somewhat independently” in her own apartment longer than she would be able to at other homes in the area -which means that we do not have to move her again when her health declines further.

We have not seen a great deal of turnover in the staff. There is a RN there that oversees the medication of the residents and I have found her to be very helpful if I have any questions or concerns. They also have a conceirge service that I have found useful. This service will be your ‘taxi, personal shopper, “daugher substitue when you cannot be there” person.

I have dropped in at various times and have never found anything to alarm me. It is alway clean and secure.

They do a good job of providing activities for the residents which involves getting them out of the building to various community events, as well as bringing community in to the building. They usually have one or two special meals a month that family is invited to and the chef does a darn good job with the menu. The maintence staff is wonderful to our mom – they will hang pictures, Christmas swags as well as prompt maintence of any problems. Everyone there tries to make it pleasant and watches out for the residents.

More to the point – here are her comments: “They treat us very well here and are very kind.” “They really try to please us.” “They keep this place very clean.”

It has been a good choice for us and I would recommend it to others. Good luck in your search. Having done this I know it is not easy.

as you age.. your ability to maintain physical activity wanes. Those who are able to remain active will remain active longer..

but age will eventually affect even those who are active. Add an illness or accident or injury into the mix and age related slowdown will hit a lot earlier. Add chronic illness into the mix and it hits even earlier. Age does matter.

I am sorry to have to be the one to inform you of the obvious… but those are basic facts of life.. and won’t change much whether you face them or not.

If you think it doesn’t matter.. you really should look at the info on pedestrian mortality in West Seattle. Those with impaired mobility are killed at a disproportionate rate by careless drivers…

    villagegreen…

so we should raise the speed limit on all hills because everyone just naturally wants to drive faster?

probably not. There are a lot of good reasons to slow down on hills.

The problem is that people mistake that road for a restricted access freeway entrance and nothing could be further from the truth.

There are at least 5 feeder intersections into residential neighborhoods on the lower section of Admiral Way (below the bend) … and another 4 – 6 on the upper section (above the bend and on the east side of the overpass bridge).

and one crosswalk on the entire stretch.

it’s no wonder those who view Admiral Way as a neighborhood differ with those who consider Admiral Way a freeway entrance in their perceptions of acceptable speed limits.

In fact, there is one pedestrian crosswalk between the bottom of Admiral Way (and a bus stop) and 42nd street..

Would that be acceptable for your neighborhood?

the speed limit isn’t the problem.

    tickets aren’t the problem.

Drivers who mistake driving for a competitive sport are the problem.

If the SPD issues enough speeding tickets… drivers will slow down….

    hooper1961…

i shouldn’t have to point this out to you since you are a certified engineer and thus must have at least a passing acquaintance with statistics…

but comparing like amounts of time to achieve comparable longitudinal averages is simply basic statistics.

you don’t get to arbitrarily take a year out of the stats or compare unequal amounts of time to make your point.

In statistical analysis that is considered manipulation of data and requires more than a few footnotes. That’s not a personal insult but a statement of the basics of statistics.

However, that post did bring up an interesting observation.

When you arbitrarily discounted the year with low traffic accident stats after the speed was lowered.. you stated that higher gas prices were THE cause for lowered traffic accidents in one of the years after the speed reduction… i assume because of reduce traffic volume…

Again, statistically speaking…you would have to have more data to support that assertion….

but let’s assume it is supported… that if we went back in time to the last time gas prices were higher than average we would see a similar reduction in accident rates…

If that is true.. wouldn’t the obvious alternate solution to traffic safety be raising the tax on gas?

After all.. if those numbers hold true.. the accident rate was cut in half when people had to pay more for their gas.

Personally.. i would love to see higher gas prices…

there would be fewer emissions because people would drive less..

more people would ride the bus…

increased demand for public transportation would necessitate investment in a better system…

which would make public transportation easier to use…

    Everyone would walk more…

    Obesity would fall…

high blood pressure, heart disease and type II diabetes rates would fall…

    we would all live longer.

social pressure for civility would increase as pedestrian density increased…

that all sounds pretty good to me…

Would you join me advocating for a substantial gas tax hike to increase public safety and fund public transportation?

It sure makes sense to me.

I have to admit, the last time I drove anywhere CLOSE to 35 on Admiral was when I was following two cars driving next to each other at the same speed, and I was cursing.

Just have to time it right to avoid tickets.

KBear and you would follow the leader over a cliff? The issue is that the 30 MPH limit is not reasonable and is inconsistent with Technical Standards. Not one SDOT person has refuted my Technical Analysis that clearly documented that the 35 MPH limit was appropriate. And in fact other nationally respected criteria result in recommended limit of 45 MPH (that I would not support in this situation)!

I have not manipulated anything. The fact is the corridor incurs more accidents with a 30 MPH limit than it did with a 35 MPH limit. The City had zero Technical Data to support the change that was arbitrary and capricious. I am open to peer review but SDOT is not. WHY I ASK?

The 2008 data is effected by $4+{ gas prices that reduced travel significantly, thus lower accidents.

I do not appreciate personal attacks, the Technical Data shows that the prior 35 MPH limit was safe, efficient and reasonable. Thus there was zero justification for the change. And not one SDOT person has refuted my Technical Traffic Report conducted.
