I brought my cat to West Seattle Animal Hospital last year to be put to sleep because she was old (16 years) and sick but was told that I had to wait at least 5 hours to have my cat have a complete physical and then have them determine if she could be put to sleep. Really? I was not putting my beloved pet to sleep because I didn’t want her anymore. She was old and ill and in pain and my decision did not come easily. I then went to Pet Care Center (where they were not cute) and they were very kind to me. I couldn’t believe that West Seattle Animal Hospital would expect me to have a complete physical for my cat when I’m standing there with my old, sick cat in a cat carrier and I’m crying.

Anyway, that is my experience. I will not go back.

Columbia City Bakery is starting a six week CSA which begins next month. The minimum cost is $100 for the six weeks. Menu items include loaves, rolls, buns, teacakes, cookies, bars, granola and many holiday offerings.

I would like to participate but they need at least five customers in West Seattle to have a pick-up site on our side of the bridge.

For those who call left-wing talk-radio an “echo chamber,” (As though you’ll here a different message on any of the shows on any of Seattle’s, what, 4-5 conservative talk stations? 1) President Obama tripled the deficit.

Reality: Bush’s last budget had a $1.416 trillion deficit. Obama’s first reduced that to $1.29 trillion.

2) President Obama raised taxes, which hurt the economy.

Reality: Obama cut taxes. 40% of the “stimulus” was wasted on tax cuts which only create debt, which is why it was so much less effective than it could have been.

3) President Obama bailed out the banks.

Reality: While many people conflate the “stimulus” with the bank bailouts, the bank bailouts were requested by President Bush and his Treasury Secretary, former Goldman Sachs CEO Henry Paulson. (Paulson also wanted the bailouts to be “non-reviewable by any court or any agency.”) The bailouts passed and began before the 2008 election of President Obama.

4) The stimulus didn’t work.

Reality: The stimulus worked, but was not enough. In fact, according to the Congressional Budget Office, the stimulus raised employment by between 1.4 million and 3.3 million jobs.

5) Businesses will hire if they get tax cuts.

Reality: A business hires the right number of employees to meet demand. Having extra cash does not cause a business to hire, but a business that has a demand for what it does will find the money to hire. Businesses want customers, not tax cuts.

6) Health care reform costs $1 trillion.

Reality: The health care reform reduces government deficits by $138 billion.

7) Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, is “going broke,” people live longer, fewer workers per retiree, etc.

Reality: Social Security has run a surplus since it began, has a trust fund in the trillions, is completely sound for at least 25 more years and cannot legally borrow so cannot contribute to the deficit (compare that to the military budget!) Life expectancy is only longer because fewer babies die; people who reach 65 live about the same number of years as they used to.

8) Government spending takes money out of the economy.

Reality: Government is We, the People and the money it spends is on We, the People. Many people do not know that it is government that builds the roads, airports, ports, courts, schools and other things that are the soil in which business thrives. Many people think that all government spending is on “welfare” and “foreign aid” when that is only a small part of the government’s budget.

Should have mentioned this sooner. I know the Forum regulars include many animal advocates and pet fans. Had seen this on the South Park neighborhood info mailing list but it was also called specifically to WSB’s attention by Bill from Seattle Canine Outfitters in SP. Happening now. Caveat that I am not sure exactly where the park is going – I think it’s around the bridge. Searching back through the mailing list to try to find that info.

Discuss park rules/hours etc…

Discuss future improvements garner public comment as to how we (the community of SP) might best make use of the park.

Saturday afternoon around 3pm would like to see an all the dogs in the the neighborhood turn out for a Dog Parade.

Especially putting a call out to all pack dogs -those dogs that have their own backpacks – to show them off with pride<grin>

Smitty: The stock market CRASHES from time to time and anyone who thinks putting a dime of Social Security into such a system should look after that hole in the head. The whole point of SS is to care for people when stuff hits the fan. Social Security was created out of the Great Depression. To think we could take the little cash it provides in order to invest and then watch it evaporate is way beyond crazy which is why even Bush, who did push through a whole lotta crap, was not able to make this one smell sweet.

waterworld: As you probably know, there might already be enough “evidence” in the dossiers of the Gitmo suspects to convict. However, since this evidence was obtained through torture, it’s not admissable in court. Moreover, it would be an embarrassment to the government to have to admit, once again, that they tortured people.

So that’s how you get this situation where the govt. can say: “We know these guys are guilty, but we can’t prove it, so we’re just going to hang onto them.”

How effed-up is that?

I think Obama’s basically a good guy — less than 10% evil — but his experience with Guantanamo Bay, illegal wiretapping, etc., illustrates why we should ALL have fought harder against the Bush program to undermine the Constitution. Once we let a president expand the power of the Office at our expense, it’s very, very difficult to roll that back, as we’re seeing now, in so many ways.

Just look at the way Congress has abandoned its oversight duties on war, for example. After nine years of this madness in Iraq and Afghanistan, Congress has yet to put a stop to it. Why?

This is ironic. I never liked Juan Williams a) because his voice grates on my nerves and b) because he seemed to act as NPR’s interpreter of all issues related to race. So it bowled me over to learn that NPR let him go for being too reactionary. I still don’t care for the guy, but I also think NPR blew it by being overly sensitive. They should have replaced him long ago, but not for this. Unfortunately Fox gets to gloat and accuse NPR of liberal political correctness while they pick up another token black voice to give them a pretense of diversity.

I agree about the ridiculous wait times at Westside Dermatology to see a physician.

I always arrive at least 10 minutes early and the closest to my appointment time I’ve ever been seen in the past 2 years is 30 minutes.

It really sucks because it was never that way when Dr. Kulin owned the practice, I think now they’ve expanded and are forced to over schedule.

OK, I was so impressed with Dr. Meredith that I took my dog back to him for a dental cleaning. I’d gotten an estimate a year ago with a range of $750-1100. Dr. Meredith cut that estimate almost in half, and with my 40% off dental coupon my total bill came to well under $200 – even lower than the revised low estimate. He even trimmed my dog’s nails. But the greatest thing is Dr. Meredith’s demeanor. He is so sweet and reassuring, but competent as well. You can tell he loves what he does. I must figure out a way to say thanks. Highly, highly recommend this veterinarian.

I wanted to give a heads up to all of the West Seattlites that recently got new B of A credit cards (in regards to an earlier thread).

When my account transitioned to the new card, B of A failed to tell me it would turn off my automatic balance payments (auto-pay of the CC balance from my checking account). As a result, my auto-payment wasn’t made and I got charged a late fee and interest charges. After talking to 5 different B of A customer service employees, they STILL wouldn’t return my interest charges until after my payment clears (and even then I’ll have to call back.)

If any of you with new cards had auto-payments set up, make sure you reset them up with your new card to avoid the hassle that I just went through.

While all of you are congratulating yourselves on being so correct for villifying NPR, you might want to pause long enough to consider what it means to be a “news analyst”. The requirements are somewhat intellectual but it is also a dispassionate role. If Juan is so removed from current issues that seeing a Muslim board a plane makes him nervous, he is not well-suited for job. Muslims make up the 3rd largest religion and anyone working for NPR might want to get acquainted with a few of them before spouting out uninformed prejudices on that right-wing mouthpiece called fox news.

I was also under the impression that you had to have a special license in order to keep a raccoon – or other “wild” animal, as a pet.

Unless the raccoons are in an attic or someplace where harm is being done, they’re better left alone. Nature always fills a vacuum; if you get rid of one batch, another will soon take their place.

The best thing to happen to President Obama for 2012 will be the “Pure Evil” (alinsky point) Republicans gaining power in the House and maybe the Senate.

Redblack, I never ever said the Federal Government should not spend our money. I just want them to be responsible in spending the top wage earners money (wink) and the rest of us peons hard earned cash. I think for quite a few issues, local makes more sense than national. Not always but I would prefer fighting or cajoling a politican in Seattle or Olympia instead of Washington.

Clarify for me please. Does not a VAT, tax each level of say a bullet train from raw materials through completion? I have heard a VAT hurts lower and middle class people.

I just do not agree with most of the progressive agenda, but I am glad for the highways we drive, certain consumer protections, our military and the average citizens who give way too much of themselves for our rights.

It takes all of us to keep this nation one of the best countries of opportunity. We can all contribute and I am fine giving a certain amount of my hard earned tax dollars to the city, county, state and federal government. All I am asking is that they be wise stewards with our tax dollars.

But the government cannot be our nanny or mommy. The government needs capital for all these agencies and programs. That is why every effort should be made to encourage business and encourage people to invest in us. We also need protections from scoundrels too. I am all for certain agencies policing our commerce and people within reason.

Our constitution and bill of rights were created to limit government. I don’t see that anymore. Who will spend less in DC? Rossi. And if he doesn’t he will need to get booted too.
