vincentMemberJenV you are the queen of Anecdotal evidence
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anecdotal_evidence#Anecdotal_evidence_and_faulty_logic
Sorted by Marketed speed:
50 Mbps/20 Mbps – FIOS
16 Mbps/2 Mbps – comcast
7 Mbps/896kps – dsl (various)
2.0Mbps/256KB – clearwire
600 Kbps/ 500Kbps – EVDO (sprint verizon att “aircard”)
As with everything your mileage my vary (YMMV)
Because of an inane rule about the definition of carrier monopolies in seattle verizon basically has listed FIOS fiber as being available sometime after hell freezes over.
Comcast is shared infrastructure based on neighborhood nodes, which causes wild fluxuations in service and has recently been sued for throttling, and has recently introduced a 250g monthly cap for download ( 30hours of netflix streaming )
DSL offers the best upload, all the way to megs per second but its has physical limitations based on footage from the office, and its still relatively expensive for old tech.
Clearwire is hugely limited by nodes much like comcast, but its also limited by wireless line of sight. They have been accused of overselling service without supplying appropriate infrastructure.
EVDO and other aircards are a nice incremental step in wireless abilities of individual laptops but they are hardly a whole house connectivity solution.
unless you really understand the differences in the technology its really best to ask your neighbors or try more than one service before you settle in on a multi month, or year contract. Also avoid paying needless fees on equipment rental by using google to purchase these items outright, breaking even usually takes a couple of months at best.

CMPParticipantI happened to eat dinner at the Rocksport the night of the presidential debate and they had it going on the big screen with the volume up. I think more people wanted to watch sports, but they kept it on which was pretty cool, even after taking a poll of who was paying attention. Worth calling to see if they’ll show it.

ellenaterMemberI know JenV! I am going to Tivo it because my friend can’t watch it until later that evening. I thought about moving it to Wed. but thought that would be too confusing considering we just moved it to Thursdays. But if nobody’s coming… I’ll be there though, I may be knitting alone, lol …

WSBKeymasterDo you do a lot of video uploading? Seriously, that’s the biggie for us. May not be an issue for JoB, whose thread of course this is, but I’m really interested in anyone who has experience with that … According to the Clearwire website, upload speed is 256KB … According to the Comcast website: 384k upload with faster bursts via “powerboost” … Download speed is stated as 2MB on Clearwire and 6MB on Comcast. Not so much an issue for me as the upload, sending clips to Blip or wherever after processing them.

AlParticipantSo far so good on the eastbound Spokane Street closure. Anyone had any problems so far? I’ve encountered heavier traffic than prior to the closure (both N and S bound on Marginal), but not many problems. It is trickier to cross Marginal around Hanford, so I’ve been paying close attention to traffic before I cross Marginal to get to the bike lane in the mornings.
Now this is upcoming soon, the start of work on the overpass in November at Atlantic/1st/Marginal: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/transportation/381088_stadiumhwy30.html
“Improvements to the Atlantic-First intersection include addition of a turning lane on First and improvements to the surfaces of both streets. That work is to be finished by April 1. Two new bridges — one from I-90 to Atlantic as well as above Brougham — are to be completed by the spring of 2010, with the entire project to be open to traffic by early June of that year.
The work will mean restrictions on vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian movements around the stadiums.
State project manager David Sowers said there will be construction work on the new bridges above Brougham between Third and Occidental Avenues, where some people now walk. Sidewalks on Brougham may be narrowed at times because of the work; some construction will be halted near Safeco Field on the afternoons of game days and construction will be kept out of some road lanes during rush hour.”

villagegreenMemberSo, TheHouse, glad you’re back in the mix. I ask this question in all seriousness (I’m not trying to be snarky). Do you believe Sarah Palin was a good VP choice, and if so, why? Also, would you feel comfortable having her run this country as president?
I just find it ironic that Republicans usually favor a meritocracy and have a very hard time with any type of affirmative action. Picking Palin seems to go directly against these ideals.
September 30, 2008 at 4:16 pm #588219Topic: Looking for evening work/job
in forum WSB Reader RecommendationsgavmitMemberThis is my first time posting so sorry if I am doing it wrong.
I am a stay at home dad with preschool age twins (they go to preschool part time) so I don’t have much time that I could work during the day – I am looking for an evening job that I can work M-Thurs 5/6 pm until 11pm. I have been and am currently employed with Key Arena, Safeco Field and Qwest Field but that is not consistent and now that the Sonics are gone…I prefer to be in West Seattle.
If you know of anything please let me know. Thanks.

CaitParticipantI admire how republicans are making lemonade out of this situation, but I think if we all really truly think about what’s probably going to happen it’s not looking good for Palin. They’re already trying to get him to go easy on her. Bad. Sign.
House, I think Palin has shown what she’s capable of “off of her leash” so to speak – rubbish. Nothing that’s going to stand up in a debate anyway. Her quips and pre-written jabs are only going to get her so far – it worked at the convention because people weren’t looking for substance they were looking for fireworks. At the debates the American people look for substance and I don’t see her delivering. I have no indication that she is going to be able to stand up to Biden who is experienced, charismatic and somewhat mouthy himself from what I hear.
If she’s making cracks about his age, I would hope that she’s doing so in a tongue-in-cheek fashion. I think she’s a bit wonky in the head, but not completely oblivious.
Any reports on Alaska weather today? Just want to make sure they can see those Russians at a safe distance… :)

JenVMembercan’t make it Thursday – I will be watching Sarah Palin read answers to pre-screened questions off a teleprompter and Joe Biden biting his tongue.
Maybe next time.

AnonymousInactiveDoesn’t solve your problem, but I’ve found using the huge, over the ear wireless headphones with music or a book on cd helps me over-ride those noises and fall asleep. I even have a pair of the construction type safety earmuffs. $18 at homedepot. Yes, you look ridiculous, but it’s a lot worse to go without sleep.
September 30, 2008 at 1:00 pm #640885In reply to: $700B bailout?
MagpieParticipantThere is a lot of oversimplification going on about this crisis and just how far it will ultimately affect the American people (and the world financial markets). This time, trickle down economics will trickle down all the way to small businesses in a way that we haven’t seen in any of our lifetimes. Small businesses could fail at record rates. Small businesses are the backbone of America. I don’t believe that we have seen any where near the worst of this. I have the opportunity to go out to lunch a couple of times a month and I have noticed that restaurants that used to be full are not even half full. Conventions are not covering their minimums in Seattle because business travel is down. Airlines are cutting back, retailers are cutting back (it starts with cutting back from 40-32 hours..these people haven’t hit the unemployment numbers because their hours have just been cut..) Banks make it hard to get a loan. Construction jobs are artificially high on projects that are completing (but who will buy the condos, etc being built or can even get a loan?). All of this reduces state tax revenues tremendously at a time where more people need assistance. I could go on and on with doom and gloom. Even the casinos in Vegas are taking a hit and they thought they were inflation proof.
No matter what we are told by the media or by politicians, they might as well be blindfolded and throwing a darts. All of what we are being told is theoretical and no one knows what is going to happen. This situation is completely unprecidented. No matter if you live within your means or not, there are so many things that you won’t have any control over in this economy. Unfortunatley, what we saw yesterday from Congress was a complete lack of leadership. All these guys care about is being re elected and I can assure you that being on a banking committee in Congress doesn’t make you an expert.
September 30, 2008 at 9:50 am #641461In reply to: Train orchestra?!?
mellaw6565MemberA long shot – but could it possibly have anytning to do with diverted traffic from the Spokane St construction? I know there are train tracks near there, but not sure how it would affect tracks closer to W. Seattle. I’m in Highland Park and we hear them too at times lately.
September 30, 2008 at 7:15 am #641459In reply to: Train orchestra?!?
JanSParticipantwell, it’s just about 12:15am , I’m in the Admiral District right by Safeway…and I can hear the trains loud and clear. While they’re just background noise to me, I can imagine how annoying they are for those who live closer, like on Pigeon Hill, farther down Admiral, on Avalon. They’ve been going for about 10 minutes straight now…

mellaw6565MemberHouse – for the first time I agree with one of your posts – although I still trace the origins back farther to Reagonomics and the massive mergers/LBO’s that wreaked havoc then.
But if we’re going to bail anyone out – it’s still cheaper to help those that were victims of unscrupulous business practices.
I don’t believe, as Tonya does, that hell be damned with people who are now overextended and too bad if they lose their homes, etc……There are so many aspects to this problem that we can’t afford to let banks or individuals down. There’s a better middle road.
But as I stated on the other thread – I think the Bush administration is jacking up the seriousness of this crisis to squeeze every last drop they can to shore up their cronies before they leave office. Congress is finally waking up to this I think and hopefully taking a more measured look at what’s truly needed immediately.
Many economists agree that right now, if you have the money, is a good time to invest. Unfortunately, I have to fill my gas tank and pay my mortgage first.
September 30, 2008 at 4:58 am #640883In reply to: $700B bailout?
JanSParticipantoh, geez…it’s always the Dems fault…like the Repubs are perfect…ain’t so no matter what Tonya said, dear Mr. House…a lot of this happened when the Repubs were in control of congress. Yeah…let’s deregulate, get gov’t. out of it…free market…let’s see where it’ll go…and look where it got us…Dems are NOT responsible for all the ills in this country…get over it…and that’s just my opinion. There is , in my opinion, no one group in power responsible for this…but believe what you want..’tis a free world (well, not exactly). A little bit of greed fueled this , too. I say don’t reward this with big payoffs to the higher-ups..fire their ass, and have them go flip burgers for minimum wage, let them get a taste of what it’s like to really be screwed.
I do agree, I don’t believe that we’re headed for a depression, and I think that things will adjust themselves downward, and we’ll get back to a more productive economy (at least I hope so)…and I even said to a client this afternoon that if you have money to invest…do it. Don’t they always say to buy low? things are pretty low – lol…
Oh, yeah…and..if the milk prices go up..there’s always mother’s milk ;-)

flipjackParticipantThank God they voted that bullsh*t bailout down. I cannot believe the number of idiot democrats who voted FOR it!!! What idiots! Including Jim McDermott.
I’ll tell ya, it ain’t all Bushes fault for sure…It’s the spineless dumba** democrats who have lost any common sense who have let this administration run amok even after gaining a majority. Here is the tally for those interested:

TammiWSMemberDrown government – and then they beg for a $700B bail out bucket!
I’m angry and glad this wasnt passed. Maybe some of these banks need to fail, people need to go bankrupt and we simply get back to basics such as ‘Dont buy it if you cant afford it’, ‘Dont give loans to people who have bad credit’, ‘Dont live beyond your means’…. There’s plenty of blame to go around from the top of govt. to the everyday Joe….That is the market correcting itself, not a bailout.
We, and THEY, all knew none of this was sustainable – just like the dot.com world wasnt sustainable. Google stock priced at over $700??? C’mon…..

September 29, 2008 at 7:22 pm #640858In reply to: bicycle lane restriction on Alki trail
jasperMemberI still don’t understand why so long… The entire Timberline lodge was also constructed in a two year span, albeit by more people I am sure but do you or the managers of this project understand how dangerous it is for bicycles to enter into traffic, northbound ones crossing the street against traffic, in order to continue bicycling through that area?
I don’t know what role you play in this but if you know why it is taking so long I am curious, especially each time I launch myself back into ongoing traffic on my bicycle. Getting off my bicycle and walking is also a major inconvenience; I can totally do it, that’s not the question, my question only is why so long? Are the parts difficult to procure? The design of the project incredibly complicated? Is there inpenatrable rock to dig through?…
Thank you.
