It is public property, not your property. If there was a mountain blocking your view would you advocate blowing up the mountain? If those trees are big enough to block your view then I am guessing they didn’t just spring up overnight, but over a course of many, many years. Also, in regards to your comment “there is no purpose for these trees”, aside from the benefits of producing oxygen and helping to clean the air, they also aid in preventing soil erosion which benefits everyone who lives or drives near the green belt. I probably wouldn’t lead with the “no purpose” comment when you talk to the city arborist.

We are new to West Seattle (and to WA), and need a sitter for our 4.5 year old son for ~ 2 evenings per month, and starting in mid-July, for two to three afternoons per week.

You must live in West Seattle, and be able to pick our son up from the Cottage School. You must have child care experience, references and lots of energy.

He is a funny, smart, and high-energy kid. He loves to go to playgrounds, play trains, be read to, and to play in our yard. We are looking for a long-term sitter who can provide care through this summer, and the next school year.

    Please email me at aolins@msn.com.

For some with PTSD, helicopter noise IS the end of the world.

    https://www.ptsdforum.org/c/threads/helicopters-overhead-anxiety-rising-rant.25282/

Personally I grew up with flocks of helicopters training for air cavalry and VN tactics several time a day flying so low the pilots waved back at us kids on the school playground so by highschool I did not hear helicopter noise until I noticed others looking up.

The city does not have enough decibel meters to properly enforce the anti noise ordinances on the books. Something MUST be done to curb the TV news disregard for its noise pollution.

I may be biased though. I hold tv news in the same regard I do a fresh dog turd in my shoe.

Hi luckymom, I couldn’t find a current/recent needs list on the Nickelsville Works FB Page, but I’d suggest calling the NV Security Desk, 206-450-5268, and see if they have a list that they could read off to you, or have you talk to a Donation Co-Ordinator.

Otherwise, historically the ongoing needs have been:

Tents; I’d call down for specific sizes, in case the size limits have changed, but in general, One person, couples, and family tents.

    Batteries: AA AAA C D 9-volt.

    Tarps.

    Hygiene supplies.

    Bus tickets.

Pet Supplies; call and ask for a Pet Co-Ordinator for specifics on food, but historically ongoing needs have been leashes, harnesses, toys.

    Canned meats, fruits, veggies.

    Top Ramen, Cup-o-Noodles, etc.

That’s about all that comes to mind right now.

    Thanks for thinking of them!

Posting to see if there’s even any interest out there. I moved into a new townhome in High Point last year that came with a brand new apartment sized (24″ wide) stacked washer/dryer (linked below). It’s the top loading style washer where the lid hooks onto the dryer above. I measured my closet and got a bonus this spring and decided I could upgrade to a full sized front loading set. Nothing wrong with the current set other than it’s a small capacity and I would prefer standard capacity machines. That said, if you’re in an older home, apartment or condo with a limited laundry space and require a 24″ set, this is a perfect unit and it does have some energy saving features such as auto load size detection for water level and auto-dry. All electric, needs 1 220v outlet.

I wasn’t really sure if there might be interest in this kind of machine used, I haven’t seen many on Craigslist. Home Depot sells it for around $1200 and I keep thinking there must be someone around here that might be interested in making a deal. It would be a shame to just have it hauled away for the upgraded set. A friend suggested if there wasn’t any interest I could probably donate it to the Salvation Army, not sure if they take anything like this though.

I don’t have any way of transporting it so if anyone happens to be interested they would have to haul it on their own.

    Details on the HD website:

kayo, diagnostics are fairly easy for verticillium. Details are easily found online, but try this: remove a dead branch, and slice down through the stem. If there are brown streaks running through it, it’s probably verticillium. There’s really no treatment except for good hygiene- which is probably more preventive than remedial. You can try pruning out all the dead stuff, and see what you’re left with. Sometimes that makes a world of difference, at least visually. Good luck.

Hi Sheila; what part of West Seattle do you live? (some parts of WS are as far apart as from WS to downtown); are you within walking distance to parks, playgrounds, amenities? do you provide vehicle for nanny to drive your baby on outings? Thanks, Diane

My bad JimmyG, I looked it up and you are correct. Thanks, you learned me something! It is legal to cross a double yellow but ONLY “if it can be done safely and without stopping traffic”… So it was a legal move by the woman turning left across that double yellow crossing three lanes of oncoming traffic that day she slammed into the side of my son’s car nearly killing him. Legal or not, my biggest point here is that people should not enable other drivers to do things that put others at risk.

We will be in Seattle for the summer, roughly June 3 – August 12, and we are looking for a part-time nanny. Our boys are 1 & 4. The days and hours are somewhat flexible, but we are hoping for about 24-32 hours/week total. Ideally it would be 3-4 days/week (weekdays), sometime between the hours of 8 a.m. -6 p.m. We would consider a nanny-share situation for some of the hours if it works out logistically.

Applicants should be organized and responsible, and have First Aid/CPR training. We would like our nanny to have experience caring for toddlers as well as preschoolers, and be comfortable juggling two children at the same time. Being able to drive the kids to various activities and summer camps (in your vehicle) is a requirement. Outings to playgrounds, beaches, the zoo, children’s museum, etc, are encouraged.

We live in the Admiral area of West Seattle. Please contact me for more information: skovalchick@comcast.net. Thank you!

Jiggs, you are very close to my personal tastes in your second list. Very close. And I will add some to that later.

But don’t get me wrong about the Hawaiian thing. I love watching Hawaiians getting blissed on that slacked-out hillbilly yodeling. And I love that Hawaiians can get that way even without the dope – although I just might have to go out later and get Hawaiian-faced anyway.

    1/2 x ;-)

(And even smokeycretin: Don’t get me wrong about “Oblivian.” I know I’m an ass. Think I don’t know that already? It’s understood. Why do you think there’s a “DP” persona? Cuz no one else can do the job of putting me in my place properly. And I know that sounds very sick, but what else is new?)

People don’t have to defend their musical tastes. But at the same time, I’m not sorry for saying I don’t like stuff, and I’m not shy about saying why.

My dad kinda “beat” that into me, because when I was a kid I had to defend everything I liked to him. Needless to say, he didn’t like any of what I liked. He was from the Great Depression and not one but two generations away from me musically (Swing and Big Band). He was a VERY good man, but he got manipulated by fate into doing many things he didn’t want to do, one of which was having children. And he resented that.

And so, in our household, it was just assumed that children in general were mistakes of nature, and that I, in particular, was congenitally stupid, wrong, and insane: a great disappointment to him. And so was my whole spoiled and ungrateful generation.

And it was liking being gay or a nerd (see: “This Boy’s Life”). If you’re from a city it doesn’t matter because you can always find enough of your own kind to prove to yourself that you’re not shit after all. But if you’re from a small town, or you’re shy, you’re pretty much screwed from the git-go. Until the day you get outta Dodge.

Or . . . you could always be a bully and pick on those who were weaker or weirder than you for temporary relief. And I have to admit to my shame that I did get into some of that:

I was a very expressive kid, but if I said thing one against the music my dad liked, or Ronald Reagan, or . . . whatever . . . I caught hell. So I caught hell a LOT. That’s when my dad was speaking to me at all.

But I always caught LESS hell if I could give my Dad a reason why I liked what I liked or didn’t like what I didn’t. Cuz then I could prove to him that I wasn’t an imbecile, even if I did contradict him. And that in turn reflected well on him, as my father. If you can grok that sick logic.

So anyway that’s where I picked the mouthiness up. :-)

Along with a lot of other bad habits.

Ok, I’ll play out my primary fantasies. For a reason disclosed below, I spend a lot of time pondering what might being going on in the countless parallel universes/dimensions existing less than an atom apart from mine. Aside from theoretical physics, many world religions past and present discuss these dimensions. In 2nd Kings a servant upon seeing the vast forces arrayed against their abode, cries out to his King that they are certainly doomed…the King prays that the eyes of the servant be opened…then the servant looks again and sees trillions of heavenly forces arrayed above and against the foes. This story also suggests that parallel universes may affect our own, perhaps and perhaps what we do or think may affect other dimensions and how all that works or not. Or when Daniel has to pray for 21 days before the angel arrives with the response after which Daniel whines a bit about why the archangel took so long …and I see/watch the battle/warfare described by the angel and the forces he had to conquer prior to delivering the answer to Daniels’s realm. I see the stream of time battered by a strong opposing wind blowing a tiny rivulet and those living therein back to the past and wonder if there are people who huddle in stairwells who try not to affect the past to protect the future thy know and hope to rejoin. Are extra-terrestrials really from other dimensions rather than outer space? Are some able to freely go forward or backward in time/space and how might they appear and how might I recognize them and/or their imp[act here? Do countless other realities exist to fully play out the consequences of each decision one might make…such as if you marry ‘x’ or ‘z”… Why is there so much Déjà vu?

Ergo, Is there a dimension where my daughter did not die in my arms that Thanksgiving and where she is living her life and I know her? Would that dimension playing out negate the birth of my son and /or is there a time-space where we all exist together?

Of course then there is my childhood fantasy that I was really a space princess and one day my space mom and dad land the family spaceship on the Arbor Heights playground and I must away to do my space princess duties to the awe and wonder of all the other kids.

    In reply to: Greyhound Playgroup?

There used to be a Greyhound Playday at Greyt Dog Daycare (Northgate area). (It might be Great Dog Daycare.) About $3 for 90 mins. All of you Grey owners here already know that Greys do not “require” the great areas to run, but it is preferred. It is also understandable that most think that Greys need great big arreas to run around in. There is also a park up at the Indian Heritage School (at about N 90th St & Stone Way N). There are 2 ballfields on the E side of the that are fully fenced. There are 2 gates, one of which (the southern gate)is usually locked. The gate on the northern gate is closable, but few ever close it after they enter or leave. It is NOT a dog park, and I have had a neighbor give me flak for bringing Joey in, but, I was respectful and went in anyway. I have seen a couple of others there, on occasion, and know another Grey owner nearby who uses it.

World Citizen, actually, when you have a large dog charging your small child, there is no greater menace. And we are thankful – that we weren’t bit.

Thank you for the helpful advice Anonyme – I’ll remember it for next time and get a pic of their plate.

There were other dogs off leash, and yes, this entitled attitude is outrageous. Why do they think it’s ok to let their dogs roam free by the PLAYGROUND? As many times I have told my daughter not to run around dogs, when she is scared she will do this every time. I had her hand or she would have done it yesterday, instead of just screaming. This happened right as we were leaving the playground – if you are inconsiderate enough not to leash your dog, at least have enough sense that you DON”T let them run loose around children.

you are right, there are other organizations that do a much better job of providing more than a shelter bed

but those beds are often over-booked and do not adequately meet the needs of homeless people who want to stay with their families or their pets or to have a place to leave their stuff during the day so they can find and keep work.

we will only be able to see if tent cities can be run better when the rules governing them are widened to allow better services… and to allow not only non-religious non-profits but individuals to host them on available land.

in the meantime. nickelsville is there and there is a need for the shelter it provides.

As my special needs child and I were leaving the smaller playground at Lincoln Park, I saw 2 women walking near a large white dog with brown ears/markings. The dog was running loose, so I asked if it was their dog. One of them said yes, so I told her the dog needed to be on a leash. She actually said, “It doesn’t want to be”. The dog then suddenly charged at my child, who screamed, and only then did they rush to put the dog on the leash. I am just irate that this owner was so arrogant, and needlessly frightened my child. What if they hadn’t managed to get the dog before it reached my daughter? Shame on you for causing my child so much distress- it’s more than an hour later and she is still upset about it.
