JanSParticipantmaybe the next little anti-freeze meeting should be at Bakery Nouveau…mmm…chocolate…:)
November will come…the election will come…will we be happy? who knows. I will not worry over things that are in the future, that I can’t control anyway (except with my vote)…
deep breath, Charla :)

in forum West Seattle Rants & RavesJanSParticipantThis is to salute the wonderful people of West Seattle for making this the community that it is….and that includes the commenters on this blog. I have friends in other parts of the city who could give a damn what happens to someone 8,9,10 blocks away. It is definitely special living where we do, and wouldn’t be the same without all of you.
February 16, 2008 at 3:11 am #615440In reply to: Go Hillary
JoBParticipanti have met Hillary Clinton. Once a long time ago before she was anybody’s target. And again after she was first lady and a big target. and i have read her every speech and statement paper starting with her commencement speech. (ok, not every campaign speech.. she has done a lot f them lately) i even hung out in the bathroom with her once when she could still have relevant conversations in bathrooms with other women.
I know this woman. I know how idealistic she was in her youth. I know how hard she worked to get things done. I know she was willing to be a first lady instead of a candidate if that was what it was going to take to get things accomplished. And i know she found out quickly enough that she couldn’t do it that way. It wasn’t enough to be in a supporting position with a man who considered her his partner.
i know she has learned from her mistakes. The woman who idealistically tried to craft a compromise on health care has learned she needed to have ratified power to negotiate.
I know she has had to work harder and be nicer… and that there are very few places she could actually let anyone see that she was the smartest person in the room.
I know she is willing to work hard. And i know that she sees pattern in the details.. not just a idealized vision. I know that she can actually think on global terms… and still track details.
I know that she has a proven track record on women’s issues.. not just abortion, but sex slavery, mutilation, home based business, childcare, etc…. And i know that she is willing to defy even her party to use an international platform to promote those issues.
I know that she has a grasp of how much more cost efficient and productive it is to guarantee education and nutrition to American children and that she will find a way to pay for it.
There are those who may say that i simply see me in her.. but it’s not true. i would have handed bill his walking papers when he cheated. And i wouldn’t have worked so hard for a party that showed me such disrespect.
I also see how badly the Republican party has tried to paint her as bitchy, uncooperative, lieing, cheating, without principals, etc…
why do you think they went so far in attacking a first lady? Who can you think of who was so thoroughly trashed as first lady? They don’t spend money and resources blindly. I think they had a plan.
Hillary is and was seen early by the Republican party and their system as the first viable female candidate for President… and they have been doing everything they can to make sure we don’t think so.
They have been doing a great job. Even those who admit that most of the “scandals” aren’t her fault cite them as a reason she isn’t a viable candidate.
When Charla posted a link to a paper that pointed out the sexist manner that Hillary has been treated, not one man even mentioned the issue or commented in any way. It is easier to say that they don’t support Hillary because she is a bitch than to say they don’t support her because she is a woman.. and they use republican talking points to justify their hatred. The republicans did a great job.
I sent the same link to my republican brother who said that the writer was a fanatic (a woman) and that although some of it was inappropriate, he didn’t see it as sexist. this is a man who calls me the smartest person he knows… doesn’t stop him from arguing with me or ignoring the obvious though:)
Anyone the republicans hate that much should get our attention… Why is this woman such a target? What about her is so dangerous to their interests?
And finally, i would vote for hillary because she is a woman. When i went back to work in my early 20s, i had to get a permission slip signed from the husband i was divorcing for making bill look faithful in order to get a good enough job at a local department store to support my children.
I have a visceral memory of just what sexual discrimination looks like… and i wish i could say it is gone.
My daughter who is working on her PhD in enegineering had to fight her professor every step of the way to be able to look at detail in her research project and follow the detail to trends… which she then tested for validity. it was not the established male path to research (choose a result and find data that supports it). she has very nearly quit her PhD because of it.
She was recently commended by that same professor for her grasp of details and ability to identify trends that weren’t apparent… after her work was requested by an international symposium in china this may and another in japan next year. It will likely win huge awards for her and her professor.
She does incredibly good work, but she had to fight every step of the way to be allowed to do it.
I believe that any woman would be true change… a new way of looking at the problems we face.
I believe that this woman is especially good at doing with policy what my daughter does with soil. I believe the results would speak for themselves.
So that’s why.
i know this is an incredibly personal post and an incredibly personal opinion… but you asked and i felt that after holding yours and kayleighs feet to the fire, you deserved as honest an answer from me as you gave.

thanks for writing. this new voice, sense of hope, spirit thing is what i am getting everywhere.
If he is our candidate, i hope it works…
he’s not too sure though. he and move-on.org are petitioning democrats to pressure their party to lock super delegates to their state’s primaries.
Whether you think this is a good thing or a bad thing.. it doesn’t speak so much about his confidence.
i think i will send hillary some money today:)

February 16, 2008 at 1:07 am #615339In reply to: What is it about Charisma?
KayleighMemberOkay….and remember he’s not ‘my’ candidate; Edwards was my choice. Obama is my back-up choice.
Obama is young and handsome and energetic. He offers a true break from the past, a step away from old school democrats like Hillary and even Bill and hopefully a leap away from the broken dreams they remind me of. He has none of Hillary’s baggage (some of which is not her fault, but it’s there nonetheless.) He has a way of appearing to hover above the nasty political fray and believes (rightly or wrongly) that he can draw people together.
His voting record and online white papers (see his website) are progressive enough that I trust him to do his best to implement liberal policies.
He touches the hearts of young people, some not so much younger than I, who have the energy and idealism to help carry America forward.
The old Democrats’ ways have not gotten us very far in eight years; in fact, we’ve lost tremendous ground. It’s about more than policy and plans…it’s about a new voice and sense of hope.
No matter how smart she is, no matter that she’s a woman, no matter how die-hard her supporters are, I don’t get a real sense of hope from Hillary that she can turn the country around. That’s just a feeling, like you said, subjective. Doesn’t make me right.
I’m the first to say people should vote on policy and voting records and plans rather than personality–but I think many many Americans vote on personality. The thing is, what we see in others’ personality is something of a Rorscharch, isn’t it?
We all see something different in Hillary, and in that sense, I think she sometimes gets a raw deal. She’s too hard for some, too soft for others, too protective of her family or not protective enough, etc.
Sorry if I came across disrepectful—I continue to have bad days at work. Not good for my emotional welfare.

AnonymousInactiveJob, are you asking me that or stating it? If it’s a statement, it’s untrue.
I think the person for the big job (just like for any job), should be the best qualified, regardless of gender or race.
McCain is pretty liberal and I have stated before that I’m not completely on board.
I’m curious why people feel strongly about each candidate. I just pointed out that andrea seemed to suggest she was behind Hillary because of the simply fact that she is a woman.
JoB, let me ask you, why Hillary? What is she going to do for you that has you so on board?
February 16, 2008 at 12:12 am #615438In reply to: Go Hillary
JoBParticipantWE WANT HILLARY BECAUSE SHE IS THE BEST PERSON FOR THE JOB AND IT IS A BONUS THAT SHE HAPPENS TO BE A WOMAN!
i would say, oops, i shouted.. but i knew i was shouting.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if being a woman was thought of to be an advantage instead of an obstacle to overcome.
New resident, you want McCain just because he is a republican:)

AnonymousInactiveandrea, this kinda goes along with another thread, but I’m curious, why Hillary? From your post it seems you want her to be your candidate simply because she’s a woman. That can’t possible be your only justification. I am eager to find out what it is about each candidate that their supporters respond to.

i have never worn pajama bottoms as pants! I am a nice respectable little old lady:)
Now, i admit, i have left the front door to get the mail and i have entered my own back yard and i have occasionally answered the front door to solicitors in my flannel pajamas… but i am ill so i think that means bernicki would give me a pass:)
And new resident, should i see any kids in pjs i promise to high five them… these days you can’t offer them a cookie:)
and thanks for letting us know. if i had seen them without your information, i would have still been wondering what was with those kids:)
February 15, 2008 at 11:18 pm #615338In reply to: What is it about Charisma?
JoBParticipantWow.. look what happens when i go to lunch! I am really glad people are responding so positively to this thread. I am learning a lot.
Ken.. i didn’t know Ted Sorenson was still alive but perhaps he hit the nail on the head with one word… “spirit”, especially when he spoke of instilling spirit of service in the young.
Because that recalls those of us at the other end of the age spectrum of our youth:)
Comparing Kennedy and Obama has become quite a sport… they were both young.. they were both great speakers… they both inspired the youth… they both were members of a minority… i buy all of that. But that Obama’s speech about the Iraq war after we had already engaged in it showed similar judgment to Kennedy’s handling of the Cuban missile Crisis… not so much.
Kayleigh, just because i dispute objective evidence doesn’t mean i am not interested in subjective evidence.. what you think or feel.. not the rationalizations for feeling that way.
This isn’t’ about having Obama or Clinton as our candidate. I am still hoping she will pull it off. It’s about my lack of understanding the appeal of Obama. It’s not Clinton good.. Obama bad. It’s about why Obama?
I heard something on the radio while i was out that paraphrased was this: If we were choosing the best person for the job… it would be Clinton… but the best person to win and to inspire the nation is Obama.
My idealistic and dreamy self says that had there not been Obama, Clinton may have been able to do both…
but my more rational self says that had there not been Obama… we would probably be saying much the same things about Edwards.
I still don’t understand why so many rational people have chosen to look at the similarities between Obama and Kennedy (the great Presidential icon of our age) and not the differences… but they have.
And Ken, i will park my women’s lib self on the subject of the hatred of hillary and it’s base in fear:)… and the inconsistency i see there. Can we agree to disagree on that one ;-) or at least to call that one another thread for another time:)

AnonymousInactiveI agree that for someone to use our garbage cans for the disposal of their pets poo would be very much a violation. Why would I want to see and smell their dogs poo? Most people I know who are pet owners are responsibile and take bags and paper towels along on walks and take their dogs poo home with them. So far we haven’t had anyone deposit poo in our cans.

The house I am referring to is on 34th and it only has 1 dog a beautiful shephard mix that does not have a fur coat for cold and wintery days and nights. I have wanted to say something to the owners without totally offending them, but they apparently are gone all day and if I threw a blanket over the fence it would do very little on soggy days.
February 15, 2008 at 9:42 pm #615337In reply to: What is it about Charisma?
AnonymousInactiveThat was an inspiring speech (I’m sure he had help writing it), but what is his PLAN, Ken, that has you so supportive of him? What, exactly, is he ready to do to make our Country better?
I think anyone can give an inspiring speech about the history of America. It tells me nothing, though, about where he is going and how. That’s what I would like to know.
February 15, 2008 at 9:14 pm #615335In reply to: What is it about Charisma?
AnonymousInactivePrayingMan-tis-i… I agree. I think it is extremely informative and interesting to find out exactly what makes one person “love” one candidate over another. I wanted to know specifics as to how Obama is inspiring sooo much hope in so many people. I’m obviously on the other side of the fence, but I really want to know specifics. I would really like Ken to answer only because he seems so knowledgeable and is always able to convey what he thinks through his writing. I am very interested in this topic.
February 15, 2008 at 8:48 pm #615332In reply to: What is it about Charisma?
KenParticipantCheney proved, once and for all, that experience is not a prerequisite for good decision making or even basic sanity.
Clinton only offers hope in a backhanded way. She would be far better then any of the Republicans.
Neither Dem candidate is progressive enough for me and I am not a lock step progressive anyway. (I believe the second amendment is pretty clear and easy to understand)
However, the alternative of fear is hope. That is the thing we all miss.
I quit being fearful a long time ago.
Most of you, perhaps, don’t remember the time when we huddled under out wooden desks as if they could protect us from the world. Most of you did not grow up with the only TV station being owned by Jesse Helms, and watch his daily attempts to make everyone within the sound of his voice, afraid of communist, Negros and fifth columnist (which I never really did understand just who might that be unless it meant those who were not afraid.)
Terrorist do not, and never have had the goal of destroying this country, the goal of terror is to create unreasoning fear and let the target destroy themselves with it.
Some of the younger voters and first time voters have had to come to the same realization.
A chance at a life of hope is better than a life based on fear.
Also I suspect some of them are better at math than the older set :)
The odds of getting hit by lightning while playing golf (even on a clear day) are better than getting injured in a terrorist attack.
The odds of getting killed by a drunk driver are quite high compared to getting in any situation where an assault rifle is the answer.
And the odds of a gay person getting married having any effect on my life in any way, only rise above zero if I am invited to the wedding.
So why are we making decisions, or letting out representatives make decisions based on unreasonable fear.
I choose hope over fear.
And at this moment in time, Obama has the edge in the hope department.
It would be a simple thing for Hillary to fold a little hope into her stump speech.
She could get Ted Sorenson (JFK’s speechwriter)
oops I just checked to make sure he was still alive and found this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hupgC1d-St8
Well that kinda thing can derail a good rant :)
Who is writing Hillary’s speeches?
Damifino.
But if she can insert a little hope for the future she could still pull out of the “Joementum” she is creating for herself.

Remember, unless it’s Pajama Day at your school, pajama pants are worn at bedtime, around the house on a lazy weekend, or if you are too ill to get dressed. Please do not wear them to restaurants, the post office, the grocery store, or anyplace else that might be defined as “in public.” This whole “rehab chic” thing HAS GOT TO END.

February 15, 2008 at 6:44 pm #615331In reply to: What is it about Charisma?
charlabobParticipantNR, I give the young-uns more credit; my 21 year-old friend moved from Obama to Clinton because she thought Obama made promises he couldn’t deliver and he was all sizzle. (I never could talk her into Edwards, because she’d decided he was homophobic — ya’ win some and ya’ lose some.)
Perhaps someone with allure and excitement *is* the best candidate for us now. Perhaps that’s what we need to get back into the world community and get out of this nationwide Non-Economic Depression. Or not. The best candidate is the one most likely to *help me* create the kind of world I want. Now, if I could only figure out who and what that is — and stick to it for five minutes.
JoB, I’m best at dewinding my own sails — imagine what it’s like to have endless arguments with myself. I either always or never win.
