Some years ago I needed a new mattress and stopped in at a mattress store down on 1st Ave S. As I walked in the door I was approached by a saleswoman and told her I needed a new mattress. “And what will you be using the mattress for?” she asked.

“Uh, sleeping primarily” I replied, a little stunned at the question. She then pointed out their display of mattresses for me to look at and walked away. So did I. That store wasn’t in business long.

Offering this as a collection of light-hearted ranting because it’s so insane it’s hysterical … :-> … Would be curious to know yours … you know, so we can all chuckle and drop our jaws at other people’s expense …

Tonight, QFC. My member number–my phone number of 10+ years–doesn’t work at checkout. After four tries on my part, clerk offers, “Perhaps you’re just missing a digit or something. Are you sure that’s your number?”

A few years ago, Burien Toyota AND Michael’s Toyota. With the car I’d owned for two years and bought new, my engine makes not an utter when I turn the key. Spend an hour on this, then call the shops. “Wellll, are you sure you’re turning your key correctly? That’s usually the problem–people don’t know how to turn on their ignition right.”

And one last one, a whopper really from this summer. Contractor building a house down the street approaches me about how he can do *me* the favor of dumping two or three truckloads of dirt in my backyard so I can level it off and plant grass or something. “Yeah,” I say, “that would be awesome, but you know I have to be really careful about drainage on this slope, my basement flooded once because I didn’t properly clean my gutters, and so no I don’t want to create any drainage problems.” Him: “Oh, no, it’d be no problem. It’s not gonna do any harm with the drainage. Probably make it better. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

    K. Gimme some back.

I used to work in credit cards and had someone that called me and told me the police had found her card, I said oh? Yes, they called and told me they found it and needed me to give them my pin to verify who I was…. SERIOUSLY?

it would be incredibly uncommon to become editor of the law review without excellent grades…

“Gore and Kerry were way better speakers than Bush (well, who isn’t?), but when college transcripts were revealed – Bush had better grades then both of them.”

    when comparing transcripts..

it’s helpful to look at class content..

    Having met Bush younger once..

back when his mother thought the other son was the real contender

i can attest to the fact that he wasn’t what you would call a scintillating conversationalist either.

    As for that elusive scandal…

don’t you think it’s time that you started looking for something with current content?

All pursuing scandals in the Clinton presidency got us was Monica .. oh… and a huge bill… and enough distraction for Osama’s merry little band to slip through the cracks…

Ultimately.. that was one very expensive witch hunt.

Am I the only one growing tired of the “sly” advertisements for Bamboo Bar & Grill?

P.S. They’re not sly at all — they’re quite obvious, actually.

Case Study 2: Countries That Were Once Our Enemies

In contrast to Viet Nam, which, once upon a time tried to be our friend, and paid dearly for it, Germany and Japan engaged in all-out wars of aggression against us and our allies.

But after we had defeated them, we became best of friends and helped them get back on their feet with a timely infusion of cash and consumer goods, aka the “Marshall Plan.”

Granted, there was an angle with the Marshall Plan (there’s always an angle) but in any case, these two countries eventually got back on their feet and rose to become such strong competitors to us that one can only marvel and ask: Why did we we treat these former sworn enemies of ours so generously, while treating another country (a country that had once sought our friendship) so cruelly?

    And indeed, it’s a wonderment.

In fact, I don’t know the answer. I’m only trying to describe what happened.

In my next post, I’ll describe, in the same general terms, the role the US has played in the Middle East over time.

    Until then . . .

A ? to both men and women. I was just wondering if the sluggish economy, and struggling to make ends meet, has both parties looking to hook or shack up with someone for those reasons but won’t admit it?

hooper – so we should set higher speed limits because drivers want to go faster and because the poor drivers get frustrated? LOL!

Have you read “Traffic?” It discusses lower speed limits in detail and why they are safer and can actually improve traffic flow. Not only that, but motorists are not the only road users. Name one place where traffic is allowed to go as fast as they want with no stringent traffic regulations and that has a low accident/fatality rate per accident (that includes pedestrians, cyclists, farm machinery etc.). And I want a link to your documentation.

    Traffic: http://www.amazon.com/Traffic-Drive-What-Says-About/dp/0307264785

I believe I have posted this link before, a good study on speed which you may be referring to: http://www.ibiblio.org/rdu/sl-irrel.html

Note that the study was conducted only on nonlimited access rural and urban highways, not interurban multi-use streets. And the conclusion was that speed limits even on rural and urban highways should NOT be automatically raised, but the idea should be studied to make sure that it’s deemed safe to do so.

“The data collected during this study indicate that there are no benefits, either from a safety or operational point of view, from establishing speed limits less than the 85th percentile speed. This does not mean that all speed limits should be raised. Traffic and engineer investigations should be conducted to obtain an accurate measure of the speed distribution.”

    And here’s a good counterpoint:

You can also use jail toilets as a form of communication by emptying the water out, then talk into it like an aluminum can to the next inmate above or below you. It works as I’ve seen it on the TV series Lockdown. By the way, Mubarak has been ousted. I see the waving of shoes in the air and slamming them into the ground works. I did that when Bush was president but got no attention. They thought I was mental.

Yep – we usually ask friends or family to mind the cat, or if it’s a short trip give her big bowls of food and water. She sleeps most of the time and it’s probably a vacation for her when the 4-year-old isn’t home to ‘play’.

    Hi there!

The Chaco Canyon Organic Cafe is looking for F/T (4-5 shifts, 28-35 hours a week) workers to join our wonderful and NEW West Seattle team! We are specifically looking for people that are looking for a lengthy tenure with us, plus have supervisory experience and leadership aspirations. Having a love of delicious, organic/raw/vegan/allergen-friendly cuisine wouldn’t hurt, either.

A bit about Chaco Canyon Organic Cafe:

Our goal is to continually seek to set the standard on what it means to be a Sustainable Cafe. We make all business decisions with the goal of having people, the planet and profitability in balance. We never compromise on our mission, and our ultimate goal of being 100% sustainable. We wear our hearts on our sleeves and demonstrate this in the way we welcome and take care of customers and employees, donate to local and national causes that share our values, source our ingredients, and prepare every dish. We give people (and ourselves) goosebumps with what we show is possible with a cafe, and what a difference one place can make for the world and our community.

If this resonates with you, read on!

A Bit About the Open Positions:

The available positions are in the front of house. If you’re not familiar with us, we do not offer table service, so all FOH folks work the following stations: counter/register, espresso, smoothie/juice, mid-kitchen (making all the food that goes to guests) and dishwashing. Food prep, cleaning, and building genuine, caring relationships with customers are also expectations of the job; we have fun and are a great place to work, and we have high expectations for work ethic and integrity in everyone we hire. We ONLY have F/T positions available at the this time, and you must be available to work weekends.

If you are interested, please submit a resume and cover letter addressed to Sarah in Word or pdf form to sarah@chacocanyoncafe.com. Submissions without a cover letter will not be considered. We would love to hear from you by Monday, Feb. 14th.

You can also direct any preliminary questions my way. Thank you for your interest, and look forward to hearing from you!

My heart swells with hope to encounter a few non-believers here. It’s lonely out there…

I agree with redblack on Talarico’s. For some reason their simple blue cheese wedge salad just hits the spot for me. It goes well with that huge “south side” slice and a couple of Stella’s!

Zenguy: What if my car (private property) were parked illegally on a public street. Could DP take it upon himself haul it away and junk it?

Not at all intending to criticize DP. The clutter of those signs, and the audacity of companies that use public rights of way for advertising, annoys me too. But there IS the concept of due process to consider. There is a system in place for government to deal with private parties who break the law. DP did the most expedient and effective thing. But it still seems a slippery philosophical slope to me.

I believe in spirit and in the snake eating it’s own tail. I am a Taoist mostly, a Buddhist sometimes, and a Catholic once or twice a year. I think religion is both asinine and necessary. I love complexity. I think life is God and if you are alive, you are part of the God and if you are dead, … I don’t know. I hope it’s fun. I do believe in some kind of soul. I only believe in what I resonate with intuitively and if that changes a previously held belief, so be it.

    Great thread.

Do you think you would ever see Kerry Killinger (of WAMU fame) on a utility pole in 25 degree weather, handling strewn high voltage power lines??? In the dead of night? After 2 hours of sleep?

    I rather doubt it.

Redblack, I agree completely. I read Ken’s post (#8) right before i ran out the door at work to catch a bus, but I so wanted to reply with pretty much exactly what you said — because Ken made a good point, and you an excellent response.

I don’t know if it’s exclusively American or if it extends to other parts of the globe, but there’s this tendency to scoff at the idea of an “uneducated” person making a comfortable living. We hear it every day when people talk about how bus drivers, truck drivers, sanitation workers, etc. are overpaid. Overpaid by what standards, exactly? If you ask someone this question (and I have), the response is something about how it’s wrong to pay that much for “unskilled labor.” Because we don’t require a baccalaureate degree for the position* we believe the position should not pay very much. This is quite an elitist attitude, obviously: “I had to pay $90,000 for my college education and only get paid $50,000 per year, but this guy didn’t even go to college** and they pay him $100,000? Clearly that’s wrong.”

*With education inflation (the value of college degrees decreasing), I imagine it’s only a matter of time before that changes. In a few decades, a master’s degree will be required to operate a bus. (Maybe then the profession will be respected?)

**Another flawed line of thinking, as plenty of people working “labor” or service jobs do have college degrees. Some are smart enough to realize they can get paid $100,000 plus overtime to work a (difficult and stressful) job rather than getting paid half that and no over time to work a job that’s difficult and stressful in other ways.

The truth is perceptions change slowly as the older generation (no insult meant) is replaced by the younger. My grandmother is 94 (depending on who you believe…she still lies about her age) and still feels like men are more qualified to do home repairs, even though my mother totally knows as much as I do.
