Well, my insurance company told me today that since my car is so old the cost of the repairs tipped the scale toward “totalling” my car, so that’s swell. But it only has 50K miles on it. Sigh.

SPD reiterated that with so many collisions city wide they have to allocate their time on investigating ones where people are injured, and that I could keep the quasi-identifying debris, or have them log it into evidence with unknown (probably slim*) chance of them even contacting Yellow Cab to ask who was in that area at that hour.

The Cunning Coward has possibly fixed his front bumper by now – but in case he hasn’t, I’m pleading with readers to keep an eye out for a Toyota Prius Yellow Cab missing that silver grill piece and with damaged front bumper, if you see it parked looking like it “lives” in West Seattle.

Thanks for the commiseration and advice, it is appreciated. At least I can vent! And then drive around fruitlessly searching for that Menacing Motorist.

    * The word “slim” was not said by the officer; it is my impression that he was not sanguine about the odds.

Don’t worry, no offense was taken, as I understand they were comments about other riders in general, and figured that you, anonyme, and others would allow logical exceptions in your views. Plus, I actually agree with most, if not all of the comments, when speaking of other (presumably able-bodied) riders.

Just thought of another peeve that’s gotta be a common one as well; legs stretched across the aisle, not being moved as others try to get by.

It happened just yesterday, on that 128, coming back Home to Highland Park from Thriftway. A young male, (looked to be one of the school kids) and an adult woman. They were practically across from each other, in the front, aisle facing seats.

Fortunately for me, being in that first spot, I didn’t have to negotiate them on my way out, but I did see at least one person struggle to get around the woman’s feet/legs. (I think the guy drew his legs back in).

Good points, but I do have to say that on the (fortunately relatively rare) occasions that I have to stand, I’ve become one of those that generally won’t go past the area of the first forward facing seat, because I no longer have my “bus legs” that I had for decades of riding Metro. I pretty much need the little divider panel, between that forward facing seat, and the aisle facing seats, to support myself along with a death-grip on the vertical stanchion, to keep me from flying around as the coach stops, starts and turns. But I do try to scrunch up the best I can, to let others by.

I do try to remove my backpack, when I have it, to avoid the very situations described above. But sometimes, if I have packed with heavy stuff, it’s difficult to impossible for me to hold it in my free hand for any length of time, especially if I already have heavy shopping bags to hang onto, and if I try to put it on the floor between my feet, it’s going to be a challenge not to get tangled in it while dealing with the jerks, (inertia, not other passengers) ;-) and trying to keep it from falling over and becoming a trip hazard for other passengers.

Oh, and I’m juggling a cane too!

As far as the more able-bodied folks giving up their seats to the seniors/lesser-abled; Yes! Please!

Now, on the 60 coming back from Harborview, (an average once a week trip) it can be crowded enough that I occasionally have to stand until maybe 12th & Jackson, with a lot of stops, starts, and turns.

Trouble is, with that Route serving at least three Medical Facilities, the other passengers often appear to be no more able-bodied than myself, and sometimes lesser-abled.

It’s not unusual to have at least one, or even two scooters/chairs, and add into the mix, maybe any combination of walkers, and shopping carts, what with the Route also serving the (perhaps loosely considered) upper edge of the International District, with a lot of shopping options.

Now, the 128 is a different story.

I have resorted to trying to make my once per week-ish trips to Thriftway on Sundays, as not only is it a bit quicker of a ride than weekdays, what with the Route not taking that back-tracking jog to the College, but in the early to mid-afternoon on the Runs heading to Southcenter, and even occasionally on the late morning Runs to Admiral, the bus can be rather crowded with College kids.

Add to that, in the early to mid-afternoons kids from Madison and West Seattle High, the 128 can be often packed. I’ve seen the bus barely clear of standees by the time it gets to the College, where it will sometimes once again become packed to the gills. That happened a few weeks ago, and when I got off my regular stop at southbound 16th & Henderson, one you man was actually courteous/bright enough, to step off the coach for a moment, as suggest above.

Yesterday was one of those once a month times that I visited Thriftway on a weekday, after a haircut and lunch in the Junction. I was actually a bit surprised, when I stepped on the bus at 42nd & Morgan, that there were Jr. or Sr. High kids on already, at 1:30 in the afternoon. Not totally packed like before, but a few standees, as I recall. I lucked out that the first aisle facing seat behind the door was just vacated by the guy that got off there, so I didn’t have to ask one of the young people to give me their seat.

And yes, after a few times of not doing so, standing there juggling a couple heavy bags of groceries, a cane, and perhaps the backpack if I made the quick decision that it would be a(n) (admittedly not much) better option to leave it on, while hanging on for dear-life, I need to start asking for a seat from an able-bodied appearing person, if none is offered.

In any case, nowadays, I don’t like to be too far back in the bus (after being a decades long preference of sitting allllllll the way back in the bus), as stepping down off the bus can be a challenge, and quite often is not only risky enough from the front door, but much more so from the back, especially at the stops in both directions on 16th at Henderson; narrow uneven parking strips, narrow sidewalks, and located in such a way that it’s difficult for the Driver to get even the front door close and parallel to, the curb.

Please forgive if this seems a bit convoluted. Just so much to say, and as usual, my brain types way faster than my hands. I’ll be for than happy to clarify any points that may seem confusing.

I’ll put in a plug for the Pathfinder wreaths – they are all hand-made from locally gathered greens and other interesting foliage by families, staff, and students. There are some seriously talented wreath-makers in the bunch! All the proceeds support Pathfinders’ outdoor education programs, including camping trips and other adventures. I’ll be buying about 6 of them this weekend! :)

Beyond important for people to take note, really embarrassing for our community that we have to remind others to be mindful of others, and themselves!

We have absolutely dreadful driving around Westside school during pick up and drop off hours. Today I saw a mom/guardian turn in front of a car, the driver of the other car slammed on his breaks, and then the mom slowed down during the turn to send a text! Had that car not been able to stop, it would have t-boned the car right at the point in the rear where her child was riding.

It’s important to recognize we’re part of a bigger picture than ourselves. Especially when we’re on the road are risking the safety of others with our poor decisions.

Two more: take the backpack off BEFORE you board the bus. There isn’t enough room to take it off inside without hitting someone.

When you get on board with your dripping umbrella, hold it down near the floor – not elevated, where you drench everyone along the aisle as you search for your special reserved seat.

One extra: guys, please stand facing forward (or backward) and not sideways with your groin thrust to within two inches of the face of a seated female passenger. I sometimes experience tics that cause my elbow to jab sharply upward.

This may be a little snarky, but it’s also dead on:

    PSA: Standing the Right Way

I’d add two things to it:

    – Take off your bulky bag or backpack and hold it down by your feet. It leaves more room in the aisle for other people to stand, and has the added bonus that you won’t unintentionally smack your seated fellow riders in the head with your stuff.

    – If the bus is filling up and you’re close to an empty seat, just sit down. You can always offer the seat to another rider later if that seems appropriate, but in the meantime you won’t be blocking the aisle.

A great trick to keep you hummingbird feeders thawed is to duct tape a hand warmer (hot hands) to the bottom of the feeder before you go to bed. I have found that it keeps the feeder thawed until morning. This morning one of the feeders was slushy though.

Congrats, Lindsey! Sounds like you got nice check from the karma bank account that you obviously had been building up over the months/years? :-)

I’m hoping for something similar in the coming months. Turned down what was on its face a very good gig in a desirable locale on the notion that what I’m building here will bloom even more fully this coming year. Fingers crossed. Gulp. Hope my account is flush. ;-)

I was asked to elaborate on this topic in another forum post https://westseattleblog.com/forum/topic/idiotic-motorist, here is my response:

There are a few reasons why most big school buses do not have seatbelts and this driver endorses all of them. There might be more that I am not aware of, however I strongly feel these 3 are enough.

    1) In the event of a water-landing or fire aboard the bus and all the occupants need to evacuate quickly there most likely will be a few younger children who cannot undo their seatbelts and will need assistance.

So imagine that a majority of the students aboard are evacuating the bus through any of the doors thus filling the aisle and preventing the driver from making his/her way to those children in need.

Fortunately for this driver who is in his mid-50’s, I have the capability to crawl across the tops of the seats to make my way to those needing my help and will do so, then once I stick my arm down into their lap and undo the buckle I will instantly get a pair of arms clinging to me for dear life as any young child will do. (How many drivers do you think also have the same physical capabilities AND the wherewithal to do so?)

So with the first child freed and hanging onto me, that leaves only one other free arm and most likely more than one still needing my help.

    2) As we are fully aware, there are those students who don’t always abide by the rules, so then we could have one or two, or more who won’t buckle their seatbelts thus creating more ‘battles’ for the driver to have to deal with while still trying to navigate their 40’ long, 12-13 ton vehicle through our narrow neighborhood streets.

Dealing with the safety issues (staying seated IN your seat, nothing but air or water in your mouth, keep your bodies out of the aisle, etc.) are paramount while driving, which is enough to have to handle, let alone trying to talk or verbally force Billy or Bonnie to buckle their seatbelt. Heaven forbid we should ‘touch’ them while trying to do so!!!!!

    3) Then there are those students who are downright mean or vengeful who could use the seatbelt buckle as a weapon to swing and hit their neighboring student(s) with. Or secretly tie another student or his/her backpack with the seatbelt creating an additional fiasco at that child’s stop, or during the need for an emergency evacuation.

    ***

I trust (hope) this helps with your understanding as to why I personally endorse the ‘no seatbelt’s’ on big school buses policy.

As long as every driver is diligent about consistently enforcing the safety rules on their bus, seatbelts will not be needed. As long as parents do their job of teaching their children to respect those adults who hold an authoritative position over them*, then the safety rules will be MUCH easier to enforce.

*We all know that there are some adults in our world who will abuse this power, stay innocent when reading this portion as that is how it is intended.

I agree with you, StringCheese. And I love the Y. I was a member at Allstar until about 2 years ago then switched…very timely considering the mess that Allstar has turned into from what I read on these forums.

The Y is not a gym for profit. They do a lot of other things for the community, provide other services besides exercise facilities. Volunteers often service the desks and I think that’s great; they always have a bright smile and now most greet me by name. Other pools bar opposite genders in locker rooms after age 5 or so; my son took swimming lessons a long time ago at Seattle Pacific and the only thing they could offer me was to have him change in a utility closet, tho I am sure they have other options now. I think the poolside changing booths the YMCA offers are great compared to that.

Obviously the Y is not the best fit for everyone. And no facility or organization is perfect. But I think it is a great benefit to West Seattle that it is there and I love the pool.

No, TVB, you aren’t the only one. (Although this Christmas is the first in many years that my smile didn’t cause the clerk, and anyone else that I was in line of sight of, to shriek and run in fear, as if Godzilla was tromping through town chasing them).

And I’d be honored to once again dog-sit the young lady that I’m a Proud Funcle to! One caveat though, if your planned time away coincides with any forecast snow, I generally hibernate, since I don’t do well walking on icy, slippery, surfaces.

Am I the only one who goes ridiculously over-the-top smiley and friendly to retail clerks at this time of year? I’ve worked retail, and worked a Holiday Season at a major bookstore chain–ugh. I got so frustrated with one guy who completely rude that after I’d taken him to the book he wanted I asked, “So, am I dismissed?” He looked utterly chagrined and apologized.

I’m thankful that I no longer work in retail and have a full-time job after four YEARS of unemployment in a great organization that helps kids.

I’m thankful for friends like MIWS who dog-sit for me! Speaking of which…you may be hearing from me Mike… ;-)

Every school-morning I drive approximately 15 miles through the streets of west Seattle and am horribly-amazed at how some drivers are operating their potential death-machines in our neighborhoods yesterday and today.

Anyone who parks their vehicle outside overnight in weather like we’re having now will need to scrape the windows before driving, plain and simple.

But there are some who must be in such a hurry they only scrape a small portion of the windshield right in front of the drivers position with the thinking (I’m guessing) that they only need to see DIRECTLY in front of them!

The rest of the windshield often shows signs of the wiper-blades having been run across the frost which only serves to chewing up the rubber on them, and maybe a little thawing at the bottom where the heater has be able to do some work.

In some cases the front-side windows haven’t been touched either, making the side mirrors a useless appendages on their dangerous machine.

Do these drivers only need to drive in a straight line from point A to point B?! Not in my west Seattle!!!

In the last two days I have seen two accidents which, from this observers point-of-view, were direct results of someone negotiating a turn (blindly) into another car that probably would have been avoided if the driver could see out of their entire windshield.

And on a separate, yet related topic: If you are one who chooses to scrape your windows so you can drive safely, thank you, but please DO IT SAFELY!!!

Please look for on-coming traffic BEFORE stepping into the lane to walk to the drivers side of your car.

Numerous times yesterday and this morning I had to come to a sudden stop or swerve into the on-coming lane to avoid smacking a person with the mirrors that stick out (and a little to the side) of my school bus. If I wasn’t able to avoid hitting them, that would leave a very ugly mark on your body. (and the camera in the bus recording what is happening out the windshield will back-up my version of what transpired)

Additionally, imagine what happens to the children inside the bus when it quickly goes from 25mph to 0 to avoid hitting someone or something?

This is the reason why so many of us drivers drive slower than the posted speed limit, because of the precious cargo sitting behind us and what happens to their bodies in a sudden stop. (There are valid reasons why most big-buses don’t have seatbelts and I’d be happy to elaborate on them if asked.)

In closing: PLEASE PEOPLE~Please take a few extra minutes to scrape all the windows you need to see out of to drive safely. The time you save by not scraping will be quickly lost if you should be in (cause) a fender-bender, or worse, injury someone.

To those motorist who take a few seconds to give my and other school buses room, time and/or the understanding that we have many extenuating circumstances that cause us to do what we do, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Although all of my passengers are someone else’s children, they all are my “little darlings” and I (we) care about them very much. We too want them to return home safely and unharmed every day.

    Peace…

    Sorry .. i can’t let this pass.

democrats have owned up to their participation in slavery and made attempts to correct it….

that’s what the entire civil rights movement was/is about..

It’s not lost on us that the President who effectively ended slavery in this nation was not a democrat.

but excusing current rampant racism as a political ploy with the argument that democrats don’t own up to their own racism won’t earn you any points here.

i don’t agree with your premise that Obama has been a disaster so far

but i do have a question for you

do you think you would have thought Obama was such a disaster if your party had not spent it’s entire time in Congress trying to derail any program he endorsed?

One of the things we should have learned from the Clinton presidency is that when the nation’s government is too busy with a political witch hunt against the other party to govern..

    disasters are far more likely.

wouldn’t we have been better served focusing our president’s attention on issues… for Clinton that would have been Al Queda… for Obama that would be our economy…

than focusing on trashing their effectiveness?

One thing you can say about democrats during the tenure of Bush Jr… they didn’t spend their time in office trying to derail the second President Bush …

in spite of the fact that he was responsible for some impeachable offenses against the world and this nation..

what has happened during the last two democratic presidencies is not business as usual…

you demand that democrats hold Obama accountable for the slightest offense…

don’t you think it’s time those who support the current do nothing party held them accountable for doing the nation’s business?

Accountability should apply equally to all…

This morning on December 3rd around 2 am, a vehicle rear-ended my car which was parked on the north side of SW Oregon, west of California Ave SW. They were heading west, and seeing as how they hit the back of my car close to dead center, they were also driving about 10 inches from the curb. Didn’t slow down, no skid marks. By the time I got outside there were no other vehicles in the area. It *may* belong to someone who was driving home in that direction.

The hit and run vehicle seems to have an after-market yellow paint job. Along with yellow paint scrapes on my car, they left some fragments of their vehicle including a chrome (plastic?) piece from the front top nose of their vehicle. It looks like it was jarred loose and popped off, left on the ground behind my car.

    1) Any readers know what make and model it is from?

    2) If you have noticed a local vehicle of that color with new very specific front-end damage to the front bumper including that missing piece on the front, please contact me vie email (langyao at gmail dot com), or contact SPD, incident #13-434305.

    Thank you!

I don’t have a specific recommendation for you but I do have a few suggestions. First I’d check with my son’s doctor and speak to him/her and get recommendations from them or have them point you in the right direction for resources.

    .

Is this for the long-term? Do you have health insurance? If so, you could probably go to their website and look up therapists who are in your network. You can sort by location, specialty, gender, accepting new patients, etc. You could even phone your ins company and have them mail you a list.

    .

If you don’t have insurance then you could research online for someone and ask them about a sliding scale fee. You could also check out what services are available at your son’s school and maybe he could see a counselor there, or you could ask them for recommendations for family counselors.

    .

Please don’t get discouraged; it can be daunting at times finding the right ‘fit’ of a therapist for your son and/or family.

    .

Lots of teens ‘see’ someone so it’s not a big deal in that respect, so having that attitude while moving forward will help your son and family.

    .

I hope I helped a bit. I find most people don’t really know how to get started. Good luck.
