In reply to: Termites anyone?
sanMemberThanks for the responses and advice. I found out today that it was/is termites :(
The inspector found a few spots and we are on the road to repair. I am so bummed, because we had a thorough inspection prior to purchase, and nothing was even noted. The termite company that was out today seems to think this was a problem long before we closed. It just put me in a terrible mood. I guess we ( my hubby and I ) should be grateful we were smart enough to ( or able to! ) start a “House Crisis” savings account before buying. These little turds aren’t cheap to remedy. Honestly, we didn’t even realize how prevalent they are in Washington state. So, homeowners— add this to your list of things to sweat over! Thanks for all your good words and thoughts.
December 29, 2007 at 11:26 pm #586186amyParticipantI’m looking for a recommendation for a WS massage therapist with experience with pregnancy massage. I’m experiencing a stiff upper back and neck pain, and have a month yet to go (and lots more work to do to get ready). I appreciate any recommendations that you have. I may call Head to Toe, but I really don’t need the whole spa experience, just someone I can see for brief sessions for a few weeks. Thanks!

JanSParticipantthere is a post about this in the archives dated Dec.15, 2007 under the topic “transportation” in the right hand column, I believe….

acemotelParticipantdo a google search of Alki and sidewalks. here’s one for starters:
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2004035107_sidewalks26m.htmlyou can even search this blog, where everything is explained. All will be revealed. :-)
December 29, 2007 at 6:27 pm #613432In reply to: Termites anyone?
KatherineMemberAre you sure it’s termites and not carpenter ants? A good pest control company should be able to tell you. Either way, much sympathy. As an inexperienced home owner, you might consider joining Home Owners Club. They recommend contractors who’ve done good work for other members. And contractors are more likely to make good any problems so they don’t get taken off the recommended list.

patriciaMemberThanks for the referral to the previous discussion on this topic! I see the the Junction True Value does scissors, I love that place! Definitely going there!

WSBKeymasterWe did discuss contractors in this thread a few months ago – maybe there’s something helpful here if you haven’t combed it already:

good luck!

grrParticipantLest you forget..WS’s own Jade West Cafe (tucked quietly next to the West Seattle Wine Cellar) is a true JEM. Mr. Wah is simply the best.
December 29, 2007 at 7:06 am #613097In reply to: Restaurants
westwoodMemberThe ID is packed with great Chinese restaurants. It all depends on what you like.
Here are a few of my favorites:
House of Hong, China Gate, O’Asian for dim sum–although most Chinese restaurants do a pretty good job with dim sum in the ID, avoid Ocean City.
For a great Chinese cheap lunch–Shanghai Garden, HoHo Seafood Restaurant, Hing Loon all come to mind.
As for WS–HoWin is about the quality of the Safeway steam table. Don’t worry about labels, just go to Lee’s and order the chinese dishes there on the menu. The chef used to be the lead chef at Wild Ginger for the first several years.
December 29, 2007 at 6:52 am #613458In reply to: Stopping For Pedestrians!
westwoodMemberIf you are on foot, you tend to feel cars are a menace. If you are on bike, you are annoyed with pedestrians and terrified by cars. If you are in a car everyone is simply in your way.
Stupid peds don’t excuse bad drivers. Most of us drive too fast, with too many distractions–stereo, cellphone, kids, etc. to really pay attention. The difference is that we are piloting a huge metal container around at high speeds.
We need to have better sidewalks, crosswalks, signage and sightlines for pedestrians. As Seattle becomes denser in the future there will be relatively more peds and bikes and relatively less cars. The time to plan is now.
JanSParticipantoh, yum…their deep fried mushrooms…the best. Now I’ll have to leave WS so I can have some – lol…..

JanSParticipanthehehe…House…I’m afraid our prison system couldn’t handle them all. And I totally agree with you. I, too, am both. As a pedestrian I walk with a cane, hopefully temporarily. I’m a little slower than the average person, so really have to be heads up about where and when I cross. As a driver I try to pay attention, but we have to remember that we have a big hunk of metal (erm…sometimes plastic…hehe) around us, and it’s not always able to stop on a dime. There are times when drivers are damned if they do, and damned if they don’t.
December 29, 2007 at 6:41 am #613170In reply to: Restaurants Open on Christmas?
JanSParticipantgrr…that’s a great service…but it has it’s limitations. The only Westside restaurant that it lists is Salty’s…and there are so many other places on the peninsula that I’d rather go to :)
December 29, 2007 at 6:38 am #613456In reply to: Stopping For Pedestrians!
TheHouseMemberI’m both a pedestrian and driver in West Seattle and Downtown Seattle. The fact of the matter is that there is fault on both sides of the coin on this matter. Yes, there are many drivers that ignore crosswalks but there are just as many pedestrians that either don’t pay attention crossing the road or dont pay attention to the crosswalk signals. When you’re driving 30-40 mph and don’t see a pedestrian until right before the crosswalk, you may be risking an accident more by slamming on your brakes (might get rear ended). The easiest way to avoid all of this is if we simply jail stupid people.

grrParticipantsign up at ‘opentable.com’. Great site.
December 29, 2007 at 3:32 am #613454In reply to: Stopping For Pedestrians!
grrParticipantwhen Pedestrians start PAYING ATTENTION and learn that a Flashing Red Hand does NOT mean (run like hell across the street), maybe that will make a difference. I’m constantly STUNNED how many peds DO NOT LOOK at the CARS or THEIR traffic signals, as well as the walk/don’t walk signs.
and,yes..I have plenty of Rants against bicyclist that think they’re above traffic laws as well.
December 29, 2007 at 3:19 am #613333In reply to: Scissor sharpener
ElliottParticipantI would not recommend QFC for sharpening. They have a machine they will pull your knives through, it is nothing special. I saw an ad at the West Seattle nursery – at the checkout counter – that advertised sharpening services. Failing that, I’d ask the local groomer shops, or your hair person.

December 29, 2007 at 2:40 am #613314In reply to: Gyms and/or Personal Trainers
proudmaryMemberAs far as I know there are 3 gyms: Allstar, YMCA and 24 hour fitness. Where you are located may influence which one is best for you: Allstar and the Y are further north, while 24Hr is in the south part of west Seattle.
I researched this a year ago, and I think that the Y and Allstar are both great. I went with Allstar, just felt better there and it cost less. I love it, particularly all the classes.
December 29, 2007 at 2:38 am #613356In reply to: Junk Removal?
GenHillOneParticipantWe really liked 1-800-JUNK. On time, on bid; they even moved some furniture when we still had room in the truck. Guys quietly (unofficially?) admitted that they did go through the load to find usable items before taking it to the dump. Not sure where those things ended up, so if that bothers you, maybe not a good fit. We had taken most of what we thought was usable to a charity, but if some of what we thought was “junk” stayed out of the landfill, more power to ’em.
December 29, 2007 at 2:29 am #613303In reply to: Forums – love ’em, hate ’em, or “meh”?
GenHillOneParticipantLike ’em! Took me a few to figure out that I can separate RRR and Open Discussion topics but that makes it easier to navigate. The big combined list is overwhelming to me otherwise so I like that option.
