In reply to: junction police activity???
JiggersMemberI know most of the officers here in WS and happy to see them making their rounds to the bars and not letting it become troubled spots. I only need to walk to any place I need to go and not worry about the police and driving home drunk. You deserve to get caught if you drive drunk.

JiggersMemberI’m not a fan of Tartare, but I hope they can serve up a Kobe style or Buffalo burger in the future. I’ll pay for that anyday over a Rocksport greasy burger yuk. Jak’s has the best burger around during happy hour.

AnonymousInactiveWalfredo, this is kind of a long article, but pretty convincing that Webb would be a bad choice for VP. What do you think of it?

AnonymousInactivebarmargia, I didn’t split up my comment very well. I combined responses. I don’t feel understood by you, but I also don’t think you’re being hostile. I added an edit to flip Vincent sh.t about manning up and that made it seem like the whole first paragraph was to you. I am sorry.

barmargiaMemberJT, I’m sorry if you think pointing something out is “hostility” on my part, and thanks for the snotty “you sure have put me in my place” comment, I’m guessing that when you wanted to rant you just wanted people to agree with you. I didn’t yell at you, I didn’t call you names, I just posted my observation, but I guess that I’m being hostile because I didn’t jump on your side.
I apologize for not noting the date of the original post

AnonymousInactivebarmar, making a sign was a joke. At least on my part, can’t speak for Ken. And the original *rant* was over a month ago. Animal control and the parks department have been responding and for a few weeks it was really nice. Now people have gone back to their old habits. It’s different dogs every day. The two days a month apart happened to be black dog day. It was a coincidence. Again, not understanding the hostility about ranting on a rant page, but you sure have put me in my place.
And Vincent, I’ll work on that manning up thing, but it’s a little late in life for me to get a sex change. You’ll have to be content with yelling at a girl for now.

flowerpetalMemberThe devilish little imp that sits on my left shoulder wanted me to suggest the Alki Cafe just to see the forum go “kaboom” again.
But the more tempered side of me says that I can’t wait for the Charlestowne Cafe to open its doors. The breakfasts there were just like mom’s!

barmargiaMemberI don’t think Celtic Swell does breakfast anymore, it’s been awhile since I was there, but I vaguely remember them mentioning they were not going to be serving breakfast. I concur with the Blackbird, Circa and Luna Park suggestions.

vincentMemberAFTER WORK, BY THE SWINGS, AND IF YOU TELL MOM, YOUR OUT OF THE CLUB FOREVER.
Serious dude, its one thing to rant about something like husky deli not being there for a late ice cream craving, or spd camping out on four hour breaks during the day. But about ONE SPECIFIC dude thats obviously doesn’t use the WSB? Call the waaaaabuluence to help you out.
Man up a bit and figure it out. Or change your name to lattemom.

barmargiaMemberI didn’t say you should just chill, I was just pointing out where you are just here ranting, and yes to everyone who pointed out this is a ranting forum, I know that, I’m just saying maybe if this is really a problem you should call animal control instead of JUST ranting about it. Nowhere did you indicate you called animal control, all you said was that you would help in making a sign and that you didn’t know how to get through to these people. You see them, evidently all the time, take a picture, email it to AC start a record of the situation. Unless you want to just let it keep going on.
May 27, 2008 at 10:35 pm #622241In reply to: RANT: Highpoint dog owners
AnonymousInactiveThanks Vincent, that would be swell. And I promise to never rant in the RANT section again. By the way, I said I would chill and let animal control take care of the report. What part of that bothers you so much? I wish you would just come over and tell me to my face instead of ranting about it on the internet.

villagegreenMemberHow about comedians? I just got back from the Sasquatch music festival and the comedy tent had huge lines all the time. The same happens at Bumbershoot – you can’t even get in to most events without standing in line for an hour.
Seattle is also desparately in need of more comedy venues. It’s getting to be known as a comedy town (many famous people purposely come here to try out new material), but there aren’t a lot of stand up venues. Comedy events such as ‘Laff-Hole!’ are even turning to traditionally music-only venues such as Chop Suey to fill the void. I think having a venue in West Seattle would draw people from all over the city.

May 27, 2008 at 8:27 pm #625228In reply to: WASL/School Standards
gambaruParticipantWhen I entered the teaching profession I was told this story and I have always kept it in my mind while teaching, “A group of teachers gathered in the auditorium for their annual pre-school year kick off motivational speech. The key note was a business man who was talking about setting goals and developing action plans to systematically achieve your goals and standards. At one point a teacher raised her hand and asked, “You seem to be very successful in your field. If you don’t mind me asking, what was your business?”
The speaker replied, “We processed blue berries for various foods which included them as ingredients.” The teacher continued, “Well, what did you do when you received a shipment of sub-par blueberries?” “Well, I would send them back to my supplier and raise hell.” In a soft voice the teacher asked, “Well, what am I supposed to do with my blue berries?”
Education is a very complex and unfortunately politically influenced issue. Unfortunately for our children, educators are typically not the ones who are making educational decisions for their students and are often blamed for the pitfalls in our educational system.
Ask ANY teacher what they think of standardized testing, and almost universally, you will open a door to a tirade about how inappropriate they are for our students. Simply put, STANDARDIZED TESTS ARE INAPPROPRIATE BECAUSE OUR CHILDREN ARE NOT STANDARDIZED HUMAN BEINGS. Don’t get me wrong, educators can utilize the over all data to pinpoint gaps in their curriculum and make changes in that way. However, educators do not need a standardized test to identify learning issues and disabilities in individual students.
Caduceus, I’m very glad for you that you have been very successful academically and have plans to go to college. However, not everyone is in the same boat as you are and simply increasing the difficulty of the WASL will not fix the problem you are seeing in your peers. The focus on standardized testing is a result on federally mandated No Child Left Behind. Most likely, there will not be a change until there is an administration change and education is made a priority.
changingtimes- so many factors play into why schools are different. Home support, demographics, funding, and quality instruction all affect a school. All we can do as teachers, is meet our students where they are when they come to us and take them as far as they can go in the short time we have them in our care.
Our education system is a Pandora’s Box of issues that will not be resolved by a quick fix. It will take a lot of nation and state-wide change and funding that will not offer a measurable monetary return…
Best of luck, Caduceus.
