First let me say that I’m sorry for what happened to your dog. That away to have to watch and the pain and suffering that you must both be feeling is terrible.

Here’s the hard part: that your dog was off leash really makes it your fault though the Akita breaking free of its leash may be the only mitigation you could expect.

You pull some very nasty rhetorical tricks in your post. You point out the history and roots of the breed and that while your dog has never been in a dog fight you imply that this one surely has. The fact it that your dog certainly approached another leashed dog. Your dog probably ran at it as dogs are wont to do. This would elicit a defensive response.

I have my own biases. I own two pit bulls. They are big chickens despite their reputation. While the breed is responsible for the most maulings in the last 20 years that isn’t indicative of the majority of the members of the breeds that make up the collection of dogs considered pit bulls. In fact, Labs are the most frequent biters.

Breeds cannot be outright banned in WA. Municipality’s must provide a route around said restrictions that is reasonable for individual dogs. It’s possible that this dog would’ve been able to do so if another dog hadn’t run at it.

I’m sure my post will be unpopular since I’m not displaying any hand wringing or howling for blood, as is popular these days. Feel free to pile on.

I think you’re projecting your politics onto kids. While I agree that outdoor masking is not necessary in many circumstances, it doesn’t appear that kids regard it as the onerous burden that you do. Play often involves fairly personal contact that is quite different from ordinary distanced walking, and most kids are not yet vaccinated. I see kids walking around my neighborhood fully masked all the time. They seem to embrace it, and it appears compliance is higher among kids than adults. Is it so terrible that we have an up-and-coming generation that takes responsibility for others seriously? Sounds like a lot of adults could learn from them.

A while back I was in Riteaid. The two ladies in front yelled “he is back and grabbing liquor bottles”. Being 6foot two and big, I stood in his way blocking his exit. He pulled out a long knife and said, let me through. I let him through. I wished I knew martial arts, I would have liked to take done the punk. But that is why employees just let them go. It could of been a gun.

    An opportunity from Highline soccer:
We have a serious shortage of referees this season, so we want to build our referee pool to help out.

The way this works is that once you become a certified referee, you can self-assign to games that work with your schedule. This is a great job for young and old alike – you can make $20 to center a U8 game, all the way up to $62 for a U19 game, with options to be an AR (sideline ref) for between $17 and $38 per game. You can do multiple games a day, so you can pay off the clinic fee pretty quickly. And if you ref 10 games for HSA Select, you can get reimbursed for the clinic.

You can find clinics at the WA State Referee Clinics site, and choose the first option in the drop down (Entry). The closest clinics are down at the Tukwila Community Center from 9am-12:30pm on 11/13 and 12/4.

However, there is a new process to register for the clinics so please log onto the WASRC website above and click on ‘How to Become a Referee’ to the right and follow the instructions.

Once you register and pay, you must complete all 23 referee modules. Once you complete the modules, then you choose a clinic to attend. You cannot choose a clinic to attend until after you register and complete the modules.

Please help out by becoming a referee – it’s a great way to spend a Saturday or Sunday, being around the beautiful game!

I’m in the same camp as those who object to this badly written law. I am one of those who is too close to retirement to ever benefit from the money I will be required to pay in for the remaining years I work. I recognize the value of having long term care insurance but at this time, cannot purchase an individual policy as all insurers have suspended the sale of these policies in the state of Washington. So I cannot legally opt out of this payroll deduction as I will not be able to buy a policy before the deadlines. This is also thanks to this badly written law where you only have to show proof you have insurance, there is no requirement you maintain that policy. So once you prove to the state you have it and are exempted, you can cancel the policy.
For those who pay in, at 10 years you’re vested and you can make claims for care with a lifetime maximum of $36,500. Many of the people I know in long term care will tell you that is a pittance compared to the cost of their care. And you can bet those costs are only going to go up in the course of the next ten years.
I wish I knew if there was a lawsuit to stop the implementation of this law. I’d be glad to sign on to it. Meanwhile, I get to just kiss my hard earned money good bye as I will never see it again. I’d be better off taking that payroll deduction and investing it myself. At least then I’d actually have a nest egg which I could use for long term care expenses and I’d also earn the interest on my money.

I am so angry about this deduction. I am 58 and will be retiring in less than 10 years, and when I retire I am probably leaving Washington, so I will never see a dime of this benefit. I also can’t opt out because I am oxygen dependent, which means I do not qualify for any private long-term care coverage (believe me, I’ve tried, and long before this plan came up). So I have no way of opting out, and yet they are going to take my money even though I’ll never use it. I truly believe that anyone 5-10 years from retirement should be eligible to opt out without private coverage, but they’ll never do that since they need people like me to pay into it so they can pay out for everyone else.

mom2boys, you stated the State needs help with financial burdens due to medicaid so are you saying the State mis-ran their finances or the “people” have mis-used the State?
All employed people pay into this Trust Fund to have their medicare once they retire so this WA Care Fund is just another way of the Feds getting even more money from the working people?
    Definition of:
    Medicare
Medicare is an insurance program. Medical bills are paid from trust funds which those covered have paid into. It serves people over 65 primarily, whatever their income; and serves younger disabled people and dialysis patients. Patients pay part of costs through deductibles for hospital and other costs. Small monthly premiums are required for non-hospital coverage. Medicare is a federal program. It is basically the same everywhere in the United States and is run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, an agency of the federal government.

    Medicaid
Medicaid is an assistance program. It serves low-income people of every age. Patients usually pay no part of costs for covered medical expenses. A small co-payment is sometimes required. Medicaid is a federal-state program. It varies from state to state. It is run by state and local governments within federal guidelines.

I have no knowledge of how self employed people fit into this, whether they are required to sign up or not. For people who will be subject to this tax, the only ‘opt-out’ route is by having your own long term care insurance and providing proof. If you do some Google searching you should be able to find more information and contact info.

This group is for ladies in their 30s (plus or minus a few years) looking for authentic friendships with some really cool yet nerdy women. Some of us may be new to town, or maybe we’re just realizing we need some more awesome, genuine friendships in our lives. You might be more inclined to enjoy some wine and a good book rather than go out. You might enjoy deep conversation over tea more than a night at a dance club. You might prefer to have 5 close friends rather than 20 acquaintances. If this sounds like you, you might have hit the nerdy friendship jackpot!

If you have questions, please refer to meetup and ask an organizer. We regularly have West Seattle meetups, and have folks from West Seattle who often look for carpool options. Thanks!
