In reply to: Why isn't he in jail?
Jd seattleParticipantJanS – “will a law do any good?” – I’m genuinely not asking this to be sarcastic but arnt laws what you are proposing to fix gun violence? Maybe I’m misunderstanding you? Anyway, I think we need to define what safely and responsibly storing a weapon means and how to accomplish it. Once we have done that, we put penalties in place If your gun is used in an event such as the Marysville highschool shooting. But we also need to articulate the difference of safe storage from children/invited guests vs thieves because those are two different things.
We then need to draw the line where you are no longer responsible for your weapon when stolen. We need to store them safely but we all can’t have bank vaults in our home.
Laws won’t stop the problem, but you and JoB have continually talked about making the gun owners accountable. If prison time and the thought of losing your child or causing others children’s deaths doesn’t do that there is nothing left to do.
I am all for teaching kids gun saftey, proper handling and letting them participate in hunting. But I agree with you that they should not have access to them without a parents supervision.
I understand the first part of your post now. I don’t think there is a way to enforce conformity to the law without violation of other rights. Only make the consequences harsh enough for any person with half a brain fear them. This was the reason I was asking that question in the other thread about how much could laws actually do before the only thing left is to take guns away (not trying to stir up that debate again).

JanSParticipantMy first question…will a law do any good, really? People will do what they will do behind closed doors. It’s not like we have safe gun storage police invading homes.I think that’s a hard part of it. How would it be enforced? For all I know, this 14 yo kid’s dad thought things were all neat and tidy, and things were locked up. Teenagers, especially, can be wily when they want something. Knowing that his family often hunted, etc., I’m guessing that dad had told him where things were. The 14yo had been trained to use firearms by the family, and they probably never suspected that something like this would happen. I think that’s why I say..don’t tell the kids where they are.
I’d love to hear some of your ideas, Jd.
October 26, 2014 at 10:18 pm #815440In reply to: Why isn't he in jail?
Jd seattleParticipantJanS – there is no law that directly addresses safe storage. That is what I am proposing having a discussion about. I am open to legislation, if we can calmly discuss it and not get hung up on our differences in the larger issue of gun rights themselves.
JoB – I will answer your questions if you agree to stop the accusational tone and hear me out. I am truly trying to have a conversation here without the my way or the highway approach. JanS asked “JoB, I totally agree. Where are the Jd’s of the world coming down hard at such irresponsible behavior” well, here I am. Will you hear me out?
October 26, 2014 at 9:34 pm #815434In reply to: Why isn't he in jail?
JanSParticipantsafe gun storage. …hmm…wouldn’t that be common sense? Lock it up, away from the kids. They don’t need to know where you keep them. Parents are supposed to be in control of this stuff. Both sides? What sides? Lock ’em up, and don’t tell the kids. What other side is there?
http://www.kingcounty.gov/healthservices/health/data/GunViolence/status.aspx
notice..it says this for Child Access Provisions:
NO. Washington does not have specific child access provisions, though law does not permit knowing transfer to someone believed to be legally unable to possess a gun. CAP laws regulate by requiring safe storage, training/education, etc.
NO criminal liability explicit in law for negligence/reckless endangerment where poor storage allows child access.
I think this needs to change…how about you, Jd? or anyone, really :)
October 26, 2014 at 7:11 pm #815432In reply to: Why isn't he in jail?
JanSParticipantJoB, I totally agree. Where are the Jd’s of the world coming down hard at such irresponsible behavior, instead of simply yelling about “my rights, my rights”…I just shake my head. When this happened on Friday, my first thought was how did a 14 yo acquire a handgun. If it wasn’t from the home, which obviously it was now, how does that happen? Yes, you can share your guns with your kids while hunting..but first you need to teach them respect and responsibility for those guns, and then you need to lock ’em up, and don’t tell the kids where they are.
October 26, 2014 at 5:43 pm #815430In reply to: Why isn't he in jail?
JTBParticipantJoB. What I was referring to is the federal reg. barring minors from purchasing and possessing handguns. Yes, I was being sarcastic about the NRA taking a responsible stance on this matter. But I think you are right that there should be more consequential enforcement when adults leave handguns unsecured and children gain access to them.
October 26, 2014 at 4:42 pm #815429In reply to: Why isn't he in jail?
seaopgalParticipantSame reason the Marysville police officer isn’t in jail after he left his loaded handgun in his minivan and one of his children shot and killed the other. (He was charged with 2nd degree manslaughter, acquitted (hung jury), fired, appealed, and was reinstated. Who knows, he was probably at the high school on Friday….) When it comes to guns we are collectively insane.
October 26, 2014 at 2:55 pm #815425In reply to: Why isn't he in jail?
kayoParticipantYes. Agree. This was a 14 year old boy – a child with no impulse control. If the dad’s gun had only been locked up…. The kid had his own rifle, but that would’ve been much more difficult for him to sneak into school. Our school has been in shelter in place 3x this year due to safety incidents including gunshots and as a parent, I am so scared and fed up. I am starting to feel like all schools need metal detectors, security guards, and security doors that slam to the ground with the pushing of a panic button. I can’t believe I feel this way about a freaking elementary school, but I do. I can’t imagine anything like this happening when I was a kid in the 80s. It is out of control. I wept a lot of tears of both anger and sadness when this happened on Friday. When will enough be enough? Someone who is pro-gun please tell me the answer to this question. I’ve had it.

HMC RichParticipantSince my wife is from England, she is quite critical of bad British accents and notices Brits playing American roles. I have had some success learning some of the differences but only a bit. I was shocked how good Andrew Lincoln is in the Walking Dead. I had forgotten about his Love Actually role. I thought Hugh Laurie was one of the best in HOUSE. Invictus was a spectacularly good movie BTW. Loved it. I think Americans can tell the difference a bit between a Liverpool and some London accents but the rest they would not be able to tell. Kind of like the difference between a Texan and a Tennessee native. Close but different.

miwsParticipantThanks for the info, bertha.
Admittedly, my concern is a little “paranoia” on my part, with a dose of Murphy’s Law, as I worry that my sig might not match, or some other one in a million glitch, and that by the time I find out, the only way to resolve it would be to rush somewhere in person, if it’s too close to Election Day. I usually put down my e-mail addy, as the point of contact should there be an issue, but then worry that my lower-case writing might not be the most clear, as for decades, I have printed in all caps, when writing longhand.
Usually, even though I may not get the Ballot filled out and sent back in within a day or two after receiving it, I generally get it in in time, with a decent cushion of time before E-Day. Although on this last Primary, I think, I may have forgotten to send it in until a week or less before E-Day.
I’ve heard stories about how closely scrutinized the sigs are, and since I Registered to Vote 38 years ago, and know my sig has changed (rather drastically, I believe) since then, I worry about it. Although I went into Elections, Downtown, two years ago to update my info, (was in Transitional Housing in Pioneer Square at the time), I don’t recall if I signed anything then that would have provided and up to date sig.
But yeah, very impressed this time and last, with how quick everything was verified. I’ve had it happen a few times, where I’ll check a couple days or so after mailing the Ballot in, and the Site will state that the Ballot was received, and is awaiting Sig Verification, then when I check again in the next day or so, it will confirm Sig Verified.

seaopgalParticipantBallots were mailed 10/14. According to http://www.kingcounty.gov/elections/news/2014/October/14-general-election-ballots.aspx:
“Voters who don’t receive a ballot by Oct. 20 or who have questions should call King County Elections at 206-296-VOTE (8683).”

Please consider the many beautiful items in the online Lolita’s Gift Holiday Auction, benefiting our endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales and wild Chinook Salmon. Original artwork, jewelry, unique experiences, in all price ranges … you can even buy raffle tickets on an autographed Rick Springfield guitar. (Should you be so inclined!)
The auction runs through November 7, and bidding is easy! (Too easy, in my experience … ) https://www.biddingforgood.com/auction/auctionhome.action?auctionId=219759473
Although sponsored by Orca Network, auction proceeds will benefit distribution of the new documentary Fragile Waters, which tells the story of these two iconic northwest species and what we must do to save them. Fragile Waters will have its world premiere at the Friday Harbor Film Festival on November 7.

in forum Open DiscussionmiwsParticipantJust an Non-Partisan ;-) reminder that after you mail in your Ballot, to track it:
https://info.kingcounty.gov/elections/ballottracker.aspx
I just checked the status of mine, and it was received and signature verified!
I have to say that I’m quite impressed with KC Elections, and the Ballot Tracker System.
I mailed my Ballot in, two days ago, on Thursday from a USPS dropbox in White Center, and as I was about to check on it just now, realized that I had missed that day’s pick-up at that box.
So, presumably, they didn’t receive it until this morning, or perhaps late yesterday, if there is some special expediting for them.
It always sets my mind at ease, to find out that everything is copasetic, as I always fear some little glitch, like signature not being an absolute, totally non-deviating match, from what they have on File.

JoBParticipantJd
the best way to offer our support is to effectively put our guns under lock and key and that doesn’t happen without laws like i594.
i don’t want to support yet another set of devastated parents.. which by the way includes the parents of the shooter… after the fact. I want to put an end to this.
75 school shootings since Sandy Hook…
and that doesn’t even count what happens in our own homes.
will i594 alone put an end to school shootings? No, it won’t.
But it will begin to build a consensus that owning a firearm is a serious responsibility .. not just a right to be so easily abused.
the consequences of the trumped up national fear that someone is going to take guns away from responsible owners if they allow even one toe-hold into legal regulation are lethal.
to me it really is that simple.

annaeileenParticipantCharlie Hunnman is a Brit and plays a California biker on Sons of Anarchy. I think he is one of the best looking men on TV but he hasn’t quite mastered the American accent. Last week was painfully obvious. From my previous post, Justin Chambers on The Wedding Planner, bad movie, bad accent. yes to Idris Elba! Excellent actor.

Jd seattleParticipantJanS and JoB – thank you for the spirited debate. I feel quite comfortable resting my case now. I will admit I learned something new. Not from what you posted, but if it wasn’t for you JoB I wouldn’t have gone back and re examined that portion about spouses and found it for myself. Now, I urge you for later debates to focus on what a person is saying or asking. Not what you think they saying or asking. I understand we are on complete opposite sides of the spectrum on this subject, but I laid out a very simple task. I asked you to prove a one sentence statement you made. Although you trivialize its impact, if my argument is correct it has a huge impact on gun owners. But instead of doing so you continually ignored what was being said over and over again, yet put in so much work on something that was never said. Anyway, I’ll let you have as many last words as you like. The only other thing I can say is, hey, it’s Friday. Let’s all have a great weekend.

Agree on Damian Lewis. I was a bit stunned to find out he wasn’t American when I first watched Band of Brothers. Quite good.

JanSParticipantthis is ridiculous…Jd, you are interpreting something that isn’t there. That’s your prerogative. But it’s still not true. Of course, you will argue until you’re blue in the face. And…stick to the OP post and I-594. Let’s neither of us get personal. Yes, there are people on this OPEN forum that wish I and JoB would simply disappear into thin air. It’s a public open forum, and we have every right to express our opinions on here. We’ve even been accused of “influencing” the editor of this forum and main page, too. How insulting to them. After I posted that last night, the first thing I said to myself was “he’ll say it’s not true, and argue about it”. It certainly doesn’t fit your position, does it? So you just believe what you want to believe. No one will change your mind. But..all of this is just your opinion…,it is not fact, as being stated in I-594. It is what you *think* will happen. It’s a scare tactic, and, yes, it’s BS. The definition of transfer in I-594 is basically saying the same thing as the official Fed. definition. Enough, already..you will always be right, and those who disagree will always be wrong. Now tell me that isn’t true, because you were caught being wrong once.
I Miss Jess, I stated earlier, the wait period now is 5 days, the wait period under I-594 is UP TO 10 days (so it may not always be exactly 10 days). The “up to” 60 day wait is only if the person applying has lived in this state for less than 90 days, i.e., a new resident. It’s to keep out of state ne’er do well persons from quickly acquiring a firearm. Nowhere does it say that the new wait time for everyone is 10-60 days.

And if anyone ever wants to know exactly what squeezing an entire relationship out of an electric guitar sounds like – and I mean the highs, the lows, the fights, the breakup and the closure – listen to Jeff Beck’s “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers”. It was written by Stevie Wonder and it’s an instrumental. The guitar doesn’t tell the story, it lives the story. And it pulverizes me, every time.

JoBParticipantJd..
you never said anything about hunting?
wasn’t that story that featured the spouse you couldn’t loan your gun to while hunting on your uncle’s land about hunting?
because i took that literally. I thought we were talking about hunting…
To be clear… You and your spouse and your uncle or your bud or.. can share your guns while hunting legally on your uncle’s land … assuming of course that it is hunting season and is legal to hunt there and you all have the proper hunting licenses and your uncle or whoever you loan your gun to could pass a background check.
If you loan your gun to your kid who has not yet turned 18 though.. you will have to directly supervise them… whether hunting or not.
that’s what the text of i594 says.
so are you now trying to tell me that you think that all gun owners should be able to sidestep Universal Background checks by being able to loan any firearm to anyone?
surely you aren’t saying that? are you?
because that would pretty much wipe owner accountability out of the equation …
i lent him/her my gun officer. honest. they just asked to borrow the gun and i didn’t even think to ask what they were going to do with it or if they could pass a background check…
isn’t that pretty much what we have going on now?
a whole lot of don’t ask don’t tell when it comes to informal private firearm sales/gifts/loans?
how does that square with Universal Background Checks?
or aren’t we talking about that any more either?
now i really do have to get to the vet to have stitches taken out of one pup’s leg. .. then after i go grocery shopping and am back home supervising.. i can take the cone of shame donuts off my dogs..
i can’t tell you how much better that will make all of us feel.
