I live on a short and much-walked street near the ferry. It has a slight slope and cars come down it WAAAAY too fast quite frequently. When I asked about installing speed humps, I was told there was a several step process that included installing speed measuring traps and waiting to gather data before any possible installation could occur – short of an actual incident, which we haven’t had to my knowledge.

Is that still the protocol? It sounded like a year or two before anything could get through the process?

Are you guys also against golf courses in city parks? Skate parks? Soccer fields?

IMO mountain bike trails make far more sense than these other activities and have far less environmental impact.

JoB – to answer your question – I have not been walking and overtaken by mountain bikes. I walk on walking trails and bike on biking trails. If I was to see a mountain biker on a trail that prohibits biking I would let the biker know.

Anonyme – One could easily say “anyone who can afford golf should drive to Issaquah” or “anyone who can afford soccer lessons should drive to Issaquah.” I think we should offer activities in our parks that people enjoy without having to drive 20 miles. Just my opinion and everyone is welcome to their own.

I Wonder – if you think a ski hill would be a good addition to a park then put up a proposal and help make it happen! That’s what the mountain bikers are doing.

Parks are for enjoyment and recreation. Golf, skateboarding, biking, soccer, kayaking, walking, frisbee, playgrounds, barbeques, etc, etc. These are all great activities and I’m delighted we’re using our parks.

Can we request the holes on California by Genesee and Dakota be filled where the new gas lines were installed recently? Those are as bad a pot holes with the terrible patch job they did.

Welp, that completely answers my question; thanks miws! So, mid-July. It looks like the turf is pretty established to me, but I’m no turf expert, so I’ll look forward to the grand opening next month.

you’ve clearly never experienced the joy of leaving the Wells Fargo drive through only to be stuck waiting for multiple buses, all blocking the exit. Stuff happens. I’d be way more worried about buses blocking intersections (like they do frequently in Morgan Junction) rather than driveways.

I would guess that anyone who can afford mountain bikes for each and every family member could also afford to drive to Issaquah.

Well, placing a major stop that impacts as stated:

“with the frequency of RR-C and that turn it has to make from Cal to Faunt and then try to stop at the Zeek’s zone while getting its rear end out…”

then realizing they might need to install a drop-off zone up the road to alleviate a bit of the mess caused by the first ill-placed stop, may seem like the result of fine working brains to you, but we can agree to disagree. Won’t even go into the snarl created close the same corner by the bump-out stop on Calif. north of the intersection. Perhaps those brilliant brains will decide to put a stop in front of Thriftway to alleviate that bunching, so even more people can run across the intersection in both directions against the lights and in gridlocked traffic to try and catch their buses.

wake, if you haven’t done so already, you might want to drop a quick line to TR, to let her know this backstory. There was an article and pic of the three geese a couple weeks or so ago.

I would guess that WSB might post a quick update, when time permits.

I actually Googled the wracking/racking thing, because although I was mostly sure the “w” spelling was correct, wasn’t 100% sure.

Took a quick look at one result, and it seemed to say that either one was acceptable.

MIWS – I think your theory about bunching is correct, with the frequency of RR-C and that turn it has to make from Cal to Faunt and then try to stop at the Zeek’s zone while getting its rear end out of traffic. Since RR-C also goes to the ferry dock, it makes sense that the other zone is drop-off only.

The other reason the mystery zone is located where it is is to make sure WB vehicles rounding the curve at 45 mph to make a ferry have plenty of time to see the bus before they hit it.

TanDL – the brains at Metro work fine; they just can’t make everyone happy, given the complexity of the operating environment.

p.s. I’ve been ‘racking’ my brain instead of ‘wracking’ it; that may explain a few things…

Zook & Oleson Gardening estan contratando maintenance gardeners.

Experience as a landscaper is not necessary, we can train – but you must speak Spanish. (English is nice but not required.)

Pay starts at $11.50/hr, with prompt raises for demonstrated experience. The position is full time – well, more than full time, really, as we are very busy and generally work 10 hour days. If you need the day off work, that’s usually okay, but if you come in you’ll need to stay until we’re done, usually about 6pm.

We start in West Seattle at 7:30am. You will need to bring your lunch already packed. We drive company trucks to the clients, so your own vehicle or drivers license is not required. The work will initially include the basic tools of lawn care (mowers, edgers and blowers) but would eventually evolve into plant care, container work and fine pruning.

After 90 days, you accrue 6 paid sick days a year, per Seattle city law. All federal holidays except Columbus Day are paid days off (usually that’s 9 a year.) Overtime is paid at time and half, and we are always in overtime. (So a 50 hour work week is normal, but pays 55 hours.) The work is very physical and you must be able to lift 50 lbs.

We work year round with no layoffs. We don’t work Saturdays or Sundays. We’re not looking for a part timer or someone just for the summer – ideally you will dive in and be part of our close-knit crew, every day, for years to come.

We have been around 15 years. We love to work where we live (in West Seattle) but you will also get see some of the great estates of Capitol Hill, Hunts Point, and Medina. We have great employees and wonderful clients, and very little turnover in either. Please call Ben at (206) 595.2793 to discuss, or email ben@zaogardening.com.

    Hasta hablamos, muchas gracias!

What is the process for requesting speed bumps along this very busy, and sometimes dangerous, street because of the speeding cars. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks for the recommendations. I tried to give Champion my business more than a year ago and they never came to pick up my lawn mower even though they claimed to have time to look at it the same day as my inquiry. I waited 3 or 4 days and they never showed.

For those who are opposed to mountain bike trails in Seattle Parks, I highly, highly suggest you visit a park that allows biking in a nearby area and judge for yourself. I’ve been to several. These parks are clean, well cared for, safe, and full of children and families recreating.

    Here are a couple samples:

    http://www.kingcounty.gov/recreation/parks/trails/backcountry/grandridge.aspx

    http://www.kingcounty.gov/recreation/parks/trails/backcountry/bigfinn.aspx

Please understand that many children and families in Seattle simply do not have the time and money to drive to Issaquah in a car to enjoy these opportunities. Seattle would be a much better city in my opinion if families had access to local mountain biking trails within a reasonable distance of their house.

If you have the chance to check out one of these parks please report back and let me know your thoughts.

I ended up using Rob’s Sharpening Service in Burien, SW 122nd and 1st Ave. Has an in home shop and handles many small engine projects. He did a good job, and quick turn around. At least its somewhat local.

I wrote to the mayor and will contact the park commissioners. Nothing wrong with bicycles; we just don’t want wooded pathways taken over by speeding bikes. Anonyme put it more eloquently! Remember, Mr. Christopher Williams, who is now Deputy Superintendent, was one of the backers of the Go Ape zipline. So I don’t exactly have faith in him protecting our parks.

metrognome, the stop is for 116/118/119. There’s a sign there, and I’m pretty sure it has those route numbers on it.

My perspective though, when seeing it, is a quick glance from onboard a 128 just after the turn off of NB 42nd, and 99% the time I’m getting ready to get off at the Cal/Faunt stop to go to Thriftway, so may info may not be totally accurate. ;-)

For some time now, the forums have not been searchable. This question has been asked many times since 2007, and the clear winner is West Seattle Fence. Great company to work with.

Hello all – need to have an old fence replaced and looking for recommendations. Simple home, nothing high-end required but at the risk of stating the obvious, would like good value, a long lasting fence, and quality work. The only recommendations I found on the blog were from 2007. Any recent tips/referrals are most appreciated!

    Thank you!

If you want quality products (Griot’s Garage products or better) and someplace that has an evident wash water recycling/disposal system:

    – Mr. Detail, Downtown Seattle

    – Park Place Auto Salon, Bellevue (best value to price, IMHO with online booking)

    – NorthWest Auto Salon, Lynnwood (the best detailer in the region).

My personal experience with Rico’s was not stellar. The car wash area is a dumpy shed in the back accessed through an alleyway (I was worried for my low slung car). It didn’t look like the water and wash chemicals were going anywhere useful except into the ground/gravel. They missed several spots and left a ton of swirls. The quality of wash cloths being used were pretty bad too instead of soft microfiber.

I can’t wait for a high(er) quality detail shop to startup someplace in West Seattle. I’ve heard good things about Accutint in SoDo but haven’t gone there yet.
