And as I say to people with interesting stories to tell, we tell ’em in the news section here on WSB as well – since reporting here is our fulltime gig. If you have pictures, documents, names, verification the inspector got fired, feel free to contact us in e-mail:

Could you please post a link to the law stating that it is illegal to throw yard trimmings over your hill?

I grew up on a hill in West Seattle, and we always dumped our grass clippings over.

    Thanks!

RainyDay, go for it. Even if you do backslide now and then, only eating red meat now and then is better for you and the environment than eating it all the time. It’s cheaper, too. I try to eat vegetarian, but backslide to turkey, chicken or fish now and then. I also try to avoid anything that’s cooked alive, like clams or lobster.

We talk. We all talk and take each other seriously. Admit we have biases and prejudices. That’s where we start.

We re-read history…if’n you are serious, read Studs Turkel, and Linda Stout…they all address class. Read Cornel West, Angela Davis, Sherman Alexie, Sandra Cisneros…they have a lot to say about racism. Ronald Takaki and Howard Zinn re-examine American history…go to powwows and listen to the honor songs, go to the various festivals…White Center has a lot of them.

Oh, I have a reading list for everything. So many books, so many people to listen and learn from…so little time.

BTW, I don’t like football either. But I do like beer. And if you come to the pub, we’ll talk more.

Oh, I almost forgot one that IS in West Seattle- Andrew’s Rainbow House.

Background: The story goes that Andrew told his father he was gay and that his father couldn’t handle it and killed Andrew and himself. The next morning the house was found painted in rainbow colors in the front, and the back in swirls and colors. There are also colored tiles on the roof and the letter “A” in gray tiles on the roof. Apparently the house has been repainted, but the following day it is always back to rainbow colors. The house was supposedly featured on “Unsolved Mysteries”. There also has been a report of Andrew’s ghost being seen in digital pictures.

    Hey –

I lived on QA 1/2 block away from where the federal prosecutor was murdered in his study. I was also there when the hatchet murder happened on the other side of the Hill.

Other than that, not too much happened up there. Very quiet in those days.

Eeek! That’s creepy stuff, wsblover! I used to live in an apartment building in Leschi that was once home to Mia Zapata’s murderer. It had the freakiest boiler room I’ve ever been in and just an eerie vibe. There were also tales of a woman that was killed at a party there, removed in a rug by boat. I don’t recall any details from that one other than the guy supposedly fled the country.

As well as being against the law(!) it seems irresponsible for neighbors to dump yard clippings or to skeletonize madrona trees on this fragile hillside. And they know better. Having money seems to give them a sense of entitlement that rules don’t apply to them. When I reported one previous neighbor who had cleared trees on land not his, and the inspector agreed with me and wrote up a report, the inspector ended up getting fired. My repeated calls to have another inspector, were ignored. Money, unfortunately, trumps landslide prevention in Seattle.

JoB, that’s very cool news about Zippys/Full Tilt connection. I can’t wait to try the milkshakes YUM!

While you are in White Center, I also recommend the Taco Truck, Cafe Rozella and the Salvadorean Bakery. I’m also really looking forward to trying the new Brewery going into the Pacific Rim building.

You may have heard/read this already but White Center Glass and Upholstery is also working on a new art space and bistro called All About Art:

I was veggie for a while too and I really missed red meat. So instead of missing it and craving it and denying myself, I just started eating it again. I buy local, grass-fed, free range stuff. I do enough fighting against the ills of the world in other ways that I refuse to feel bad about eating red meat. But that’s just me. I’m totally supportive of veggies as long as they don’t try to proselytize to me all the time.

Oh, and Westseattledood, “crickets chirping” implies that you have made an argument to which no one has a comeback/ no one is jumping in to agree with your statement/ no one has an answer your question. Hence the only sound to be heard is crickets chirping.

    RainyDay1235..

been there done that.. i was even macrobiotic for a while..

    it didn’t work for me.

i actually need red meat to keep my little grey cells functioning.

i think i will just settle for making sure that the meat i consume was raised in a healthy respectful environment…

i think i am getting myself a steak to have tonight. hubby requested salad.. and as much as i like salad.. it doesn’t agree with my digestion:(

i am glad there are so many more protein choices available for those who make the effort to give up meat now…

i hope it works for you.

I have many vegetarian, vegan and (gasp!) raw friends, so it was inevitable. But, I also think it’s the right thing to do – for animals, my health AND the environment.

It doesn’t hurt that the face of baby cows eerily resemble my dog!

I’m just not ready to say goodbye to chicken and turkey yet – but hey, it’s a start!

    Who’s with me?? :)

Congratulations. You live on a designated arterial. At least according to google maps…

Your street IS the traffic calming device for the rest of the neighborhood.

It is also the only path down that ridge without a long switchback.

    Enjoy.

JT and Kayleigh, on that note: if it doesn’t work for you, that’s fine. It does for others. I could say that I *believe* modern medicine and herbs both work for me. I think “science” falls short, too…and is just as expensive, and has as much “smugism” to it, sadly enough. I’ve been treated dismissively by both populations. And there are a lot of medicines that are plant derived. So?

What is “tapping”? Sorry, if I am clueless.

JoB…I don’t think I was the one that said that about Bellevue…but I sure feel that way. I try to talk Aim into going anywhere but there…and I just did a presentation at Bellevue Community College and what some of the students of color and the LGBTQ students told me–well, it reinforces that feeling. :(

    TheHouse…

a house is not always the path to economic security.

over the past 17 years, hubby and i have owned 3 homes.

the first was a great investment.. and we made a decent profit… so we traded up.

then the economy tanked, programmers were struggling to find any job and we relocated to Minnesota for hubby’s work.

We didn’t lose all of our equity in that move.. but we did find ourselves in the uncomfortable place of having made huge investments in our home that we knew wouldn’t pay off financially in the short run.. and they didn’t.

We bought in Minnesota… and after getting a job offer back in the Northwest.. found ourselves selling in a down market.. just days after the bridge collapse to a couple working on the wrong side of the bridge. oops… that deal fell through… and the one that replaced it wasn’t as lucrative.

all in all, i suspect we broke roughly even.. but we also rehabbed three houses.

i like the process.. so it wasn’t so terrible for me.. but hubby doesn’t and he never got to live with the fruits of his labor… or to realize the profits they would have brought long term.

I am not so sure about this home ownership deal if you can rent reasonably.. which is something i hope to rectify for us…

but in spite of his lifetime record of loss in real estate (the home he owned prior to our marriage was one of those that wasn’t so profitable in the combination of a “housing correction” and divorce.)… hubby likes the the “certainty” of owning. he wants a place of his own.. so we will likely buy again.

we are lucky in love.. and hubby has the most incredible vacation weather luck i have ever seen… but real estate? not so lucky there.

who knows? there is always next time… yes????

i think a lot of people are aware that their animals are bored and lonely when they are off at work.. and they get more animals to keep one another company.. and sometimes that works.

i am lucky to be able to be home with mine.

I returned to the forum today after several days of internet deprivation and found discussions on race and class that inspired hope…

Yes, there were some strong opinions.. and more than a little intellectual (and not so intellectual) head-butting.. but there was also real conversation… something i might have missed had i been in the middle instead of reading the thread in it’s entirety.

I’ve got a real case of the warm and fuzzies, so i thought i would post this before delving into other threads…. that are sure to infuriate and spoil all this hopefulness i am feeling ;-)

i thought today was a good day to share hope.

kayleigh, I expressed many of your sentiments awhile back when *tapping therapy* was being discussed. Including the link to quackwatch. Got jumped all over for it. People who benefit from sugar pills (placebos), get very defensive. It is not a popular stance to challenge them.

I think I would have more respect for those who acknowledge that they *believe* they have benefited. As opposed to those who try to sell me the merits of said *sugar pill*. It’s still sugar, but if you feel better taking it, I’m happy for you.

Shibaguyz…I agree. But the answer is as complicated as the problem. Talking about it is a start…because we need to make it an apparent problem, instead of something unspoken, unacknowledged, but felt.

One thing that would work is to begin collective organizing, and work on addressing all “isms”…even if it is outside of our comfort zone.

There are some really models of organizations who “act locally” and affect globally. That’s what we need to do…but we also have to work and address our own internalized crap, and then work outwards. And sometimes, we’ll need to step back (as allies) and let that particular group being challenged step forward and speak. (Thus the need, sometimes, for a safe space.)

As for race, it is definitely an “imaginary concept” (to quote Angela Davis), but the societal concepts have a realtime impact on all of us…most of the “isms” are societal contructions…as was already pointed out by Shibaguyz.

You should also probably check out http://www.raincityguide.com , a local real estate blog where several real estate professionals regularly contribute (including Rhonda Porter, a West Seattle based mortgage broker and sponsor of WSB). Rhonda’s posts are always very informative about the current state of the mortgage market and Ardell (who has recently taken a very bearish turn in regards to the state of the market) is also always extremely helpful.

For illegal dumping of chemicals in storm drains call:

    (206) 684-7587

This is the specific number for Seattle Public Utilities for reporting storm drain contamination violations.

Check out a book called “Weird Washington.” I heard an interview on NPR yesterday with the author and found it to be fascinating! I’ve read about or heard most of the usual PNW heebie jeebie stories but he seemed to have a few I’d never heard of.

Also, I did an internet search of the book title and found the website for his co-author that has a lot of cool stuff on it.

Isn’t there a haunted Seattle tour?? Now THAT would be fun!!

My two cents is the fact that nobody ever mentions not really wanting to own a home. I have rented since leaving college and have loved the freedom. I have enjoyed making career decisions based on having an adventure instead of paying for a house. In 8 years in Seattle, I have lived in 7 locations and have had a variety of jobs in my career field.

Now after living in West Seattle for a bit, I really like it. As I approach my mid-30s and am in a stable job, I am starting to think about buying – mainly because I now am in a place where I want to stay.

However, I will say I am glad for the flexibility I have had while renting. My parents are in their 50s prefer renting and even my grandparents in their 80s have, by choice, only owned one home – and that was in the 1950s.

Owning a home, like other life decisions should be a choice. I think it is too bad it has become out of reach for so many and that others felt the pressure to buy when they probably should not have.

As for making my landlord rich – right now I love my landlords and if that is how they get rich – good for them! :) Honestly, every service anyone purchases makes someone else money. When I choose to buy, I will happily help my good friend who is a Realtor make some cash.
