JoBParticipantI returned to the forum today after several days of internet deprivation and found discussions on race and class that inspired hope…
Yes, there were some strong opinions.. and more than a little intellectual (and not so intellectual) head-butting.. but there was also real conversation… something i might have missed had i been in the middle instead of reading the thread in it’s entirety.
I’ve got a real case of the warm and fuzzies, so i thought i would post this before delving into other threads…. that are sure to infuriate and spoil all this hopefulness i am feeling ;-)

i thought today was a good day to share hope.

WesMemberIsn’t this also called, “The Secret” and “The New Earth”? The law of attraction? Ahhh New Age Humanism, what will you look like tomorrow?

JanSParticipantI don’t think the documentary has anything to do with “The Secret”….no where in there was there a reference to that , that I noticed. “The Secret” people would have taken more credit, I think.

New age humanism, a popular buzzword promoted by insecure, paranoid christians. Those that fear anything that challenges their *one answer fits all* philosophy. It’s too bad a desire to relieve human suffering and take care of the planet is viewed as a threat and given a derogatory connotation.
Entire christian groups devote their energy to eradicating this *evil* (as they perceive it) from our education system. The very souls of our children being at risk, of course (their words).
Who cares if it’s called the secret, new earth, new age, or just being responsible. Shouldn’t helping others and protecting the planet be everyone’s values, regardless of their beliefs?

WesMemberTo what end? What’s wrong with having a one answer fits all philosophy? Are you opposed to slavery? Or is being opposed to slavery to narrow minded? I am not opposed to relieving the human suffering, albeit a natural part of our exsistence, nor taking care of the environment, as I believe that we are stewards of this planet.
As I was simply pointing out that it all sounds the same, just different faces.
By the way the buzzwords actually come from the people who hold those position themselves, not those big meany Christians.
Ax to grind though, JT?

JoBParticipantWes,
i have been around long enough to hear a lot of buzzwords.. including those we used in the late 60s…
i have lived those buzzwords and you will have to forgive this grandmother (soon to be great-grandmother) her optimism that some of what we tried to learn and teach our children has trickled down to an international youth movement dedicated to substantive change…
that is…. trying to live the life that Christianity and many other religions preach.. practicing personal responsibility and kindness as a way of life.
I too get frustrated with all the new age stuff bouncing around… with people who are just now discovering essential truths i learned in my youth .. surrounding them with yet another new vocabulary… but often still missing the point.
but it is never too late to get something as essential as the need for dialog… or kindness.. or personal responsibility for more than just financial matters.
And that how we treat one another is being seen as an essential element by young people.. at the most difficult stage of their development for empathy.. is a good thing…

WesMemberI agree with you on these statements JoB, and as a father, teacher and a youth leader I know that young people don’t want talking heads who do not do anything except in theory, but put their faith with deeds, and not for our glory nor for personal gain, but for the joy of others and, as I see it, for God’s glory.
June 26, 2008 at 11:33 pm #628894
JoBParticipantWes.. i can’t agree more with that…
i just got an email from my eldest grandson (a year from HS graduation) that talked about the need for Christians to behave as Christians… for God’s glory.
it makes a grandma proud.
and it gives me great hope.
June 26, 2008 at 11:40 pm #628895
WesMemberThat too gives me great hope, pray for me as I try to impart this to the youth.

JoBParticipantWes,
it is not an easy thing to talk to youth in ways that they will hear… you are in my prayers for making the effort…
share the video:)
