Summer Solstice Maintenance Work Party and Tour at the Seattle Chinese Garden Saturday, June 20th, 10 am to 3 pm. Come at any time, for any length of time.

The Seattle Chinese Garden is one of the most unusual gardens in the Northwest and is largely maintained by volunteers. At this time of year with warm weather and “plants and weeds gone wild,” we need extra help to ensure the Garden looks its best for upcoming weddings, special events, regular visitors, and for you —our West Seattle neighbors. The work party begins at 10 am with a quick tour of our five-acre site, led by head gardener Bob Seely. See our authentic Sichuan-style grounds and architecture and our bamboo groves at the peak of shooting season. Enjoy learning about many other plants from China. Any level of gardening experience is welcome, and we love to answer gardening questions!

Saturday’s work will include:
• watering plants
• moving soft soil to create new peony beds
• weeding
• pruning and thinning bamboo groves
• raking and tidying beds
• hauling debris to our composting areas

If you have gardening tools, please bring them, along with gloves. And bring a lunch and drink, plus sunscreen and a hat. Anyone who aspires to prune should bring pruning shears, saws, loppers, and safety glasses. Long-handled hoes would be good to bring if you don’t want to get down on hands and knees.

LOCATION: The Garden is at the north end of the South Seattle College campus, adjacent to the college arboretum. Check out our website at seattlechinesegarden.org for directions. Parking is free on 16th Avenue SW and is available on campus (North Entrance) for a nominal charge.
