With its cool sounds and hot rhythms, the musical genre of jazz has a little something for everyone. Join the Puget Sound’s premier handbell ensemble for a journey through the history of this American art form. Bells of the Sound will perform standards such as In the Mood, St. Louis Blues and Take Five along with several original compositions arranged especially for this program. You’ll be tapping your toes and snapping your fingers like the coolest hepcat before you know it!

In 2011, Bells of the Sound sponsored a composition contest for jazz-themed compositions especially for handbells. Sixteen unique and creative entries from composers around the country were received, and through a complex judging process, several were chosen to be performed in this concert series. In addition to First Place winner Glad Sound Blues by Michael Mazzatenta from Mesa, Arizona and Second Place winner Tigress Rag by Larry Sue of Mountain View, California, you will hear Bell Bossa by Ron Mallory of Maple Valley, Washington, and Hot Day, Cold Wine by Sharon Vogel of Tacoma, Washington.

Bells of the Sound is not your typical handbell choir. Under the direction of Shirley Lindberg, this talented group of musicians is a dynamic force in the handbell world – encouraging composers to create new works and advancing this exciting instrument into the mainstream of entertainment. They perform on over 7 octaves of Malmark handbells and 5 octaves Malmark Choirchimes – over 150 pieces of equipment and one of the largest sets in the country. Bells of the Sound will give you a whole new perspective of handbells that you won’t want to miss!
