The Salvation Army Community Center HYPE Basketball Program is having tryouts starting tonight and throughout the week for their AAU youth basketball program. The youth basketball teams has been comprised of mostly West Seattle kids who play in the competitve AAU basketball leagues and tournaments during the winter season. Details are as follows:

Another program that the Salvation Community Center is doing early next month is a FREE basketball skills-and-drills program for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders. Starting Nov. 8th 5:15-7pm Mondays and Fridays, participants will be coached through 45 minutes of basketball skills and drills, followed by 45 minutes of gametime.
Most of the participants are from West Seattle, he says. This all happens at the Salvation Army Community Center at 9020 16th Ave SW; questions? Call Sean Connors at (206) 767-3150 ext -108.

Join both schools, alumni and the entire West Seattle community in this annual contest between friendly rivals. Festivities include a free pre-game barbecue provided by long-time supporters, Steve and Tom Huling. Everyone is invited to start the day with a guided tour of the newly finished Chief Sealth International High School.
Half-time entertainment includes an exciting joint performances from the two bands as well a light-hearted competition between the two schools’ student leaders. The Chief Sealth cheerleaders will also perform.
Following the conclusion of the game Chief Sealth senior football players will be recognized as part of their “Senior Night.”
Pre-game:

Right in the middle of homecoming/spirit week, a big nighttime event at Chief Sealth International High School – with three sports teams teaming up to raise money for the athletics program. In our top photo, that’s Sealth athletic director Sam Reed with members of the volleyball team, one of the three – also front and center in the effort, boys’ basketball:

But the teams couldn’t do it alone. Friends and families joined them at Wednesday night’s spaghetti dinner:
From a platform above the crowd, Principal John Boyd opened up the bidding for a silent auction:
Items listed included a Mariner-autographed baseball and a “Two-Hour Work-Crew Party” donated by six Sealth basketball players and their coach. Another unique fundraising element, the dessert dash, won by (making the highest donation) table 19:

Tomorrow (Thursday) is tipoff day for West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) youth basketball signups for ages 4-11. Just got the reminder from sports director Matt Schlede, who says you can sign up by clicking “youth basketball” on this webpage listing Y activities – that’ll show you all the options. It’s basically a 7-game schedule with one practice during the week and one game on the weekend; practices start after Thanksgiving, and the first games are the weekend of December 11th. (You can also register in person at the West Seattle YMCA or Fauntleroy YMCA.)
Got plans for dinner this Wednesday? Here’s a chance to dine at the newly renovated Chief Sealth International High School while helping its athletics program:
This Wednesday, October 13th, the Football, Boys’ Basketball, and Volleyball programs at Sealth will host a dinner benefit to support these programs. It will be a spaghetti dinner event with short presentations from each sport. The dinner will begin at 7:00 pm; tickets are $12, with the proceeds going toward the Football, Boys Basketball and Volleyball programs, and Sealth Athletics. Purchasing a dinner ticket will also give you free admission to the first Sealth home basketball game in the new gym when the Boys’ Basketball team takes on Brisbane, Australia, on November 30th, 2010 at 7:00pm. You can purchase dinner tickets at the door this Wednesday night starting at 6:30 pm. The event will be held in the brand new Galleria at Chief Sealth.

Another construction project is under way in West Seattle right now, in addition to the various commercial and park projects we’ve been updating – but you might not have heard much about it unless you are affiliated with West Seattle Little League or a frequent visitor to Bar-S Playfield on Alki Point. New construction and storage buildings are about to go up at the field, according to WSLL president Mark Terao, who e-mailed to share news of a new website that’s tracking the project, as it gets under way in a big way (at left, that’s WSLL Board Member/Majors Manager Mark O’Neil, photographed during work about a week ago to clear out the old snack shack before it’s taken down):
The site has been prepared for the build. The old container has been relocated to make space for the new storage building. Everything has been cleared out of the old snack shack and our contractor has shot the grade and staked the location of the new buildings. We will be removing the old shack this week and pouring the foundation. … We are shooting for a completion date of January 15th 2011. Currently the project is estimated to cost $150,000. To date, we are still in need of roughly $30,000 to complete the project. Through the generous support of local businesses and residents, this number is shrinking, but it is still a big nut and we are still asking the community for help.
Mark says, “For a minimum donation of $100 you can have your family’s (or) business/organization’s name placed on the permanent “Thank You” plaque that will be affixed to the building.” You can find a donation form on the West Seattle Little League’s main website here. Meantime, Mark says they will continue to update progress, with photos and info, on the project website.
When he is not carrying it around, it is hanging from the wall with a picture of Nate Jaqua next to it. He was so excited. The kids were standing there getting autographs and my daughter was holding a replica trophy that we made. He asked Nate for his medal and I said, laughing, no, Jett, you can’t have his medal, he just earned that. But then he finished his autographs and took it off his neck and handed it to Jett. Jett just keeps saying, I can’t believe it. Nate Jaqua is such a good guy to do that. I brought the replica trophy and real medal to Gatewood the next day for Jett to show his 1st-grade class and Jordan to show her 3rd-grade class. I am so happy for him.

In the final few days of last year, we brought you the story of 34-year-old West Seattleite John Wallace III‘s then-latest milestone: Running at least a mile a day, every day, for 20 years. One of his other achievements included running across the USA in 2004, and reporter Keri DeTore noted in the story that Wallace planned to do it again, hoping to set a world record this time, starting October 10, 2010. That day is here – and Wallace’s plan is on, all out. He’s scheduled to leave Los Angeles City Hall this morning, to start a 2,900-mile route to New York City Hall:
If Wallace keeps the pace of 64.5 miles a day, he can break the old across-the-US record of 46 days, and get to New York in 45 (or fewer), arriving a few days before Thanksgiving (here’s the planned schedule). He’s also hoping to raise money for three charities (all on this page). He is scheduled to start running at, of course, 10 am (10-10-10 @ 10). We’ll check in along his journey, and his website has a variety of links you can use to do the same – he’s also on Facebook, where you can find Run USA 2010here.
One more high-school-sports shoutout this weekend (in addition to Friday coverage of cross-country and football): We talked with a local coach who is looking back at how he began, as he celebrates his 200th win!
That’s Jeff Norton, longtime Seattle Lutheran High School girls’ soccer coach (and former principal, and current science teacher). He got his 200th win this past Monday when the Lady Saints beat Tacoma Baptist at Fort Steilacoom, 2-1. His team is 5-1-1 in their league so far this year and placed third in the state the last two years. He played college soccer at Concordia University in Portland; coaching SLHS was his first post-college job. He also coached the SLHS boys’ team that won the state championship in 1991.
All three local high-school varsity-football teams lost tonight. At Southwest Athletic Complex in Westwood, the final score was Rainier Beach 31, West Seattle High School 8. WSHS’s lone touchdown came from sophomore DiAndre Johnson, who ran the ball 21 yards for the score:

Just received results of Thursday’s multi-school Lincoln Park high-school cross-country meet from Jason Glover, cross-country coach at Chief Sealth International High School:
Here are the results from the metro 3A cross country meet held @ Lincoln Park 10/7.
In the boys’ race, CSIHS had 4 runners in the top 10, led by senior Daniel Perrine in second place with a personal best of 17:49. WSHS had 3 boys in the top 10, led by M. Wicklam with a time of 19:39.
Out of five teams, CSIHS won with a score of 39 points, while WSHS was second with a score of 47 points.
In the girls’ race, CS freshman Kenaia Neumann won with time of 22:57, followed closely by WSHS’s N. Broten @ 23:16.
Chief Sealth won the girls’ team race with a score of 27 points.
Chief Sealth, West Seattle, Ingraham, Cleveland, and Franklin were the teams involved.

At the first meeting Aug. 5 (WSB coverage here), there was some concern about the potential site; at the second meeting Sept. 15 (WSB coverage here), a slightly different site was proposed, but its potential effects on the existing golf course drew concern. To see what the project team’s come up with now, be at the golf course’s clubhouse at 7 pm Wednesday 10/27.

The West Seattle Thunder 10U Girls Fastpitch Club is looking for experienced players to fill their roster. The Thunder, under the tutelage of local volunteer parent coaches, will plan to compete in girls 10-year-old-and-under Fastpitch Tournaments in the late Spring and Summer of 2011. We plan to hold indoor practices throughout the winter, primarily in the West Seattle High School gym.
