West Seattle (& beyond) Black Friday update: The shopping begins

Thanks to David Rosen from SlickPix Photography for sharing a shot of the line at Westwood Village Target before it opened at 5; we just drove past WWV Staples and noted about 15 people waiting for its doors to open at six. (Nothing like Southcenter, where we’d gone just to gawk at the enormity of the lines; for Best Buy, for example, the line stretched for blocks across neighboring storefronts before the store opened at 5; [added 1:04 pm] our video caught linecutting again this year, this time unnoticed.) If you haven’t already, please see our West Seattle BF update from last night, with some local deals for today – once you’ve gotten the early-morning malling out of your system, it should be a great day to wander around The Junction, the Admiral District, and other West Seattle spots dotted with shops.

Black Friday West Seattle notes

Seriously now – do you really want to drive 15 miles in the middle of the night to stand out in the cold and the (possible) rain and go through this?

And after all that, it may turn out that there were only two of the “doorbuster” items in stock, and you were beaten to them by a couple of fellow line-waiters with jet packs and/or rocket-powered wheelies. No worries. Sleep in and shop West Seattle instead – or, if you insist on getting up and doorbuster-hunting (there ARE a few chances to do that in WS, at some of the chains in WW Village – Bed Bath Beyond opens at 5 with 20% off entire purchase before 10; Target opens at 5 for a two-day sale; Staples opens at 6, though its site is down till 3), shop your local small businesses afterward. Here are a couple highlights from around West Seattle’s business districts:

*From Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) in the Admiral District:

We’ll be giving away one free mercury glass ornament with any purchase of any other holiday decorations, while supplies last. Note that we will NOT be opening early… we aren’t morning people on any day of the year and certainly not the day after Thanksgiving! We are open noon to 7 pm. Our extended holiday hours begin Monday.

*Grand opening day for Mountain to Sound Outfitters, the new enterprise by the Alki Kayak Tours entrepreneurs, 3602 SW Alaska (map). They’re planning a free barbecue noon-2 pm.

*In The Junction, Edie’s Shoes has a 20 percent coupon (get it here). And Cherry Consignment (open 10 am-6 pm) is offering 10 percent off today and tomorrow to shoppers who bring a friend to the store with them.

*Also in The Junction, you can get your entries in for the $6500 giveaway – details on the Junction Association website, including list of participating businesses.

(added Friday morning) *On Alki, from Coastal Boutique‘s newsletter:

This Friday, November 27th, shoppers who spend $80 or more at Coastal will receive a
FREE $20 Coastal Gift Card as a thank you for shopping at Coastal!

(added Friday morning) *Another Junction note just in from Lisa at CAPERS:

CAPERS celebrates the kickoff to the holidays with a BLAFRITHWECYMON SALE [Black Friday Thanksgiving Weekend Cyber Monday Sale]. No camping necessary to save. Dining tables are 25% off, selected chairs are up for adoption & customers will receive a $10 gift card for every $50 they spend through Monday. Additional details at 932-0371.

(Reminder to businesses – any time of the year, you can post Freebies, Deals, Sales *free* in the WSB Forums section by that name – start here.)

(back to original report) And one more note for weekend shoppers:

*If you’re shopping for books, note that West Seattle High School Grad Night 2010 has a Bookfair going at Barnes & Noble through Sunday (any store, but you need to tell them you’re using Voucher #10001303, and if you show a receipt with that # on it, you get a free slice of pizza at Giannoni’s Pizza in Westwood Village).

Quick note about Thanksgiving coupons added to the WSB Coupons page, where six WSB sponsors now have special offers – $5 off when you let PCC Natural Markets do the cooking for Thanksgiving, and four newly added coupons for Hotwire Coffee – two for free drinks Thursday-Sunday, two offers that are good from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve. See the Coupons page here – and note, we have a special link there for printing the holiday coupons on one regular sheet of paper, so you don’t waste paper printing out the header and the sidebar. (Speaking of Thursday coffee, we are almost done checking to see who’s open on Thanksgiving – Hotwire’s there 8 am-2 pm – and we’ll add the list to the WSB Holidays page as soon as it’s done.)

At Square 1 Books (WSB sponsor), the doors have just opened for the second and final day of the store’s anniversary sale, 15% off, till 5:30 pm. (We photographed Square 1’s Mary Kate Austin and proprietor Gretchen Montgomery toward the end of Day 1 last night.) Another WSB sponsor, Click! Design That Fits, has an artist reception tonight – 6 till 9 pm, Rachel Austin will be at the Admiral District shop to talk about her popular work, which has been on display recent West Seattle Art Walk nights. (2:53 pm update – Click! co-proprietor John Smersh e-mailed this image of one of the new works Rachel’s bringing up from Portland, incorporating local maps – he says this one’s called “Renton”:)

Speaking of fun ways to appreciate art, White Center for the Arts is hosting its monthly art walk tonight – six locations participating, plus a showing of short films is planned – 6 to 9 pm, see the full lineup and the official poster on our partner site White Center Now. And this afternoon, 1-5 pm, the Fauntleroy Art Sale and Show continues at Fauntleroy Church. Meantime, back in The Junction, TrueValue and Northwest Art & Frame are having open houses today. LOTS more happening throughout the day and night – the full list is in the West Seattle Weekend Lineup.

The West Seattle Weekend Lineup is in the works, but first, from the WSB Events calendar (where you’ll find a long list of things happening today and beyond), three sales starting/happening today/tonight: First, day 1 of the 2-day anniversary sale at West Seattle’s independent book store Square 1 Books in Jefferson Square – 15% off everything. The doors just opened and Square 1’s open till 6 pm; sale continues tomorrow, 10 am-5:30 pm. Second, South Seattle Community College‘s increasingly renowned wine program invites you to the Pre-Thanksgiving Wine Tasting and Sale this afternoon/evening – 4-8 pm – here are full details on the wines they’re featuring (note: both Square 1 Books and SSCC are WSB sponsors). Finally, the Fauntleroy Art Show and Sale opens at 6:30 tonight at Fauntleroy Church (9140 California SW; more details on Facebook).

WS Chamber at Westwood Village: Sneak peek at Santa’s new HQ

West Seattle Chamber of Commerce members and guests were at Westwood Village tonight as WSCC president/CEO Patti Mullen and WWV manager Stuart Crandall cut the ribbon for Santa’s new digs in the original Wyatt’s Jewelers [WSB sponsor] storefront across the breezeway from 24 Hour Fitness during the chamber’s After-Hours event tonight. Santa listened to holiday wishes, too – including the ones shared by Rick Jump from White Center Food Bank and Nancy Woodland from WestSide Baby:

Rick asked for enough food to feed the 1,000 people his agency (which serves part of WS too) will see in the next week; Nancy asked for enough diapers to make life pleasant for the hundreds of little ones whose families get help through her agency. (WC Food Bank REALLY needs turkeys, by the way – their website has info on how to donate – they’ll be there on Saturday this week too; while WestSide Baby has specifics on its site too.) As for the rest of the event – Wyatt’s proprietors Joni and Kirk Keppler opened their new storefront in the heart of the center (by Chico’s, north of Barnes & Noble) to visitors:

Other Westwood Village merchants participated too (with treats from eateries Giannoni’s Pizza, Eats Market Cafe and Sub Shop), as the shopping center gets ready for the holidays. Back to Santa, we’ve got his schedule on the new WSB West Seattle Holidays page; he’s all about doing good in the community – photos are free with a food donation, there’s a Giving Tree for the Salvation Army, a place to drop off diapers (preferably sizes 3-6) for WestSide Baby, and gift wrapping is free but anything you donate will go to local nonprofits. More Chamber info, by the way (disclosure – WSB is among the many local businesses that are members), at wschamber.com.

West Seattle scenes: Alki Mail and Dispatch’s 20th birthday party

Good crowd tonight at Alki Mail and Dispatch (WSB sponsor), which invited friends and neighbors to come help celebrate its 20th anniversary during a three-hour open house. The celebration actually continues all the way through Saturday – but the gift’s for you: 20 percent off everything – see the coupon on Alki Mail’s newly remodeled website (where you’ll find other cool links, including Alki Mail’s latest tweets – pretty sure they’re the only mailbox business in West Seattle where you can check via Twitter to see if the day’s mail is in!). Alki Mail’s at 47th & Admiral (map).

A bakery for Admiral: Heavenly Pastry and Cake is on the way

Story and photo by Mary Sheely
Reporting for West Seattle Blog

A little bit of heaven is coming to Admiral Junction.

Heavenly Pastry and Cake will be taking over the storefront at 2604 California SW (formerly the West Seattle Herald offices). But while the bakery location will be new, the business isn’t — Heavenly Pastry and Cake owner Allison Barnes and husband Michael Stein, along with various nieces and nephews, are more than familiar to visitors at farmers’ markets around town.

“If we ever miss one, we hear about it next week, like, “Where were you guys?’” says Barnes.

It’s no wonder — the selection of “sweeties and savories” made by Barnes and her “partner in crime” Clove Burt include the Raspberry-Hazelnut Yum fruit bar (“Our niece named it, because that’s what it makes you say,” says Stein) scones made with heavy cream, and the signature Oma Stein’s Pretzel, from a recipe by Michael’s German grandmother.

New WSB sponsor: Alki Mail and Dispatch, celebrating 20 years!

This afternoon we welcome a new WSB sponsor that’s about to celebrate a milestone: Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of Alki Mail and Dispatch, and they’re throwing a party tomorrow evening to celebrate. More on that shortly – first, here’s what Alki Mail and Dispatch wants you to know about their business: Proprietor Don Wahl (second from right) says it’s not just the convenience of all their services – get your mail, send a package, grab some coffee, use a computer – in one place, he also believes his business has thrived for 20 years because people want somewhere to connect with others – even in our world of so much screen time, you need face time too and that’s what happens at Alki Mail and Dispatch. Don says that’s what keeps people coming back – the fact that people know you, and know what you need. He describes Alki Mail and Dispatch as being like “Cheers” – where everybody knows your name, only with caffeine instead of alcohol. Recalling his business’s beginnings, Don says fax machines and computers and copiers cost a lot 20 years ago, so he saw a real opportunity, and his late partner Don Cavanaugh had owned a similar business, so they thought they could make a go of it. Indeed they did – on the beach for 15 years, and now for 5 years at a location Wahl owns. You’ll find Alki Mail and Dispatch at 4701 SW Admiral Way (map) – online at www.alkimail.com – and on Twitter, where customers can find out when the mail’s in, at @alkimail. Tomorrow night’s party, by the way, is 5-8 pm – stop in and say hi! We thank Alki Mail and Dispatch for sponsoring independent, community-collaborative neighborhood news on WSB; find our sponsor team, and info on joining, all here.

Followup: BECU’s early withdrawal from Admiral, & the Alki ATM

In a weekend roundup of West Seattle business notes (biznotes if we can’t fit both words in the headline!), we shared Diane‘s report of BECU sending a letter to say its Admiral Safeway branch is closing because of the upcoming store-reconstruction project; then in the first comment, angelescrest” reported that Alki’s BECU ATM (Google Street View above) is gone. We followed up on both with Todd Pietzsch in BECU media relations, particularly to find out why the Admiral Safeway branch is closing now, though construction is not expected before the middle of next summer. Read on to see his reply:Read More

West Seattle biznotes: Bank branch closing; fitness name change

ADMIRAL SAFEWAY BECU BRANCH CLOSING: Thanks to Diane for the tip – she got a letter saying the Admiral Safeway BECU branch is closing as of 1 pm December 5. The letter says, “The Safeway building is being reconstructed so we must close this location.” The most recent estimate given by Safeway for when they hope to start construction is next summer (and late summer at that), so we’ll be checking with BECU regarding why they’re closing this far in advance. The letter does say the BECU ATM at the store will remain open as long as the store does.

PILATES NAME CHANGE: Thanks to Mike for the tip – Pilates Westside in Morgan Junction, which opened 6 months ago, is changing its name to Pilates al Dente. Mike spotted the notice posted on the storefront that also mentions a change in ownership. Online records show that name registered to one of the original owners we interviewed last spring. No website for Pilates al Dente yet.

THERAPEUTIC ASSOCIATES/WEST SEATTLE PHYSICAL THERAPY: Earlier this week, we briefly mentioned this firm’s new digs in Capco Plaza, the building with the new QFC, on the 41st SW side. We’ve since received an official announcement from them, including the benefits of their new location: “designed with their patient’s needs in mind and includes free parking, an easily accessible elevator and upgrades to state of the art equipment.”

The Little Gym of West Seattle: Welcoming a new WSB sponsor

Today we’re welcoming a new WSB sponsor, The Little Gym of West Seattle, about to open at California/Myrtle (map). It’s WSB tradition for new sponsors to get the chance to share information about their business, so here’s what The Little Gym wants you to know: When new parents come to us and ask “why should I sign up for a class at The Little Gym?”, we ask them a very important question back- “What are you looking for in a program?” Some parents are looking for their children to learn fundamental motor and gymnastics skills, while other parents are looking for a class that emphasizes structured social interaction for their children. Others might want a place to take a class with friends in an environment that is fun and friendly, where they can connect and interact with other parents who have children of the same age. The reasons that people bring their children to The Little Gym are numerous, but the reasons that they stay with us have to do with both the dynamic teachers and the curriculum of our classes. We strive to create an environment of love, patience, respect, security and fun, while at the same time teaching real gymnastics skills from an early age that will get them started toward a healthy and active life. Our teachers are continually trained in both movement analysis and children¹s developmental milestones. Starting with babies at 4 months, and going through the age of 12 years old, The Little Gym gives children and parents a solid skill foundation that includes gross and fine motor skills, strength, coordination, balance, and a healthy dose of positive self image. We teach children to try their best, and that it is always ok to make a mistake – mistakes are how we learn and improve. We currently have 6 teachers from our other locations coming to teach at The Little Gym of West Seattle (3 are West Seattle residents!), and will continue to add more friendly faces as the program grows. Interested families are always welcome to join our program for a free introductory class, which they can either schedule over the phone at 206-937-0311 or online at www.tlgwestseattlewa.com. Our first week of classes will begin the week of November 9th, and our Open House is scheduled for Saturday, November 21st from 2-5 pm – bring a food donation for West Seattle Food Bank!

On a side note, our computer system had an email address glitch in it for a few weeks in September. We did not receive e-mail inquiries during this time, and were only able to recapture some of the lost e-mails. If you inquired and did not get a response back, we are sincerely sorry for the problem and would love to hear from you again!

We thank The Little Gym of West Seattle for sponsoring independent, community-collaborative neighborhood news on WSB; find our sponsor team, and info on joining, all here.

West Seattle biznotes: Angelina’s, snowboards, cycling, coffee

ALMOST OPEN: The remodeled Angelina’s in the Admiral District is almost ready to open. (Thanks to Krista for the shot of the new sign.) After “friends and family” previews this week, they’re just awaiting the final go-ahead (inspections, etc.) to open to the public; here’s our preview story from the midst of the major work. Meantime, we’ve got the opening date for another business-in-progress:

DATE SET: Greg Whittaker from Alki Kayak Tours says November 27 is set as the date for opening their new ski, paddlesports and rack shop in the Triangle, Mountain to Sound Outfitters. He sent the above photo “to get the ski bums excited!” now that inventory-stocking is under way – that’s Jon Steel, ski technician and kayaking guide, with some of the inventory. (As first reported here, the shop’s at 3602 SW Alaska [map].)

CYCLE U OPEN HOUSE/GRAND OPENING: Also in the Triangle, the new Cycle U at 4550 Fauntleroy SW is having its official grand-opening open house on Saturday, with giveaways and refreshments; full details online; here’s our Cycle U story from last month.

COFFEE CHANGE:Rockergirl” first noted this in the WSB Forums and now Paul from PB&J Textiles confirms it: They’ve sold their 6-month-old shop Coffee at the Heights (WSB sponsor) to barista Andrea. Paul says, “She has always wanted to own her own coffee shop. We are very grateful to our customers and had a blast running the shop! We are not going far, we still have our other 2 businesses here in West Seattle. Soon we will be doing upgrades to the Olympic Heights Laundry.” That’s next door to the coffee shop (7349 35th SW).

West Seattle biz: Heavenly Wholesale opens, All the Best closing

Thanks to Diane for the photos and information: The Heavenly Wholesale/Leslie’s storefront in The Junction, east side of California SW south of Alaska, where Funky Jane’s was before moving to California/Oregon, opens this week, 10 am-6 pm Tuesdays-Saturdays, 11 am-5 pm Sundays. Here’s Jill, longtime Heavenly proprietor:

The former “Heavenly” storefront in The Triangle is the building where Greg Whittaker of Alki Kayak Tours recently announced they plan to open a storefront. Here’s Leslie, indeed the same Leslie who formerly operated Leslie’s Country Store in the California SW location that is now home to The Bohemian:

Prudential NW Realty finishes moving HQ back to West Seattle

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

This time of year, for the past several years, longtime West Seattle real-estate entrepreneur Mike Gain would have been wintering in the California desert.

Instead, one morning last week, he talked with WSB while at his desk on the fourth floor of the Jefferson Square office building, looking out where the Olympics might have been visible if not for a thick wall of clouds.

But he’s not complaining. When we last interviewed him 8 months ago, he had just returned to take over Prudential Northwest Realty, five years after selling it. Its previous owners had moved the corporate headquarters to the Eastside; in March, Gain told us he hoped to move the HQ back to West Seattle, where he and longtime business partner Roger Cayce first scored real-estate success decades earlier.

The reason we interviewed Gain again now: He says the move is finally complete, and Prudential’s 24 corporate employees are now headquartered at Jefferson Square, where the company has taken over more than 4,000 square feet on the fourth floor in addition to its 14,000+-square-foot 6th-floor offices.

Dr. Bill Raleigh, D.D.S.: Welcome, new West Seattle Blog sponsor

Today we welcome one of our newest WSB sponsors, William H. Raleigh, D.D.S. Situated at the corner of California and Genesee (map), Dr. Raleigh‘s dental office is becoming a landmark among the new nearby developments full of condos and retail spaces. Dr. Bill Raleigh and his staff believe the comfortable and caring atmosphere of their practice adds a friendly touch that ties in well with Junction families, friends and neighbors. For patients who don’t walk to the office, there is parking available behind Dr. Raleigh‘s office with a ramp from the parking lot for strollers, walkers and wheelchairs. West Seattle biznotes: Wyatt’s Jewelers move, KeyBank, Angelina’s

At Westwood Village, Wyatt’s Jewelers (WSB sponsor) sends word its move to a new, more visible storefront is complete, right on schedule, done in time for the new location’s debut yesterday. They’re now open Tuesdays-Saturdays 10 am-6 pm in the spot you see above, next to Chico’s, which is in turn just north of Barnes and Noble, in the heart of WV. Meantime, in The Junction, KeyBank is done with its remodeling work:

Kevin McClintic took that photo back in August, as crews did late-night work on the bank’s big remodel. Now we have word that the months of work are over, and the branch plans a “grand opening” celebration next week, with refreshments and snacks for those who stop in. Here’s what changed, according to a KeyBank news release:

Inside the updated branch is a new teller line, a pair of flat TV screens featuring information of interest to clients and a community wall of photos depicting local scenes and landmarks. New offices and conference rooms accommodate client meetings requiring privacy, and a new, comfortable waiting area is complete with a coffee cart.

Key’s new “Teller 21” technology places better information in the hands of tellers quickly, freeing up time for them to advise and interact with clients. Behind the scenes, processing and handling time is significantly reduced: for example, a check brought to the branch would once have been handled up to 12 times by tellers, proof operators and others involved in the processing function. With Teller 21, that check is handled only once.

(added 1:08 pm) One more note – we checked with Allison Rich, new co-owner of Angelina’s, regarding their progress toward reopening after the remodel (here’s our last “sneak peek” story). She says they’re now hoping to be ready around the middle of next week.

West Seattle/White Center biznotes: Wins for Full Tilt, ZippyDogs

FULL TILT ICE CREAM WINS “BEST OF WESTERN WASHINGTON”: They’re headquartered in White Center but have been adopted by enough West Seattleites to feel like something of a WS annex, in the nonpolitical sense. As announced in the WSB Forums, Full Tilt Ice Cream has won its category in the KING 5 “Best of Western Washington” voting, and our video shows co-proprietors Justin Cline and Ann Magyar getting interviewed this afternoon by KING 5 producer Eric Riddle for the upcoming broadcast. Full Tilt first opened in White Center less than 2 years ago and has since expanded to Columbia City, with a Ballard location in the works too. (Any other WS/WC businesses win BoWW? Let us know!)

“SHOWMANSHIP” WIN FOR ZIPPYDOGS: Elise Lindborg from ZippyDogs, a West Seattle-based promotional-products company, is howling proud of their win for “Best Booth Showmanship” at this year’s Northwest Event Show, which recently drew thousands to the Washington State Convention and Trade Center. Lindborg, who identifies herself as ZippyDogs’ “Top Dog,” notes, “We try to make every day fun, and we strive to be helpful, professional, friendly, and yes, a little playful!” They’re online at zippydogs.com.
