Tonight at Delridge Community Center – a Halloween carnival that had everyone aglow. It was lights-out in the gym for the Glow-In-The-Dark Party, with crafts and games.

Best part – all this fun was for free:

So was the Delridge Grocery “pop-up pumpkin patch,” sporting little spotlights:

Partygoers had the chance to take pumpkins home – just in time to turn them into jack-o-lanterns!

The folks at West Seattle Autoworks and Swedish Automotive (WSB sponsors) are already planning next year’s West Seattle Car Show and want you to know that the date is set. This will be the show’s second spin on the north side of South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) on Puget Ridge, where it moved this year after seven years in The Junction. The official date: August 27, 2016, not only earlier in the summer, but also on a Saturday instead of a Sunday. Fewer conflicts on many fronts, says WSAW’s Todd Ainsworth, from other shows to football to weather. So now you know!

Just two weeks until school’s out for Veterans Day on November 11th, and we’ve heard of at least one special school-holiday event: Melinda Fredricks and the West Seattle High School Cheer Team invite kids K-5 to the annual Mini Cheer Camp, 10 am-1 pm that day in the WSHS Gym. If you’re interested, you’ll want to register your kid(s) TODAY – because it’s the deadline to guarantee a T-shirt.

Campers will enjoy a day of fun and excitement learning cheers, jumps, making crafts and spending time with the WSHS Cheer team! All campers will receive pom =-poms, a hair bow, T-shirt, pennant, and photo with the cheerleaders! All campers are also invited back to show off their new talents at the Girls Varsity Basketball game Friday, December 4th, at halftime!! We are looking forward to seeing many returning campers as well as many smiling new faces. Bring your friends!! The more the merrier!!

Our video shows the starting-line scene in just under a minute, as the annual West Seattle Monster Dash got going at 9 this morning in what was at the time the spooky, semi-foggy forest of Lincoln Park. Check out the costumes! Organizers say it was the biggest turnout ever for this family-friendly 5K – accompanied with a kids’ dash afterward – which raises money for the West Seattle Cooperative Preschools. Almost 200 people are listed in the official timed results. ages 6 to 65!

Every year in early December, the Rotary Club of West Seattle brings holiday gifts and fun to about a hundred local students in need via its annual Children’s Shopping Spree. The rest of the year, the club has other events and donation drives to raise money for its charitable projects, including the spree. You’re invited to be part of a fall fundraiser that’s now just eight days away:

Saturday, October 24, 2015, the Rotary Club of West Seattle will host its 2nd annual Oktoberfest from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM at Alki Masonic Hall, 4736 40th Ave SW. Free parking is available in the lot adjacent to the hall.

The festivities will include German & local microbrew BEER, authentic German FOOD, an Oompah BAND, and a RAFFLE.

Net proceeds from the event will be used to support the Club’s charitable projects. Tickets are $45 and may be purchased (must be age 21 or older) on the Club’s website.

YOU CAN HELP! Fight MS through music and dance with the West Seattle Big Band on Saturday

This Saturday, enjoy the music of the West Seattle Big Band – and dance if you want to – to make a difference in the fight against multiple sclerosis! Here’s the announcement:

You can make a difference, and enjoy live music from the West Seattle Big Band at the same time! The third annual Dance MS is being held at the West Seattle Senior Center (4217 SW Oregon) on Saturday, October 3rd, from 7-10 pm. Come ready to dance, or just to listen to some great music.

The event also includes a small live auction, and several silent auction items, ranging from coffee at C&P to vacation packages to drum lessons. All of the event proceeds will go toward the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, since event expenses are either covered through the band or donation.

You may know the West Seattle Big Band from our connection to the Seattle schools: while we perform for events such as weddings and concerts throughout the Seattle area, rather than taking pay, musicians in the band donate any income back to assist school band programs, primarily in the West Seattle area.

Dance MS strays from the band’s mission statement, but holds a special meaning for the group. In 2012, our piano player Brooke Yool was diagnosed with MS. She asked for the band’s support and arranged the first Dance MS in 2013, and the event was a huge success.

So, we ask for your support to make the third Dance MS even more successful than the first two. In order for this to happen, we ask you — the local community — to help us in the fight against MS.

Come down to the West Seattle Senior Center on Saturday, October 3rd. Doors open at 7, and we’ll be going strong until 10. Suggested donation is $15. Hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks are included. 11:33 AM: That ’57 BMW Isetta is one of the more unusual cars you’ll see today at the eighth annual West Seattle Car Show, rebooted to a brand-new location in the north lot at South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor). The cars span the decades – going back even further, here’s a 1947 Buick Super 8 convertible:

Trophies will be announced and awarded at 3 pm – and if you come to the show by 2:30 pm, you can vote on the People’s Choice award:

Along with the cars, you’ll see trucks, bicycles, and this mini-hydroplane showing off a 1959 Mercury Mark motor:

The West Seattle-based Nibbles food truck is here with its “Southwest fusion” flavors:

(So far, the mini-donut truck is a no-show.) You’ll find beverages inside the Northwest Wine Academy – including some of their award-winning wines:

While the fog and clouds are starting to lift, it’s also a great day for hot beverages, and you’ll find coffee there too. Again this year, Swedish Automotive and West Seattle Autoworks (both WSB sponsors) organized the show. Come say hi – our booth is next to their table on the east side of the show, where you can buy a raffle ticket that will benefit the SSC Automotive Tech program as do proceeds from the registration fees. A DJ’s playing hits old and new, and the clouds are starting to lift – we see the sun starting to break through to the south. More to come!

Someone who just stopped by the booth to say hi described the turnout as an “eclectic mix.”

SUNDAY: West Seattle Car Show’s debut at its new community-suggested home

One more reminder before we get to the weekend: It’s time for the eighth annual West Seattle Car Show this Sunday – but don’t look for it in the usual place; it has a brand-new home, on the campus of South Seattle College (WSB sponsor). When it was announced earlier this year that The Junction was no longer available, car-show fans weren’t willing to take “no show” for an answer, and some suggested SSC. Turned out to be a perfect fit because of not only room to roam but also, the campus is home to a well-regarded Automotive Technology program (which is the beneficiary from proceeds of the show, organized again this year by Swedish Automotive and West Seattle Autoworks [both also WSB sponsors]). You’ll be able to tour the program’s home on the north end of the campus during show hours 10 am-3 pm on Sunday, along with another one of SSC’s gems, the Northwest Wine Academy. Wine and beer also will be available for purchase, as will food from local trucks Nibbles and Mini The Dough-Nut. As for the cars (and motorcycles), you can still register on show day – load-in starts at 8 am, and the application is downloadable from the official West Seattle Car Show website. As one of the show co-sponsors, we hope to see you there on Sunday – look for the college’s north entrance, 6000 16th Avenue SW on Puget Ridge.

Early look at the forecast suggests sunshine will grace the eighth annual West Seattle Car Show, now just one week away, next Sunday, September 13th. The show will be at South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) for the first time, as suggested by community members, and that means you’ll also get to see some of the school’s legendary programs showcased, including the Northwest Wine Academy (with wine and beer available for purchase) and Automotive Technology, both on the north side of the SSC campus at 6000 16th SW, as is the Seattle Chinese Garden, which is offering kids’ activities on show day. Food trucks will be on site, including Nibbles and Mini The Dough-Nut. The show runs 10 am-3 pm, and registration is still open – awards will be announced at 3 pm in these categories:

Are you a quilter? Know one? Look what’s up for grabs on one of the tables at Tibbetts United Methodist Church‘s big indoor garage sale tomorrow, 9 am-5 pm. It’s a little different from the rummage sales you might remember in Tibbetts’ past, but one thing’s the same – a huge room full of stuff. Crystal, anyone?

Going up? Celebrating climbing @ new Camp Long Mountain Fest

Long before climbing walls and other ways of heading up without going to the mountains, there was Schurman Rock. It’s just one big reason Camp Long is hosting the new Mountain Fest on September 13th. Here’s how Seattle Parks is announcing the event:

Rock climbing is fast becoming the sport of choice for many in search of an athletic activity with both grit and Zen. Climbing, it seems, is scaling into the mainstream. According to the Outdoor Industry Association, over 10 million people in the United States participate in rock climbing on some level, and Seattleites in particular have embraced this sport with a passion, with rock climbing gyms and venues, both indoor and outdoor­, growing exponentially all the time. To celebrate both this coming-of-age time for the sport of climbing and Seattle’s long-standing mountain and climbing history/community, Seattle Parks and Recreation will open up its historic Camp Long for a Mountain Festival on September 13th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. — where anyone, from novices to hard-core enthusiasts, can get their hands on the rocks and feet off the ground.

Visitors to the Camp Long Mountain Fest will find an exhilarating mix of climbing, conviviality, and challenge.

Usually, you can wander onto Hiawatha Community Center‘s east lawn relatively close to showtime and still get a spot for a Summer Concerts at Hiawatha show. This Thursday, though, if you’re planning to go see and hear Caspar Babypants, you’ll want to get there a little earlier than you would otherwise – the kiddie-rock star’s concerts are usually the most popular ones of the series. On July 31st last year (WSB coverage here), the series-presenting Admiral Neighborhood Association estimated well over a thousand attendees. (Of course, when the heart of the fan base can count their ages on one hand, that means 1,000+ people take up less room than other circumstances.) Time is … fleeting! In one month, it’ll be the 40th anniversary of the debut of “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Don’t wait to celebrate – do it tomorrow night at the courtyard by Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor), during this year’s West Seattle Outdoor Movies finale. (No rice, please – birdseed will be provided!) And bring your own chairs/blankets … and do show up early – gates open at 6:30 pm and you can start staking out your spot then. Movie (free!) is at dusk, which should be around 8:30 pm. Before then, live comedy and music, and concessions (provided by and benefiting the Southwest Seattle Historical Society) plus raffle benefiting Furry Faces Foundation and AARF. It’s a tail-wagging prospect: Your dog, on the cover of CityDog Magazine (founded and edited by West Seattleite Brandie Ahlgren)! First step is this Sunday, when the annual CityDog Cover Dog Model Search returns to West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor). From CityDog:

ALL dogs are welcome to enter for the chance to be on the cover of CityDog, and because all dogs are super models, each and every canine contestant will get their photo in the magazine! $10 per dog to benefit the Doney Memorial Animal Clinic.

Simply swing by West Seattle Thriftway between noon and 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, and CityDog Magazine will snap a photo of your pooch for the chance to be on the cover!

CityDog is 10 years old this year, by the way (human years, anyway).

Where would we be without bees? Your favorite kid(s) can learn more about them at the West Seattle Bee Garden on Saturday, during the first-ever Kids Day presented by the Puget Sound Beekeepers Association! WSBG founder Lauren Englund shares the news:

Beekeepers from the Puget Sound Beekeepers Association are gearing up for the first PSBA Kids’ Day!

The day will begin with a story time hosted by the Seattle Public Library, followed by a variety of science activities. Kids will join a group and rotate through a live hive demonstration, scavenger hunt, and activity booths.

Booth themes will include Waggle Dance, Pollination Simulation, Bee and Flower Facts, Honey Tasting, Meet the Beekeepers, and Crafts.

Participation is free – we hope everyone can come join the fun! We recommend arriving a few minutes early to get assigned to your group before the Story Time begins. Registration/Sign-in will begin at 9:30 am. Parents/Chaperones, please plan to enjoy the event along with your attendees
