 |   Announcements

We received this announcement from Dr. Toni Reineke, Artistic Director of West Seattle Community Orchestras, who says, “We’ve got a great concert coming up next week, and you’re invited! It’s for a great cause at a very teeny price!”

West Seattle Community Orchestra’s (WSCO) Symphonette and Beginning Strings are busily preparing for an outstanding musical opportunity for several school communities. On March 29, the Symphonette and Strings will perform a community outreach concert at 7 pm at Concord International School in South Park to benefit the music programs of Concord and Arbor Heights Elementary. Musical selections will include several of Disney’s most popular tunes from “Mary Poppins” as well as youth orchestra standards. Suggested donation, $1.

Each year, WSCO performs an outreach concert for the community, hosted by one elementary school and generally benefitting two schools’ music programs as part of its mission to support local music education. WSCO also provides tuition-free membership in one of three orchestras for any interested student; more information on this program is available at our

As an intergenerational orchestra, many of the performing musicians at the March 29th concert are students, with our youngest performer at age 7, up through more seasoned adult players who double their roles – musicians and mentors.

Concord International School is located at 723 S. Concord St. in the South Park neighborhood of Seattle.

If you have any questions Toni Reineke can be reached at  (206)-243-6955 or toni@wscorchestras.org

Free Vascular Health Screenings at West Seattle Health Fair March 29th

March 23, 2011 12:23 pm
|    Comments Off on Free Vascular Health Screenings at West Seattle Health Fair March 29th
 |   Announcements

We just received this announcement from Futura Health Screening (WSB Sponsor). They are offering free vascular health screenings at the West Seattle Health Fair on March 29.

If you are over 50, have high blood pressure, are a past or current smoker, or have high cholesterol, then you are at risk for vascular disease, such as stroke, aneurysms and peripheral arterial disease (leg artery blockage).

From 10 am to 1 pm on March 29, Futura Health Screening [WSB Sponsor] will be offering free peripheral arterial disease (PAD) screening at the West Seattle Senior Center Health Fair, located at 4217 SW Oregon St. in West Seattle.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is one of the most common yet least diagnosed forms of vascular disease. If left untreated, PAD can lead to surgery and in severe cases, can lead to amputation. It can also be an indication of serious disease elsewhere in the body. According to the American Heart Association, about eight million people have PAD and these individuals are four to five times more likely to die of heart attacks and strokes as those without the disease.

If you cannot attend the free PAD screening event, screenings are available every Wednesday morning in West Seattle and every Tuesday morning in Kirkland. Futura Health Screening offers low-cost, painless, and accurate ultrasound screenings to check for blockages in the arteries and aortic aneurysms.

Screening exams include carotid artery ultrasound to detect stroke-causing plaque, abdominal aortic ultrasound to detect an aneurysm, and ankle brachial index (ABI) to detect peripheral arterial disease in the legs. Screenings are $45 each or $125 for all three.

Carotid artery disease occurs when fatty deposits, or plaque , build up along the walls of the carotid arteries. The carotid arteries run along either side of the neck and deliver blood from the heart to the brain and head. The buildup of plaque in these arteries blocks the blood supply to the brain and increases risk of stroke.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm, also known as AAA (pronounced “triple A”), is a swelling or bulge that weakens the walls of the aorta. A rupture to the aorta has an 80 percent fatality rate and the vast majority of people with aneurysms are never diagnosed until they experience a fatal rupture. If an aneurysm is detected and treated electively the risk of its fatality is much lower.

Futura Health Screening is the first and only ICAVL accredited non-invasive vascular screening program in Washington State. Futura Health Screening is a division of Pacific Vascular, Inc., the largest provider of vascular ultrasound testing in the Northwest.

To schedule your screening, call (425) 398-7797 or (866) 486-4882. You can also take a personal risk assessment at futurahealthscreening.com.

Youngstown Cultural Arts Center prepares to celebrate its 5th birthday

Youngstown is throwing a party – and just sent out the invitation/announcement:

Our building is old, but we are still young! Join us in a celebration of the creative, collaborative success story that is Youngstown Cultural Arts Center. We opened to the public five years ago on February 26, and this party is for everyone who enjoys the space that exists here for artists, citizens, students, educators, activists, advocates, environmentalists, magicians, performers….you get the idea. It’s for culture building in our community.

4:30 PM-6 PM The residents of Youngstown kick off a monthly film series in our theatre with the funny and insightful Banksy documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. This movie looks at street art and legitimate art side by side, inside out, and drops it like it’s hot. Oh yes, there will be popcorn. Afterward, we’ll make our own art in the halls.

6 PM-8 PM Guests are invited on a Potluck Adventure (food provided by residents) through the upstairs floors of Youngstown, moving from place to place, floor to floor. Bring your binoculars and you might spot some artists in their native habitat.

8 PM-1 AM At the very end, we take a moment to give gratitude to founding faces Randy Engstrom and KC Corell, who guided Youngstown through its infancy, the terrible twos, the wobbly toddler years, all the way to the sturdy age of five. Now they are off to their next adventures, but not without our love. Our Open Mic and Dance Party is in the Movement Studio. There’s beer! 21+ only.

Georgetown Brewing to celebrate anniversary at West 5

February 14, 2011 11:59 am
|    Comments Off on Georgetown Brewing to celebrate anniversary at West 5
 |   Announcements

Just announced – a party at West 5, which recently celebrated its 8th anniversary, in honor of Georgetown Brewing‘s 8th anniversary:

On February 23rd 2003 Georgetown Brewing delivered its first keg of Manny’s Pale Ale to the Latona Pub in Wallingford. Eight years later, Manny’s Pale Ale stands tall as Georgetown Brewing Co.’s flagship beer. The success of Manny’s Pale ale has afforded the owners of Georgetown Brewing Co. to greatly expand their brewing capacity and their selection of “Darn Tasty Brews.”

Georgetown Brewing started out as a small, home-based venture by co-owners Manny Chao and Roger Bialous. Knowing they had created an excellent pale ale, Manny and Roger departed their day jobs, found a location in the historic Rainer Cold Storage building on Airport Way in Georgetown and started brewing Manny’s Pale Ale. Success came quickly for the young brewery and tap handles sporting the colorful “Manny’s” logo started popping up in pubs of quality and character throughout Seattle.

In 2008 Georgetown Brewing vacated their 9000 square foot brewing facility in the old Rainier Cold Storage building and moved into their sparkling new 37,000 square foot facility just across the railroad tracks at 5200 Denver Ave S. Their retail facility later opened in 2010 at the Denver facility.

Reflecting on the anniversary is co-owner Roger Bialous, “This is a proud milestone for everyone at the brewery. With so many great, independent breweries making quality beer in Seattle and Washington State, we are pleased to have enjoyed continued success.” Quipped Manny, “We like to make beer, period. The owners and employees also enjoy consuming beer.”

To celebrate their 8th anniversary, the owners and employees of Georgetown Brewing chose to have a party at West 5 Lounge in West Seattle, a restaurant that also recently celebrated its 8th anniversary. Said Manny “We kind of grew up with Dean and Dave (owners of the West 5). They were one of our earliest customers and we have watched our respective businesses grow together since 2003, becoming friends along the way. We thought – it’s a perfect place for us to celebrate!”

The anniversary party is open to the public at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 23rd. In addition to Manny’s Pale Ale, all of the handles at West 5 will be pouring Georgetown beer. The following will be available for enjoyment: Roger’s Pilsner, Chopper’s Red, Georgetown Porter, Lucille IPA, Lisa’s Chocolate Stout and Superchopp. There will also be giveaways of Georgetown Brewing (and West 5) merchandise.

Coming up at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in West Seattle next weekend:

The Heart of Islam
with Jamal Rahman, Sufi minister, teacher and author
at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church, 3050 California Avenue SW, Seattle, WA
Date: Sunday, February 6, 2011
Time: 12 noon Community Forum
Contact: Sally Carlson, Deacon
206-937-4545 x109

Free and open to the community.

In this time of unrest and confusion, the clear and compassionate voice of Jamal Rahman speaks to the heart of Islam. Come and join us at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church to listen and ask questions, and be part of a forum for learning, understanding, and clarity around the least understood (by our culture) of the Abrahamic traditions.

*Jamal Rahman is a Muslim Sufi minister originally from Bangladesh. He is co-founder and co-minister at Interfaith Community Church in Seattle, Washington, co-host of Interfaith Talk Radio, and adjunct faculty at Seattle University. Jamal travels often, teaching classes, workshops, and retreats locally, nationally, and internationally. He is the author of The Fragrance of Faith: The Enlightened Heart of Islam, and a co-author of two new books: Out of Darkness, Into Light: Spiritual Guidance in the Quran with Reflections from Jewish and Christian Sources, and Getting to the Heart of Interfaith: The Eye-Opening, Hope-Filled Friendship of a Pastor, a Rabbi, and a Sheikh.

*Jamal’s passion lies in interfaith community building. He remains rooted in his Islamic tradition and cultivates a “spaciousness” by being open to the beauty and wisdom of other faiths. By authentically and appreciatively understanding other paths, Jamal feels that he becomes a better Muslim. This spaciousness is not about conversion but about completion. Since 9/11 Jamal has been collaborating with Rabbi Ted Falcon and Pastor Don Mackenzie. Affectionately known as the Interfaith Amigos, they tour the country sharing the message of spiritual inclusivity.

*Sheikh Jamal has an abiding faith in the power of heart-to-heart connections to encompass differences and dissolve prejudices. He enjoys programs that celebrate life and unity through delight, laughter, and food. He has a private spiritual counseling practice serving individuals and couples, and is available for interfaith weddings and ceremonies. Jamal offers a variety of classes and workshops, including the popular “Blush of the Beloved,” a course in spiritual deepening and discernment drawing upon the practices, insights, and wisdom within Sufism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism.

· Snow routes are in good condition.

· There was no significant re-freezing of cleared roadways during the past 24 hours.

· There are no significant problems on the snow route network.

· The Alaskan Way Viaduct and the West Seattle High Rise Bridge are bare and dry.

· Focus is on reopening closed roads. The Seattle Police Department and SDOT are working to review roads currently closed and will update the list online.

· The City will continue the same level of deployed vehicles for the morning commute; focus will be on efforts to prevent re-freezing, address trouble spots on Level 3 routes, and bring more roads off the closed list.

· Because of the possibility of precipitation today leading to the formation of black ice tonight, some roads will remain closed.

· 24 hour shifts will continue through Thursday, November 25.

SEATTLE PUBLIC UTILITIES

· Garbage, yard waste and recycling collection have been postponed in Seattle for a second day, due to dangerous road conditions; icy side streets prohibit safe collections. There will be no residential services on Wednesday, November 24.

· Customers whose containers were not collected on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of this week will have them collected next week on their regularly scheduled pick-up day, and will be allowed to set out double their normal amount of garbage, yard waste and recycling at no additional charge.

POLICE

As a result of the traffic-related issues created by the snow and ice, the Seattle Police Department continues to manage snow-related incidents at the precinct level, reporting to the Emergency Operations Center. · All fire engines, trucks, medic units, and aid cars are chained up to allow access to emergencies.

PREPAREDNESS

· If Pipes Break or Freeze

Freezing weather is here. That means frozen and broken pipes are a possibility. If a water pipe breaks follow these steps:

o Immediately close the main shut-off valve to stop flooding. The shut-off valve can be indoors or outdoors – usually in a basement, crawlspace or garage. If you cannot turn off the main shutoff valve, Seattle Public Utilities customers can call (206) 386-1800 and a crew will turn off the water at the meter for a standard service charge.

o Call a plumber to repair or replace the damaged section of pipe as soon as possible.

o Don’t use hair dryers to thaw frozen pipes — you face the risk of electrocution!

News release just received from WSDOT:

With weather forecasts calling for ice across the state and snow in the Puget Sound and Southwest Washington, drivers should prepare for winter driving conditions overnight and into the Monday morning commute.

“Our crews are out and facing challenging conditions all over the state,” said Chris Christopher, Maintenance Director for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). “The temperatures are getting lower so any moisture will freeze overnight. And we expect snow and wind especially in the South Sound region near Olympia and south to Vancouver. We are pre-treating the roadways but drivers need to be prepared and drive for conditions.”

Christopher noted the wind chill will make it feel even colder. And there will also be wind and snow through much of Eastern Washington.

“The conditions look much better for travel later Monday and into Tuesday and Wednesday,” he said.

WSDOT is ready for the expected increased traffic for the Thanksgiving holiday. Drivers should be prepared , check travel and roadway conditions on WSDOT’s website and pack their winter weather supplies, including tire chains. For more winter driving tips, go to www.wsdot.wa.gov/winter.

Benefit for Sofia Goff and family at Kenyon Hall next Tuesday

One of several announcements we’ve received about the next fundraiser for former Café Revo proprietor Sofia Goff – this one is from Lou Magor at Kenyon Hall, which has donated space for the event next Tuesday:

Next Tuesday, November 23, from 2 to 10 P.M., we’re sponsoring an open house fundraiser for Sofia Goff, who until recently was the owner of Café Revo on Avalon.

Shortly after their restaurant opened, Sofia’s husband and business partner, Sean, passed away, leaving her with the decision of whether or not to continue. Thankfully, for all of us who had become accustomed to Revo’s uncommon cuisine, Sofia decided to give it a go.

Sadly, a few weeks ago, Sofia concluded that Café Revo must close its doors. Now she’s trying to pick up the pieces, and the folks at Kenyon Hall have jumped in to help.

Sofia is in danger of losing her home. The very thought of it brought tears to her eyes last week as she expressed the hope that her children, ages 10 and 16, having lost their father, and having watched their mother attempt unsuccessfully to save their family business, will somehow be able to continue to live in their home.

The open house at Kenyon Hall next Tuesday will be filled with good food and drink, provided by Sofia, her family, and several local restaurants, and continuous family-friendly entertainment, starting with Bob White and Andy Crow at the Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ, playing classy accompaniments to classic silent films, and continuing with a variety of entertainers, all donating their time to help Sofia and her family brighten this dark period in their lives.

As plans become firm, I’ll send … more information, including an entertainment schedule and items to be included in a special silent auction. In the meantime, please join me in holding good thoughts for Sofia and her kids, and consider coming to Kenyon Hall sometime during the day or evening next Tuesday to lend a hand.

Two events in the West Duwamish Greenbelt tomorrow (Friday), announced by the Nature Consortium:

Toddler tree planting 10-11:30: Join us for a toddler and preschool age-friendly tree planting in the West Duwamish Greenbelt, Seattle’s largest remaining forest. We will plant (and name!) tree saplings in an area recently cleared of invasive blackberries, discover other hidden treasures of this amazing natural wonder, and hear about the history and the future of the forest from Mark (buphalo) Tomkiewicz, Forest Restoration Director for Nature Consortium. We provide tools and will be accommodating of the little ones! Feel free to bring kid-sized shovels.

Monthly hike at 1 pm: Join us for a free public guided hike in the West Duwamish Greenbelt, Seattle’s largest remaining forest. We will explore the hidden treasures of this amazing natural wonder, and hear about the history and the future of the forest from Nancy Whitlock, Executive Director for the Nature Consortium (and forest steward). Difficulty is mild. Inexperienced hikers, seniors, and babies in backpacks are welcome. Special note to Parents of toddlers and preschoolers: please be warned that this hike can be challenging for you if you are with a preschooler or two who walk down the hills but want to be carried up.

Both events will start by meeting at the 14th SW/SW Holly trailhead; extreme rain cancels; bring your own water bottle; granola bars will be provided. To RSVP for either one (or both!) – they’re free, by the way – call 206- 923-0853 or e-mail Lisa@naturec.org.
