West Seattle 101: Stormwatching

Ask anyone in this city what they know about West Seattle and most people will say they’ve been to Alki Beach — in the summer. But most have yet to discover that there’s something special here during winter months too — spectacular storm watching.

West Seattle is a prime spot to watch squalls, whitecaps and windstorms as they come in from all directions. While some brave the storm outside, others chose to stay dry and protected in their cars. It’s safe as long as you stay clear of big trees and falling branches. And the best thing about this beach activity is that it requires zero SPF. However you might want to bring an umbrella meant for rain rather than sun and a beach bag full of warm clothes and cocoa.

Here are a few rather cold hot spots to catch the action:

CONSTELLATION PARK

(WSB video from the 10/13/07 windstorm) Where Alki Avenue turns into Beach Drive (near the lighthouse; map) you will find excellent views for both outdoor and car-style storm watching. And by the odd chance that the sky clears, look up and stargaze too; as the park name states, it’s appropriate.

ALKI BEACH

Brave the beach. Park, and watch in your car. Or, sit inside a cozy restaurant. Pegasus Pizza, Duke’s, Pepperdock and upstairs at Spud offer the great indoor viewing. And if you prefer a slightly more serene sea but bigger views, go around the corner to Salty’s for giant picture windows.

THE POINT AT LINCOLN PARK

Just in front of Colman Pool (directions) is the point at Lincoln Park where you can catch the storms from both sides. If it’s windy, hold onto your hats because this is area is very exposed to the elements. Parking is available at the lots along Fauntleroy Way or at the north end of the park near Lowman Beach.

SUNSET AVENUE IN NORTH ADMIRAL

This one (map) is a bit tough for parking, but has some of the best long-range views from atop the weatherworn cliff.
