West Seattleites on the airwaves

-The latest WS’er featured on KUOW Radio‘s “Sound Focus” show is Katy Shaw of The RollerBlog (one of the highlighted sites on this WSB page). Have a listen: Audio links are on this page. (Two weeks ago, the same show featured Jim Edwards of West Seattle Big Band; audio links here.)

–Our Other Blogs in West Seattle page, however, will be one blog shorter soon … public-radio guy and funny, funny writer John Moe is leaving West Seattle, moving someplace far to the east (and we don’t mean Issaquah), according to various mysterious posts on his blog Monkey Disaster.

-West Seattle-based Pirate Radio is about to make another fleeting appearance. We got word recently: “We will probably be on the air February 16th starting very late in the evening and run through the 24th or so. The reason for being on this week is that we are planning to carry the 11th annual Homelessness Marathon (www.homelessnessmarathon.org) in its entirety.” Our source says they’ll be at 87.7 FM, a frequency that might not be receivable by all radios.

–Lora Lewis at Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) was excited this morning about Hotwire’s star turn earlier this week on Evening Magazine, talking about the Valentine’s matchmaking contest. No video clip online at this point but the proof is on the links page. You can see photos of some of the “sweeties” who are participating at this page on the Hotwire site; find out more at the cafe, where it will all culminate with a gathering at 5 pm 2/16.

-Last but not least – tomorrow morning around 10 am, West Seattle’s state Sen. Joe McDermott will introduce a resolution in the Senate honoring J.P. Patches, aka Chris Wedes, who will be on hand for the occasion. This marks the 50th anniversary of the start of the J.P. Patches kids’ TV show, which ran for 23 years.

    I love J.P. Patches!!! I have the video of Ketchican the Animal Man’s infamous reading of Henny Penny. They cut to cartoons because he was lying on the floor, laughing so hard! because he couldn’t say … “cockey lockey” one more time!!! It was and IS hilarious!!!

    Hey! It was that pirate radio station that would kill my iPod’s FM transmitter whenever I was on a certain stretch of 35th. I always wondered what that was about.

    Sorry about interfering with your iTrip. We try to select a clear frequency and use filters so we don’t step on any other signal, but iPod transmitter users try to pick a clear signal, too.

    There could be other things that interfere with your iTrip. One could be FM DX (or “skip”). The atmosphere can cause very distant stations to come in even stronger than local ones. Don’t laugh- this has happened to me many times. One time growing up in the Midwest the entire dial was filled with Spanish language FM radio stations. I could see my favorite rock station’s tower if I stood on my roof- but could not listen to it that day.

    Another thing could be a Sirius satellite radio installed in a car. Some models have very strong FM transmitters in them, so much so that the FCC found them illegal and forced Sirius to try to recall them and discontinue that model. Would you return yours? They don’t get interference from your iTrip!

    There’s other free radio stations too- particularly the night time Spanish station on 93.7. There could even be other iTrip like devices that have a stronger signal. I run into that all the time with my iTrip. Your best bet would be to add an auxiliary input jack to your car stereo (as I am about to do). Most modern car stereos will have a jack on the back to control a CD changer- you can plug a special cable into this and create an auxiliary input jack that you can then plug your iPod into. You’ll get much better sound and no more interference from Radio 33! If you send me an e-mail to radio33@rock.com, I will send you a link to an eBay store I found that has these cables for a reasonable price.

    What is the world (or really, West Seattle) coming to when it loses really, really nice people like John & Jill Moe & family? Was there something we could have done better, cheaper, more loving? Woe are we! But…happy for them if they feel life will be better. (John? how can life be better without bacon at EZ Street)
