Midday photo break

Three photos to share – the first two are from among several more that came in this morning from WSB readers who, like us, were wowed by the eerie sky late yesterday (big thanks to them for sending their pix; send yours along any time); the third is a real-estate-related sign we spotted over the weekend. The “Flip My House” house is right down the street from me! In fact, when we were house hunting on Vashon, we considered buying it. We found a groovier one down the way though.

That first photo is gorgeous. I remember sitting in my livingroom, noticing the eerie light coming in from the skylight above. I went outside, and told my husband it was very unusual, like what you’d expect the sky to look like at the end of the world.

What isn’t obvious in that top picture is how blue the light was in the distance, towards the Cascades. It made the yellow clouds all that more eerie. Any meteorology buffs out there who can explain what causes these exceptionally yellow clouds? We’d get similar effects back East from time to time. It used to freak out my grandmother who saw a similar effect just before her town was hit with a tornado.

I saw that yellow light, too, and thought I was imagining things. It did look like a storm coming. The wind came up a little, but it wasn’t enough to account for that “end of the world” (Thanks, Sue) look.

Down my way in Westwood it felt like there was a pink tint over everything. Rose colored glasses? I was busy at the computer and it was startling enough for me to have my eyes drawn away from the screen; and yes even drawn away from the WSB! We have a smoke bush in our yard that is a wonderful reddish pink this time of year and it was surely popping in that light yesterday.
Hmmm, never thought about the end of the world.

I noticed the yellow too, and thought I was imagining it as well. I noticed it on another recent evening as well, probably within the last week.

Kinda weird against the Shell awnings across the street!

As for the real estate sign, isn’t Gold Beach where they plan on starting up the mining again? That could be why people are avoiding that home.

Can’t particularly explain the yellow, but it’s probably related: as the sun sets, light must travel through more atmosphere and “debris” to reach the eyes. The first wavelengths of light to be scattered by the atmospheric debris are the shorter (blue end of the spectrum). All that’s left for us to see is the red end of the spectrum…

saw that sign driving home last night..I alled thinking I could help since I have been bailing some owner out and picking project houses to rehab…but sadley just a crafty marketing tactic by a company not following the sign ordanance.

sunny atj….I have a client who lives on Vashon, and is a West Seattle real estate agent. I asked her about the sign today. She said the same sign is posted all over Vashon, and that the Gold Beach area is really one of the less desirable areas to buy a house…kind of a sub-division of cul de sacs, and houses that all look the same…..and that most people have a hard time selling houses there…
