West Seattle Weather Watch: No, hail was NOT in the forecast

There was a mention of a thunderstorm – but no hail. Crazy out there! Send pix if it gets to ground-covering status where you are …

So strange! It took it’s time getting here. I drove home through hail on 520 around 9:00…almost 2 hours later it hits WS!

Garage roof looks like it’s covered in snow! Back porch, too.

    Roxbury looks like it snowed.

10:58 PM – Thunder just heard in Arbor Heights

That didn’t rumble like thunder – sounded more like an explosion! Tho’ we did see the flash several seconds before…
Now the moon is peeking out of the clouds to the south… spooooky!

That’s what I thought MargL. Sounded like a firecracker discharged in a big barrel?!?

I was headed to bed at 10:30 and thought I heard hail outside, and sure enough, the deck was covered in it! (Dawson/Fauntleroy) Not used to seeing that here. About 10:45 or so I heard something that sounded like thunder, but it was unusual and I wondered for a minute if it was a transformer blowing and that there was a power outage somewhere.
Glad that didn’t seem to be the case – sure I would’ve read it here. :) Also heard what sounded like a helicopter, but I was already in bed so didn’t get up to check any of it.

I appreciate the input regarding the “noise” 10-26-09 late in the evening. I am looking for additional details as to the nature of the loud noise. If it was indeed thunder, then why did it happen only once? It sounded a lot like something blew up, nothing in the local news. Anyone have any more details? Thanks

Thunder/lightning can happen only once. Seen that a million times. Will be doublechecking with City Light today though.

We still had hail/ice on our lawns and cars this morning at the top of Gatewood hill. I’m bummed I fell asleep so early last night- I love watching/listening to storms! The hail did wake me up a bit, but I fell right back to sleep somehow.

There was only one flash of lightning around 11pm and 14 seconds later a boom of thunder that was a sharp, quick BANG! as opposed to the big, resounding BOOM! we’re used to.

Trust the person who hates thunder and lightning. :)

THe hail felt like it lasted forever. It was incredibly loud as well. Still on the lawn this morning when I left for work.

Hail woke me up, thought someone was attempting to get into the bedroom windows. Then I realized the noise was coming from all around the house, my sleep fogged brain had trouble comprehending what was happening and where all the noise was coming from. Kept me up for about 15 minutes until it stopped, I’ve never heard hail hit the house and windows so hard.

In Burien about 11:00pm we heard a very odd boom. I called my cousin over on Lake Meridian and he heard it too. Also spoke to people in Emunclaw and Federal Way and they heard it. I wonder could it possibly have been a meteor or perhaps a sonic boom. Does anyone know yet what it was?

  • glenn October 27, 2009 (8:51 pm)

I heard the boom in Kent and my daughter in Renton heard it. The time was 11:02, shook the house and blew a circuit breaker. It did not appear a thunder. I quess it was a bolide because of the flash of light some saw.

I have been trying to research the loud boom all day. Not your typical thunder, in fact very unlike thunder. One loud boom, no rumble. We are in Covington and it woke my whole family from sleep. Friends in Renton, Issaquah and Burien also heard it. It set off car alarms in Burien. I would explain it more like a sonic boom than thunder. Curious to know more.
