West Seattle snow: Sunday afternoon (etc.) updates

(photo courtesy Katie M – send pix to editor@westseattleblog.com)
Find morning/afternoon updates, photos, comments here. Note that we have added a Sea-Tac webcam to the right sidebar for airportgoers. Meantime, we launch the afternoon with a LONG citywide update from the city’s Emergency Ops Center – it’s now posted on the city website (read it here) – note the mention that MONDAY TRASH SERVICE IS LIKELY TO BE POSTPONED – also, Hiawatha Community Center is open till 5; West Seattle (Admiral) Library is open; Southwest Pool is open (though lessons are canceled). And this excerpt re: roads:

City Transportation crews are continuing to clear streets after Saturday night’s storm. SDOT currently has trucks plowing, sanding and de-icing city streets. Three of those trucks are devoted solely to the West Seattle Bridge and the Alaskan Way Viaduct. With more precipitation expected, clearing work will continue throughout the day citywide. The department’s primary focus will be principal arterials, bridges and other elevated road structures, streets near hospitals, and bus routes. Twenty one SDOT workers are cleaning sidewalks outside of hospitals for safe access.

.

1:14 PM UPDATE: Dasher the reindeer is at Capers. So if you’re going to The Junction, stop in there as well as getting your Santa photo at Cupcake Royale (till 3:30, and as mentioned in morning coverage, Santa is at Westwood Village till 4 pm):

Snowing like CRAZY again – just in time for the football game on TV, of course, so Seattle looks more like Green Bay … fitting for Coach Holmgren’s last game. Meantime – DL Byron from BikeHugger reports phone trouble on 56th SW, getting “all circuits are busy.” We will check with Qwest’s media unit about trouble.

1:27 PM UPDATE: Rey just sent some photos from around our Upper Fauntleroy ‘hood – thanks! First one, the stairs down from Cloverdale toward the Fauntleroy area, looking south:

And the official WSB HQ intersection, California/Thistle (but it’s Rey’s photo), looking north on Cali:

Uphill on Thistle, looking west (and sideways) to California:

Alkichick sends this link to her gallery of Alki photos taken “all week.” Meantime – HEAVY SNOW OUT THERE. From Arbor Heights, Darren sends this photo of 35th SW looking south from 105th:

1:43 PM UPDATE: Another restaurant report – Janie Pelligrini writes to say LA RUSTICA WILL BE OPEN TONIGHT! Vickie says The Bohemian is open for coffee till 3 pm. (We’d reported last night that they canceled brunch for today.) And reiterating, Hotwire is open till 5 pm. We will reinstate the “who’s open” list of quick links atop this post in a minute. Also, just in from JayDee on Alki via text message:

Celtic swell opens at 6; alki cafe open;alki bakery closes at 4; starbucks closes at 4; bamboo bar open until 10; pegasus closed? No note on the door. Cactus open to 9. Urban market is open. A 56 pulled up but cannot tell what the route is. Tully’s open, but hours are dependent on customers coming in.

And Shell just texted that Nail Time on California SW is open. Back to Alki – Alkichick’s pix include this one, probably the only birds we DON’T have to worry about in this weather?

In North Delridge, Jessie at Skylark says brunch continues till 3 pm. OK, there is an alarming headline on the P-I saying SIX MORE INCHES OF SNOW expected by tonight. Checking the forecasts for any verification of that. (…) Here’s the National Weather Service’s late-morning forecast. Up to 2″ today and up to 4″ tonight DO add up to six inches. That requires a cute pet photo before we get back to road conditions – this is Ellen‘s puggle Coco in Gatewood:

Ellen also sent this photo looking north on California all the way toward Morgan Junction and past to The Junction:

And in comments, word that another WSB sponsor, Alki Bike and Board, is renting snowshoes. Not sure where you get a snowmobile, but Bruce sent this photo from 34th SW:

2:18 PM UPDATE: From The Wilchers, a High Point pond panorama:

In comments – word that West Seattle Cellars is open till 5 pm. Meantime, a snow-creation photo – from Anne at Ventana Construction (WSB sponsor), left to right, it’s Logan, Jackson and Della with their newest friend:

We’re just getting some Admiral District photos in – this one from Kim:

This one’s from Lena:

Also from the Admiral District, via Twitter, WSB sponsor Click! Design That Fits sends this update:

Walking in the snow, seeing people ski to the store, feeling like we’re in a European village. Click! is open until 6pm and loving the snow

And if you can’t make it to the store, they have online shopping too. Here’s Lena’s photo looking in that general direction (Click! is by Blockbuster):

And back to Kim’s pix, Admiral Safeway:

2:43 PM UPDATE: Now as the snow intensifies (! new forecast within an hour or so!) – from Lori Ho at 16th/Thistle in Highland Park, Gavin Ho “standing proudly next to his snow fort”:

Another update from Capers in The Junction – last day to bring gifts to the Giving Tree for Hickman House. Remember that when this calms down, our local nonprofits are likely going to need a LOT of extra help – we will gather info as best we can to let everybody know how to pitch in.

2:55 PM UPDATE: JayDee toured Alki, as mentioned earlier (see his report above on who’s open/closed) – here are some of the pix he sent, starting with The Statue and Alki Cafe:

Admiral looking downhill/west from 59th:

And here’s another Alki icon – Whale Tail Park‘s namesake looks more like a beluga than its usual self, today:

Also from Alki, a crosscountry skier (and ferry) snapped by Brian:

Reminder about the WSB Traffic cams page (click the tab atop any WSB page) if anyone calls you from the Seahawks game asking about conditions getting home. Also, SDOT updated via Twitter that it’s now clearing routes away from the stadium to ensure fans’ safe travel home. We’re going out for a quick walk around the block to just shake off glued-to-chair syndrome before nightfall.

3:41 PM UPDATE: Not sure whether technically that’s freezing rain or sleet falling right now, but it’s little tiny ice crystals. Also, we finally get the “creme brulee” description that’s been going around to describe what happened earlier today – if you go out and walk through unshoveled snow, you will come to a layer of ice, 1/4″ to 1/8″ thick, which you can lift out in sharp-edged sheets:

Also, this advisory just in from SDOT:

With yet another wave of snow arriving, the Seattle
Department of Transportation (SDOT) continues to aggressively plow,
de-ice and sand across the city. With additional inches of snow hitting
roadways, the department continues to advise that motorists use caution
and not drive if it can be avoided. If motorists must drive, they are
advised to reduce their speeds, transition carefully from side streets
to arterials and give snowplows ample room to operate.

The department’s focus remains principal arterials, bridges and other
elevated road structures, streets near hospitals, and bus routes. A
particular emphasis has been placed on outbound travel routes from Qwest
Field. SDOT currently has its entire winter response fleet of 27 trucks
plowing, sanding and de-icing city streets. Four of those trucks are
devoted solely to the West Seattle Bridge and the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
Due to icy conditions, the South Lake Union line of the Seattle
Streetcar is no longer in operation.

Also an update from Sea-Tac Airport:

Alaska and Horizon have suspended service due to severe winter weather and deteriorating conditions. Airport is open and other carriers are continuing operations. There is sufficient deicing fluid for the airfield through Monday and SeaTac is sharing with surrounding airports. Aircraft deicing supply trucks are stuck on the east side of the pass. There are a significant number of passengers stranded in the airport. Alaska has instructed all passengers who live in the area to go home and rebook their flights online or by phone.

Sharonn Meeks sent a pic with word that The Mount has had enough snow-clearing to access relatively safely:

Update from the city Parks Department:

Seattle Parks and Recreation’s School Age Care Winter Break Camps at all community
centers will be closed on Monday, Dec. 22, due to weather conditions. A child care hotline is available for additional updates on Winter Break Camp operation. Call 206-684-7123 for Hotline Updates.

Early morning lap swims for Monday, Dec. 22, are closed at Medgar Evers Pool and Southwest Pool, but these facilities will open at their standard operating time. All other pools that normally have early morning lap swims, including Ballard, Evans, Queen Anne and Meadowbrook will be open for this use. Madison and Rainier Beach pools will have normal operating hours.

All other Seattle Parks and Recreation facilities will have normal operating hours on Monday. These include community centers, pools, environmental learning centers, Amy Yee Tennis Center and Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center. Regularly scheduled programming has been canceled, but drop-in use of these facilities is available.

Public golf courses, including Jackson Park, Interbay, West Seattle and Jefferson Park are closed for golf, but are open for sledding.

New forecast posted within the hour – includes the previously mentioned “up to 6″ new” through tonight, then snow showers in almost every daypart through Tuesday night, when “snow likely” is the phrase. Read it here.
In comments, update from Jessie at Skylark, where usually there’s all-ages live music on Sunday nights (and live music SIX nights a week):

Two out of three bands have understandably cancelled tonight, but we are still planning on staying open. If you have cabin fever in the Delridge neighborhood feel free to stop by for hot food and/or warming beverages. We close at 11pm on Sundays and are all ages/full bar with ID. Everyone’s disappointed we didn’t get the expected “slightly warmer weather and rain” reprieve…but bands are all rescheduling for early ‘09 so it’s not so bad.

Just created a separate post for a harbor seal photographed at Lincoln Park. Thanks for all the photos — keep ’em coming, we’re still catching up. Snowing heavily again where we are, by the way. TV reporter at Sea-Tac says Alaska may not get more de-icer till tomorrow (as posted above, they’ve suspended all flights anyway).

4:14 PM UPDATE: Metro’s Linda Thielke is doing a phone interview on TV noting this is the TENTH day of snow operations. We are making a separate post with quick links and other info (closures/changes) that you might want to refer to frequently without scrolling back thru the WSB running coverage – let us know – editor@westseattleblog.com – if there’s anything in particular you’d like to see in such a list. One of them, of course, will be the Metro reroute/canceled/suspended list. Meantime – levity of course is a saving grace (or however that saying goes) – Bridgette posted on Facebook, “Now announcing the opening of the West Seattle ski area … lifts under construction.” Jim and Laurie sent this next photo with the subject line “Pigeon Point Hummer!” and we thought perhaps it would be a big ol’ vehicle munching up a hill – but no – it’s those little guys we’ve been discussing:

4:25 PM UPDATE: Here’s the latest from Metro regarding tomorrow morning:

King County Metro Transit will be operating approximately half of its regular service Monday morning, Dec. 22, because of ongoing difficult travel conditions due to heavy snowfall over the weekend. Also, roads throughout King County are expected to be dangerously icy Monday morning.

Please check the Metro Online website before you leave home to see if your bus route is operating and if it is on snow routing.

As it enters its 10th day of snow operations, Metro plans to operate with a level of service similar to last Friday. On Monday morning, about half of Metro’s and Sound Transit’s bus service in King County will be temporarily suspended due to weather and road conditions. If the roads clear during the day, Metro plans to add more service on the routes in operation.

Metro’s operations have been impacted by the weather throughout King County, but the hilly streets and amount of snowfall inside the city of Seattle have made travel in the city unusually difficult. Also, in many areas travel lanes have been restricted, which is slowing down both buses and general-purpose traffic.

Bus passengers should be aware that travel conditions can change quickly, and this list of disrupted service may be revised at any time due to weather and road conditions. In some locations, where roads are impassable for large buses, Metro will be operating chained shuttles.

In order to safely transport as many passengers as possible, Metro is focusing on providing bus service on cleared highways and arterial roads, and to major transit centers and park-and-ride lots.

Passengers should be prepared to board buses at major transit centers, flat arterials, or at the top or bottom of hills. Please dress warmly, wear appropriate footwear, and be prepared to wait. The buses that are running are expected to be significantly delayed.

This transit plan will continue until weather and road conditions improve, which means almost all bus service will be significantly limited. Metro appreciates everyone’s patience, and reminds customers that safety for passengers and bus drivers is the agency’s No. 1 concern.

Information about bus status is available on Metro’s Ice & Snow page, but conditions are changing rapidly. You can also call the Metro Customer Information Office at (206) 553-3000, but call volumes are high and there may be a wait to talk to a CIO representative. People should closely monitor the latest weather and traffic reports for information about travel conditions.

4:31 PM UPDATE: In comments, Ellen mentioned a festive atmosphere in The Junction. Here’s pictorial proof:

However, she reports, nobody was going to let Santa cut in line for coffee at Cupcake Royale (where Santa photos are over for the day now – thanks to everybody who made it down to The Junction!):

Speaking of Christmas fun, Kate e-mails about walking from High Point to the Admiral District for the free show this morning of “A Christmas Story.” She says “lots of people were out to laugh at Ralphie” and she also sent back sights along the way, including this “snow dragon”:

4:49 PM UPDATE: A reminder from Angelina:

Can you please remind people that it is illegal to go snowmobiling and four-by-ing in parks? We have had people driving through High Point Park and it tears up the ground underneath… Not to mention it is a safety hazard.

5:27 PM UPDATE: Started a separate post to be a standing list of hopefully helpful links. Bernie pointed out that Amtrak isn’t getting much mention but it’s had trouble too – this alert notes its Northwest service was completely canceled today. If you have a suggestion for additional helpful links, we’ll continue to build that list through the night, so please leave a comment.

5:41 PM UPDATE: From Jenny on Genesee Hill – another example of that ice layer we mentioned earlier (the “creme brulee” effect as some have described it):

From Jim and Sharon:

Found Dec. 20 on Pigeon Point: 1 pair cross country skis boots and poles. 935-1532

The WSB Forums are usually a good place for lost/found (and we post lost/found dogs/cats/etc. on our Pets page – e-mail us any time), BUT in these circumstances the front page is where many people are hanging out so we’re noting it here.

5:54 PM UPDATE: From Amy at Delridge/Thistle, a couple photos – starting with this one looking north on Thistle at dusk:

And the Longfellow Creek/Thistle Greenspace P-patch, a view we haven’t seen so far:

Via Twitter, County Executive Ron Sims sends word that Cliff Mass filed a 5 pm weather update. Cliff says this band of snow will move through by mid-evening and that there shouldn’t be anything much behind it, for now. Want to be amused? Check out how excited we got over a bit of a flurry last Christmas.

6:41 PM UPDATE: Will be switching over to an evening post soon. From Twitter, word that Beveridge Place Pub in Morgan Junction “is packed.”

This is important: There is word of some power outages here and there – not in Seattle so far – because of heavy snow taking out branches and then lines. So be sure you know where your outage-related items are. So far, we have heard (not confirmed via official sources) about some trouble in Olympia, north Vashon (via comments), and the Eastside.

Via Twitter, word that the National Weather Service noted record daily snowfall at Sea-Tac today – 3 inches, the most ever on December 21, breaking 2.6 inches on 12/21/67.

7:01 PM: Before we close this post down – one more cute kid pic – The Andersens in Arbor Heights, in fact, e-mailed this with the explanation that it’s one of their “cute kids eating snow.”

The Sunday evening post has now begun – please join us there!

Yay! The snow is falling again. I am thinking about giving up on trying to keep the walk and steps to the front door clear.

  • dustyhawk December 21, 2008 (1:34 pm)

Where is the best sledding around Morgan Junction? Any streets you all see being used now?

  • BG December 21, 2008 (1:35 pm)

I really need to get to work tomorrow, I wish this snow and freezing would freaking stop

  • JenY December 21, 2008 (1:37 pm)

Comment on the stairs photo above: I think those are actually the stairs at Farwell/Cloverdale/39th looking south toward Barton.

Snowing like gangbusters here, just east of Fauntleroy and north of the ferry dock. Temp has been at 32.4 for several hours now. The sledders have mostly gone back inside, but I can see cars on Fauntleroy. If this continues, they won’t be out for long either. Glad we got all those groceries on Friday!

  • Frank December 21, 2008 (1:37 pm)

Has anyone tried getting to the airport recently? Any updates on the route via Roxbury to 509? I have to take my housemate to the airport at 3pm.

  • WSB December 21, 2008 (1:39 pm)

Thanks JenY. I actually meant “the Fauntleroy area” but I see I did erroneously type north instead of south.

  • Patrick December 21, 2008 (1:43 pm)

BG I hear ya – I haven’t been in since Wednesday and I only need to get to Pioneer Square. Wish it wasn’t such a chore to get a bus.

  • Scott December 21, 2008 (1:48 pm)

LOTS of moisture on the way:

I don’t know if I’m going to feel wistful anymore when I hear the song “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” anymore……. ; )

  • zero-to-life in West Seattle December 21, 2008 (1:55 pm)

First sign of cabin fever, repeating words twice in the same sentence!

  • Mary December 21, 2008 (2:03 pm)

It’s a White Christmas, already. Enough, already. It’s White Enough, ALREADY!

Cabin fever, in full mode … thank heavens for power, Internet, and WSB.

  • Holly December 21, 2008 (2:08 pm)

dustyhawk, we’ve had lots of sledders on our hill! 2 am last night there was snowboarding, skiing, and sledding still going on! Othello Street east of california.

  • IG December 21, 2008 (2:09 pm)

Does anyone know what buses are still running out of West Seattle to downtown (particularly for tomorrow’s commute)?

  • alison December 21, 2008 (2:10 pm)

Don’t know if this has been reported but Alki Bike and Board are renting out snowshoes. I think the sign said $5 an hour.

  • Tracy D. December 21, 2008 (2:12 pm)

6 more inches????? Holy Crap! When will it end? This is crazy. Oh…and there is some good sledding going on behind the tennis courts near Lincoln Park (across from the 76 station).

  • Alice December 21, 2008 (2:13 pm)

I updated the map with these new photos. I’m tempted to just turn the whole thing red with the snow and freezing rain, but I won’t. I’ll keep updating what people post.

    -Alice

  • TomD December 21, 2008 (2:16 pm)

West Seattle Cellars is open today until 5 pm, no matter how deep the snow gets. And we still have Italian wines open to taste from yesterday’s tasting.

  • Caitlin December 21, 2008 (2:22 pm)

Does anyone else find it extremely irritating that the City is devoting a bunch of plowers and de-icers to the roads leading to Qwest Field for a football game when there are still tons of people stuck in their homes? ARGH!

  • P December 21, 2008 (2:26 pm)

Caitlin, I AGREE! Let the NFL pay to hire private companies……

  • P December 21, 2008 (2:27 pm)

OH and another reminder, if you have to be out driving, TURN ON YOUR HEADLIGHTS…….

  • WChood December 21, 2008 (2:28 pm)

Anyone else predicting a baby boom in oh – say 9 months???

  • Caitlin December 21, 2008 (2:31 pm)

P, Yes! I saw so many vehicles yesterday, the majority of them white or grey, with no headlights on. So dangerous and very frustrating!

  • ericak December 21, 2008 (2:31 pm)

An SUV is stuck on Alaska between Fauntleroy and 41st (in front of Jiffy Lube). Otherwise, bars a quite busy in the Junction.

  • WSB December 21, 2008 (2:32 pm)

I recommend driving with headlights at all times. Some countries just call ’em “running lights” and it’s automatic in the vehicles.

  • WSB December 21, 2008 (2:33 pm)

IG – the only official source is the Metro adverse weather page – it’s linked atop the morning/afternoon post and will be in this one eventually –
    http://metro.kingcounty.gov/up/rr/adverseweather.html

  • P December 21, 2008 (2:34 pm)

WSB, I agree, I wish they would make it a law that lights had to be on at all times. It would make it so much easier!

  • Darren December 21, 2008 (2:34 pm)

Caitlin—- Yes I do!!! Can someone please turn off the Snow Making Machine !!!! I’ve been in the house too long and need to get back to work tomorrow. Been in the house since last Monday !!!

  • duluc December 21, 2008 (2:35 pm)

I have a potential problem that I’m not sure what to do about. Someone abandoned their car in front of my driveway, blocking my way out. I’m not planning on going anywhere today, but hope to do so tomorrow. The car has been there for at least 5 hours (possibly overnight-I’m not sure when it was left there) and I’m worried that its owner isn’t planning to retrieve it anytime soon. Is there some non-emergency number I can call to report this? Any advice?

By the way, I’m a long-time reader of this blog (never posted until now). I’d like to add my thanks for all that you do to provide us with news – especially under such trying circumstances. You are an incredible resource!

  • Colleen December 21, 2008 (2:37 pm)

still snowing here at Calif & Juneau–and a reminder to all of us who living in apartment buildings–remember when turning on music or tv that we’re ALL stuck inside. Be respectful, not everyone wants to hear the baseline of your music for hours.

  • Mags December 21, 2008 (2:38 pm)

I just looked at the doppler..ugh, more snow. Walked up to the junction, most stores open and everyone friendly and quite busy. Had several cups of coffee including a nudge at Shadowland on the way home, picked up some pie at shoofly and some bouche de noel at Bakery Noveau. the gals at hotwire were their usual funny selves (but apparently the phone was ringing off the hook with people asking if they were open)

I was really ticked off at the cross country skiers who were not yielding to pedestrians on the sidewalk..probably the same when they bicycle!! The snow in my front yard (drifts) are up to my knees..I am warm and cozy, but wondering how my commute will be tomorrow.

  • GenHillOne December 21, 2008 (2:39 pm)

Maybe I hadn’t had enough coffee yet, but this is taking us by surprise now, yes? I don’t remember a thing about more snow in the forecast this morning. I actually thought they said it was going to warm up (relatively) in the next 24 hours. There are a lot of people in sweatshirts at the game; doesn’t look like they expected to get wet, even if you do adjust for the rabid fan factor.

  • A December 21, 2008 (2:39 pm)

We drive with our lights on all day everyday. Although we once owned a Beetle with the running lights that didn’t turn off and we were the only ones driving through the neighborhood with Christmas lights with our lights on! Everyone turned them off but we couldn’t! :)

  • WSB December 21, 2008 (2:41 pm)

Duluc – call the police nonemergency line for starters. It’s on the Crime Watch page in a little set-aside box. I *think* it’s 684-5011.

  • Dustin December 21, 2008 (2:43 pm)

I just heard jet take off from Sea-Tac so some flights must still be happening. Oh….there went another. They must be taking advantage of the snow break happening right now (i.e. it’s not coming down quite as heavy in Shorewood).

  • BG December 21, 2008 (2:43 pm)

There is a guy in the intersection of Belvidere and Admiral shoveling snow from the middle of the road…while I understand his reason for doing it (so cars can make a left out of or onto Belvidere), I don’t think it’s probably the brightest thing to do.

  • Mollsworth December 21, 2008 (2:44 pm)

FYI, Caffe Ladro also open until 10!
Why, oh why did we not buy a house within close walking distance of anything except Pizza Time?
We are relatively new to the area, anyone know of any hidden gems in the Holden surroundings? We are between 35th and Delridge.

And ditto on the lights…just saw someone blasting down Holden in a whiteish car with no lights on!

  • AlkiRagdoll December 21, 2008 (2:46 pm)

Alice – thanks for keeping this up to date. I must get out tomorrow early AM and may plan my escape tonight to the airport and stay in a hotel, just so I wont miss my flight. So your map will be invaluable. I have an ailing father will be trying to get to the east coast to be with him.

  • P December 21, 2008 (3:01 pm)

Huge fluffy white flakes in the U district!

  • Dan December 21, 2008 (3:01 pm)

    Alice —

18th SW is passable with AWD/chains, though I’ve seen snowmobiles and ATVs running up and down it. SW Dawson up to 16th is pretty much impassable without chains or AWD — my 2WD car with chains barely made it up to 16th SW.

16th has a lot of snow on it and it’s another AWD/chains road. I did see some chowderhead pass me in his AWD Lancer Evo going about 30 or so down 16th. Alas, I didn’t see a “moron-vs-ditch” accident soon thereafter.

16th gets better as you get towards Holden, at least it’s been used more. Otherwise, most of the side streets in this area have 6″ of snow on them.

    Thanks for updating the map!

  • Christy December 21, 2008 (3:02 pm)

Hang in there, guys! It has to end sometime!!!

A friend of mine in Belltown just called to say that the drivers of two cars in an accident came to blows over it.

    Cabin fever can be ugly!

  • Sue December 21, 2008 (3:03 pm)

I’ve been seeing a few 128 metro buses coming down Fauntleroy (past Dawson) this afternoon – starting to wonder if this is the reroute for it.

  • Fred-e December 21, 2008 (3:08 pm)

Just drove from Highpoint to Highline medical clinic in Burien. Went down Silvan Way > Delridge > Ambaum > 152nd > 1st. Roads were pretty thick with snow, but manageable.

The greatest danger out there, and I’m not being facetious, is the drivers. Whether it be from the false sense of security that people get from chains and/or AWD/4×4, or people who think it’s acceptable to park in the middle of the road, there are some seriously challenged drivers with questionable judgment on the road.

I know it’s already been said, but be really careful if you have to be out and about.

  • mayjune December 21, 2008 (3:09 pm)

duluc – I think it’s okay to call the police. RCW 46.61.570(1)(b) makes it illegal for people to park in front of others’ driveways…

  • def December 21, 2008 (3:11 pm)

Mollsworth wrote: We are relatively new to the area, anyone know of any hidden gems in the Holden surroundings? We are between 35th and Delridge.

It’s not hidden, but you’re not that far from Westwood Village — it’s only 6-7 blocks south of Holden.

Is the coffee shop on 35th just north of Jim’s Deli (between Webster and Othello) still open? That’s just a couple blocks north of Holden.

  • Diane December 21, 2008 (3:12 pm)

yes Caitlin, I am furious with Metro, and beyond furious to hear about football shuttles
    ~
I lost half my income this week because Metro totally failed me; on Fri, first bus canceled, 2nd bus no show, hitched a ride downtown from bus stop; waited 3 hrs for third bus that never came; metro phone busy, no way to get info; stood out in 20 degrees for 4 hrs, never able to get to work; came home exhausted; couldn’t even get paycheck from earlier in week
    ~
now at home, out of food but don’t feel safe walking up to store; haven’t seen a snow plow here all day
    ~
already so frustrated/depressed about losing so much money from loss of work, because buses never came; so to hear Metro is shuttling football fans, after hundreds of people could not get to work; really furious
    ~
I’d venture to guess that most of the folks stranded by buses, trying to get to work, do not get paid snow/holiday/vacation/sick/pto; most of these folks are barely getting by on low wages; 1 week of lost income can be just enough to cause severe hardship
    ~
if they can provide shuttles for football fans, where the hell were they when hundreds of people were stranded downtown trying to get to work?
    ~
Praying buses will get me to work next 2 days; since realizing I cannot rely on metro, I negotiated with client to pick me up downtown tomorrow, but I still need a bus to get me downtown; or I may have to hitch hike again from Admiral?
    ~
seems to me city/metro priorities in times of emergency are way off

  • WSNursery December 21, 2008 (3:12 pm)

We’re still open at West Seattle Nursery with a fresh batch of hot apple cider brewing! We have lots of trees out in the yard and many nice ornaments and gifts in the store. We’ll be open our normal hours today – until 8PM. We’ll also be open at 9AM tomorrow for you last minute gift shoppers out there.

  • Alice December 21, 2008 (3:13 pm)

    Dan and Fred-e Thanks!

    AlkiRagDoll – Thanks!

  • duluc December 21, 2008 (3:14 pm)

Thanks for the response about my abandoned vehicle problem! I just got off the phone with the local cops and they said they’ll take care of it (although it might be a while…).

  • P December 21, 2008 (3:14 pm)

Coffee shop at 35th and Webster is not open yet. The one on the East Side of the street is going to become another hair salon, and the new one Coffee at the Heights on the west side (Olympic Manor Apartments) is not going to be open till late January.

  • P December 21, 2008 (3:17 pm)

Oh, and 2 metro drivers were just telling me that the supervisors at Metro are in over their heads and they are having a hard time trying to make decisions. Sounds like everyone should be contacting King County and Seattle council memebers to see what kind of contingency plan will be put in place after this huge mess. One driver told me his supervisor told him to just make up a route!

  • Karlynn December 21, 2008 (3:24 pm)

I’m really needing to escape to the store, either Target at Westwood or Thriftway on Cali, but not sure which one has better passage from California and Thistle??

Anyone been up the hill on Thistle to 35th or the hill from Thriftway south on California and know what the conditions are getting up?? I would be grateful for any info.

I managed to make it home from Southcenter last night around 6pm, it was a nightmare, but after two tries made it up the hill on Thistle from 35th to Cali, but not sure if it’s better or worse now?

Thanks for all of the info, everyone!!

  • BG December 21, 2008 (3:26 pm)

Diane I couldn’t agree with you more. The reason they probably are more concerned with fans getting to the stadium instead of us getting to work (I also was away from work all last week and I don’t have a telecommute option) is because us getting to work doesn’t bring in revenue.

  • GreenSpaces December 21, 2008 (3:26 pm)

I haven’t worked in over two months. I guess that is a blessing now, since I do not have to be anywhere. Except now I have two interviews, one on Monday and one on Tuesday, that are in jeapardy because of road conditions. I do not drive in this weather, even in a MINI, because I don’t trust the other yahoos out there and can’t afford auto damage. My husband said he would try to work from home and take me, but if we get the projected additional 6 inches, I don’t think I want to risk his car either! It’s a tough world right now!

  • jessiesk December 21, 2008 (3:33 pm)

Two out of three bands have understandably cancelled tonight, but we are still planning on staying open. If you have cabin fever in the Delridge neighborhood feel free to stop by for hot food and/or warming beverages. We close at 11pm on Sundays and are all ages/full bar with ID. Everyone’s disappointed we didn’t get the expected “slightly warmer weather and rain” reprieve…but bands are all rescheduling for early ’09 so it’s not so bad.

  • AliBet December 21, 2008 (3:35 pm)

I live on Delridge and have noticed that the #120 bus runs consistently, even late last night.

  • Megen December 21, 2008 (3:37 pm)

A Bus is stuck at Alaska St. and 35th Ave. SW. Haven’t seen a plow yet.

  • JenV December 21, 2008 (3:42 pm)

Seahawks just beat the crap of of Favre and the Jets!

  • P December 21, 2008 (3:45 pm)

    megen, south or north bound?

  • Sue December 21, 2008 (3:48 pm)

Diane, where are you located? There’s probably someone reading who’s close enough to you to get something to you if you’re out to food, or who can help you get to a store.

  • ellenater December 21, 2008 (3:48 pm)

We just got back from the Junction. It was AWESOME. I’m sorry for you guys who are stuck indoors. If you live in our route we’ll take you with us next time. We got chains yesterday and our little Toyota did awesome. A few cars (without chains) stalled and had to be pushed. I saw lots of people helping with that so that by the time we got there we weren’t needed. Easy Street closed the cafe’ at 2:30. They just resanded the Gatewood Hill. No problems at all on California from the Junction down to the hill. People were super festive and happy. The game is on at Elliott Bay and Ama Ama is open. Most of the Junction stores are still open. I love the snow. As long as we don’t lose our power. The only thing we are missing is a sled! We also visited Santa at Cupcake Royale. I’ve never seen so many people smiling and am again feeling lucky to live in this amazing community! Let. It. Snow. :)

  • dcagen December 21, 2008 (3:52 pm)

The Mission at Admiral Junction is OPEN and plans on being all night. Heard the Admiral Pub is closed. If you’ve got cabin fever, no better way to cure it…

  • BG December 21, 2008 (3:56 pm)

You know, for me it’s not a case of “cabin fever”, it’s a case of worrying about getting to my job. I can get out and walk around the neighborhood to get some fresh air, but I can’t walk to my job in Tacoma.

  • Darren December 21, 2008 (4:03 pm)

Snowing hard again in Arbor Heights. Guess I’m not getting to work tomorrow. CABIN FEVER !!!! SO DONE WITH IT

  • Megen December 21, 2008 (4:03 pm)

P- It was headed Southbound (trying to get up the hill so I am assuming its southbound! Still new to the area. Trying to orient myself)

  • Spud December 21, 2008 (4:05 pm)

Just drove across the bridge, to Fauntleroy and then Alaska… Streets are getting nasty!

  • Preggo December 21, 2008 (4:10 pm)

My baby is due Jan. 1. I’m really hoping he stays put till after all this stuff is done. It’s been agonizing watching the forecast change for the worse, again. Many thanks to everyone on this blog for keeping the road situations up to date. We would need to go to Capitol Hill for delivery. Wish us luck, maybe baby will stay put long enough for the weather to return to something resembling “normal!”

  • FabulousEm December 21, 2008 (4:10 pm)

Ok, this crap was pretty two days ago. Now, I’m just annoyed! Snowing like crazy in Westwood. Cars are zooming by on Trenton, though. Seems like the snow is pretty crumbly. Oy….

  • datamuse December 21, 2008 (4:12 pm)

Just got back from shoveling my driveway and it’s really coming down in Highland Park. I drove back from Fall City earlier today with no problems, but this is a heavier, wetter snow than the previous snowfalls, which is going to mean more ice on the streets. Be careful out there.

  • lincolnparkwalker December 21, 2008 (4:20 pm)

wow. i am really wondering about morning flights to seatac. i just booked a towncar/SUV–the only thing i could find at this point. i live on genesee hill and the towncar is picking me up at 8am. anyone else needing a ride to the airport and want to share a towncar/SUV?

  • Paula December 21, 2008 (4:20 pm)

Aarrgghh! Alaska Airlines just cancelled all flights in and out of SeaTac – lack of de-icer. Daughter due to return home in the morning from Pasadena is now stuck in California. What a bummer!

  • Megen December 21, 2008 (4:31 pm)

Just saw the first plow of the day on 35th ave sw and dawson…. you can tell the fb game is done.

  • JoB December 21, 2008 (4:34 pm)

I came south on 35th from Alaska at about 3:45.. passing the stuck bus. I barely made it up the hill and home.

if you have to be out, be sure you have chains.

    i passed stuck 4WDs.

  • smshepard December 21, 2008 (4:35 pm)

** Sizzle ** I’m already angry with Metro since Dec 12 (It was a bit rainy) and I had to drive to UW and pick up my stranded wife but when I got there, I ended up ‘ferrying’ 3 other women, all stranded due to three 133 bus no shows! Why can’t they put a VAN on the line on a rainy day let alone a snowy day? Their service is beyond hopeless and I expect no 133 bus if this weather prevails.
    Stay warm folks!

  • rykrite December 21, 2008 (4:38 pm)

Diane, where are you? I live near the West Seattle Nursery and I’m good on foot for up to a mile. I have a house full of food so I could put together a bag for you and deliver it…. rykri @ comcast . net if you want to contact me. My offer is sincere.

  • GenHillOne December 21, 2008 (4:38 pm)

As I mosey around on the backside of my house, there is so much snow now that I can’t see steps – or worse – some 2′ drops. No one will be back there but us, so I’m not too worried. I’ve been seeing people walking with ski poles though and I think I’ll be venturing out with a makeshift “walking stick” in this stuff. Not even so much for support, but to make sure I know where the curbs and things are! So many folks aren’t home, there’s no telling what what’s hiding under a drift.

  • AlkiRagdoll December 21, 2008 (4:43 pm)

ok, now I am getting angry. 22 snow trucks for this size city is irresponsible. Much less to send them to care for a football game………. ugghhhhhhhh Anyone here ever heard of Mayor Byrne of Chicago (she won election as mayor when the prior mayor didnt get the snow removed). Seems like West Seattle’s Mayor HalfDime should be held responsible. I have not been able to get my car our of the garage since last weekend (my street is barricaded) and while I have plowed by driveway, there is no hopes of getting up to Admiral Way. I took the bus yesterday, but they were late yesterday…. Mayor Half Dime should be impeached.

  • Dustin December 21, 2008 (4:45 pm)

Whoever said that this is perfect weather for baking was right on the money!
Looks like the cinnamon role recipe made a double batch, whatever will I do with the extras? Time to sit by the window, watch the snow fall, and eat some warm gooey goodness.

  • miws December 21, 2008 (4:48 pm)

Karlynn, I don’t know about Gatewood Hill right now, but California, in the block of Thriftway looks to be fairly easily drivable, have seen cars going both directions all day. Haven’t noticed a sanding truck for many hours (but could have easily missed it). I did see the guy in the Bobcat (WSB posted a pic of him yesterday) clearing Thriftway’s parking lot again with in the last hour or so.

  • Mags December 21, 2008 (4:50 pm)

i just heard on the tv that they are expecting 3-6 more inches…just kill me now. My emergency hotline at work hasn’t been updated, my nephews are supposed to be flying in from San Diego tomorrow (I doubt it now) and the roads are looking worse than ever.

Plus my daughter’s grinch of a boss has threatened her job if she doesn’t come in to work (25 miles one way and she is in her last month of pregnancy), even though she can work from home and isn’t even customer facing..what is wrong with people? (yeah, his wife is a stay at home mom and they live in Issaquah, nice)..
There is a special place in hell for people like that. I’m pretty easy going, but even today, I’m a little bit stressed.

  • rykrite December 21, 2008 (4:52 pm)

Some winters, 27 snow trucks in Seattle is 27 too many. When we put money toward snow plows, we have to take it away from other things. I am not sure what the right answer is, but I think it’s fair to say that most of the time, snow plows are not a major issue in Seattle.

    Walkin’ in a winter wonderland….

  • WSB December 21, 2008 (4:54 pm)

We had a pic of the snowplower today too. Re: driving – California is probably the best road on which to drive, but that may not be saying much. Ellen is a bit further down the hill – can you tell how things are from where you are, Ellen?

  • Aim December 21, 2008 (4:56 pm)

Diane: I’ve got some very hearty soup I made yesterday — TONS of leftovers. I am more than happy to share. Where are you located?

  • j. December 21, 2008 (4:58 pm)

Anyone know if there are cabs driving people home from airport? I have a friend coming in tonight at ten that needs a ride to Shoreline area from Seatac. She called me to ask the weather/cab situation. Thanks in advance!

  • WSB December 21, 2008 (5:03 pm)

Aim’s note reminds me of one thing – I apologize again that everything doesn’t work together seamlessly, but in the WSB Forums, we do have a private-message feature, since sign-in is required there. So if anyone needs to communicate but is not comfortable with sharing an e-mail address or phone number openly, you could use that feature. Or we would also be happy to relay as time allows, since we see the e-mail addresses of everyone who comments, and can forward a request or note:

  • Alice December 21, 2008 (5:03 pm)

I’m off to walk from the Junction to south Arbor Heights, so there won’t be any updates to the map for a couple hours – but it’s up to date as of comments around 4:55pm.

  • datamuse December 21, 2008 (5:05 pm)

My husband just informed me that a pickup truck got stuck trying to get over the hill at the end of our alley. The end of the alley is now blocked.
    .
I can’t get too upset, I guess, because the roads really are craptastic and every available parking space has already been taken (presumably by people who live down Kenyon east of 9th Ave SW), but now we can’t get out that end of the alley at all. Nice.

  • miws December 21, 2008 (5:05 pm)

To those upset about all the attention being paid to the roads and transit around the Seahawks Stadium, I feel your pain!

    .

Similarly, I’ve always hated the Mariner’s “Business Man’s Special” games, that unless they go into several extra innings, dump all the fans on the roads right in the middle of the afternoon rush!

    .

Hated ’em over 25 years ago, when I was a delivery driver, (driving a compact car, as opposed to a big delivery truck, fortunately) and they’d screw up all the traffic when we were trying to get the last of our pick-ups and deliveries done before quitting time. (My last year or so with that company, our reprographics shop was on 4th S just south of the Dome.)

    .

Hated ’em in subsquent years when I worked in parking garages in the Central Business District, and I’d be trying to get home via car (when I had one) or bus.

    .

Hated ’em when I had to catch the bus home from my next job at 35th & Fauntleroy, and would have to wait forever for anyone of 3 routes home to the Morgan Junction that, all pass next to or near Mariner’s Stadium. (Back then, I wished the city would make the Stadium lock the fans in until 6:00 pm or so, until traffic lightened up, and the possibility of a monorail was looking mighty fine too!).

    .

Hated ’em working in White Center and the busses would be running way late to get turned around at the end of their routes, to head back toward downtown. (Actually felt sorry for the bus driver’s more than myself, as they’d miss their break on the layover).

    .

    Mike

  • Cheeky December 21, 2008 (5:07 pm)

First: Thank you WSB! I’ve been all but living off of this page and all of the comments over the last week.

Second: Does anyone know of a relatively safe route to the VA Hospital? My roomie is supposed to be there tomorrow AM for a much needed operation and we’re trying to plan the best/safest way to get him there. We have possible access to a car, but it’s rwd and without chains. *Any* feedback would be very much appreciated!

  • lina December 21, 2008 (5:10 pm)

good question on taxis and the airport j… i am wondering the same thing as i am supposed to fly out to michigan (where it is even snowier!) from seatac middle of the night tomorrow and we usually take the 560 bus there from barton and 35th. from the metro website, it looks like the 560 is skipping west seattle completely in it’s route- is that correct? any other ideas short of paying for parking or having a friend drop us off? are there particular cab companies that any of you have used this week that feel reliable and safe in the snow?

  • Mary December 21, 2008 (5:14 pm)

Snow plow funding is one thing. But emergencies – even 100-year events — are necessary to plan for. Just because they don’t happen every year doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Just ask New Orleans.

How much money does the City of Seattle and its residents lose from employees not making it to work and customers not making it to stores to buy stuff, especially the week before Christmas in a recession?

Sheesh. Penny wise, pound foolish. And never mind public safety. Geez.

  • JenY December 21, 2008 (5:16 pm)

Just snowshoed up and down Lincoln Park–amazed I remember how, but I’ll be sore tomorrow. Trees are gorgeous and cathedral like; the snow is energetic and wet. Traffic coming up the hill from the ferry dock registered on the electronic speed sign at 14-18 mph. The road is covered in slush–thick, not icy (yet). It’s driveable, kind of the way a Power Bar is edible… why would you do it if you don’t have to?

My thoughts go out to those who need to get to work/shopping/pick up family tomorrow… let’s hope the weatherpeople are wrong (wouldn’t be the first time) and that the Great Thaw happens soon (but not with a speed that floods people’s basements). Stay warm!

  • ericak December 21, 2008 (5:16 pm)

lincolnparkwalker – what towncar/suv service did you book for the airport? I am looking for Tuesday options.

  • miws December 21, 2008 (5:20 pm)

Mags, re: your daughter’s grinch boss, and the special place in hell for him…..
    .

Yes! And not that toasty warm, fiery brimstone section. That dude needs to be in the area with the THICK ice, and having to continually walk on it with hard sole non tread shoes!

    .

I can somewhat sympathize with business owner’s/managers that need employees on site to keep things running, but, an employee’s safety should never be compromised, and the job should never be threatened in such a case.

    .

And, it’s utterly appalling, and unacceptible for him to expect her to show up, when there is the option for her to work from home. Especially when she’s “lugging around” ;) your Grandbaby!
    .

    Mike

  • Darren December 21, 2008 (5:32 pm)

I know…if they keep telling us to stay off the roads if you can and too take the bus….if one ever shows up how are we supposed to get to work ? It’s not worth walking a mile to a bus stop and waiting for 3 hrs for a bus. It’s not worth getting in the car to have someone who drives too fast or tailgates or crashes into you.

  • Megen December 21, 2008 (5:34 pm)

Mags- How unfortunate about your daughter’s boss!!!

I work at a Tully’s in Clyde Hill (off of 520!) and my boss is so chill about the whole thing. She says my safety comes first. I managed to make it in friday and saturday just fine and she was so happy about that. She told me for tomorrow to wait until 6:00 am to come in if I need to. :)

PS- Amantes pizza and pasta is still delivering! Just got our order in.

  • Cait December 21, 2008 (5:47 pm)

Mags – that has to be some kind of illegal, honestly. Her boss can’t be serious! I hope that she stays home – it’s just not worth the risk.

  • Veronica December 21, 2008 (5:49 pm)

So my boyfriend is just getting off duty at the fire station (he was born to drive in this stuff) and drives a 4×4…he is coming to rescue me so that we can go get some dinner since I havent been able to get out of my house for almost 2 days and I need to know what is open. We were thinking it would be nice to go to Alki in all this and I was wondering if we can post a thread on who is open based on the area. The editor said that they were going to post a “whose open” list a couple hours ago, but I havent been able to find it…any ideas? Can we get one going? I know its Sunday and most places would have closed early anyway, but I just thought I would check. I saw the short list saying La Rustica is open, but they are rather expensive…any other suggestions? Thanks!

  • Darren December 21, 2008 (5:53 pm)

Anyone know if Garlic Jim’s is delivering ?

  • Sue December 21, 2008 (5:57 pm)

I wish I had video of this: Car going eastbound on Dawson gets stuck sticking out into northbound lanes of Fauntleroy. 3 people come by and help him push the car into the center of Fauntleroy. I see him put his car into reverse, then fishtails into the northbound lanes of Fauntleroy (in reverse) and then proceeds to speed north on Fauntleroy, going in reverse the whole time. Truly priceless. Let’s hope he doesn’t kill someone on the way.

  • BatKeva December 21, 2008 (6:01 pm)

I big WOOOOOT to Amante for delivering dinner in the middle of this. The roomies and I are having Christmas a little early. Now here’s hoping we can all get our flights out on Tuesday. (WI and AZ!)

  • WSB December 21, 2008 (6:03 pm)

Veronica, if anyone has updated info on openings/closures we’ll add it to a new post we created a while back with fixed info-links and closure/openings …
    https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=12959
Otherwise most of everything that came in earlier today is outdated so we haven’t carried it over. We will be starting the evening post within the hour after a few more pix from the day.

  • datamuse December 21, 2008 (6:04 pm)

Has anyone been to/from the airport recently?
    .
A friend of a friend is stranded there and we’re wondering if there’s any way for her to get to us.

  • lenamegan December 21, 2008 (6:10 pm)

We just drove to Shoreline and back to pick up my son. Used 99 the whole way with chains. Just fine with the chains as long as we went slow. Some of the side streets were deep enough to get stuck on. I wouldn’t recommend it without chains or at least AWD.

  • Mags December 21, 2008 (6:15 pm)

Thanks for the kind words everyone. She’s very stressed, but I think she will stay home tomorrow. Not worth the risk, especially after looking at the mess out there. I have made it to work every day, but I think those of us who take the bus regularly are a litte more used to having to wait and deal with metro. My bus is usually late at night anyway and I have toasty clothes.

I think the most important thing for all of us to remember is to be safe and look out for our neighbors, especially if we have any elderly folks who can’t get out. My boss used to work at Harborview and she said that when the weather is bad like this, that’s when all of the old folks break something because for some reason, they are compelled to go out and get the mail..maybe asking if you can go and get their mail for them or if they need something at the store.

  • Preggo December 21, 2008 (6:22 pm)

Hey Sue, we must live close to each other, I saw the same fiasco out my window with that guy going in reverse!!
    It’s a moron-a-thon at times, out there….

  • Darren December 21, 2008 (6:23 pm)

Pizza Hut is delivering also !!!! Thank you Pizza Hut !!!

  • WSB December 21, 2008 (6:30 pm)

Darren, if you call Garlic Jim’s, let us know what you find out. I’m adding the mentioned delivering/open/etc. to that aforementioned links page at:
    https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=12959
I am loathe to make people go jumping between posts (and the comments threads will get too convoluted) so please keep mentioning any closure/opening discovery here and we will do the same in the narrative above. That other post is only meant to be an ADDITIONAL quick-reference point for anybody who saw/heard something and can’t remember where … TR

  • Darren December 21, 2008 (6:34 pm)

Garlic Jim’s isn’t delivering. But the Pizza Hut in White Center is delivering to some addresses.

  • Sue December 21, 2008 (6:42 pm)

I’d like to know why something isn’t being done on an emergency basis to get streets clean. Sure, the city can’t afford to have 100 plow on hand all the time, but these are extreme circumstances that require some extreme solutions. For instance, I remember once in NY we had a very extreme blizzard, and the city was asking anyone who was unemployed to come and get paid $10 an hour to shovel out crosswalks and storm drains. there are no private contractors anywhere who can help out?
    .
This is beyond ridiculous. And the forecasts don’t show any relief for the forseeable future. I think half the reason nothing has been done is that people keep thinking “it’ll clear up tomorrow” and they can just bury their heads until it’s over. Kinda like how we handle the viaduct replacement decisions too.
    .
I keep being told how “rare” all this weather is. This is the second time in 4 winters I’ve been here that I’ve stuck in my home for days due to weather – and weather that shouldn’t be making such an impact if the city was prepared to handle it. Maybe it was rare in the past, but perhaps it’s not so rare anymore.

  • BG December 21, 2008 (6:54 pm)

I haven’t seen a plow go by yet on Admiral towards the bridge

  • AlkiRagdoll December 21, 2008 (7:10 pm)

Part of the reason I am so angry, is Mayor HalfDime is supposed to be a national leader on climate change issues. Given that the experts say that wide weather swings (cold to hot/winds) will become more dramatic with increasing climate change… means that he and his administration should be factoring just these types of events into their planning. Plows/deicing/sand trucks dont have to be single duty vehicles, they can serve many needs (such as strapping the plow to the front of a truck). County Exec Sims’ name is all over a document issued earlier this year advocating that state and local government do such planning. Either they are not living their talk, doing lousy planning, or figuring that tghe cost to West Seattle outweights the risk. I dont like any of these. I think those of us who have not been able to work for a week, would gladly contribute $5 annually to purchase and maintain trucks. $5 is not much to me, but if everyone paid it… we would have a fleet of vehicles to address these emergencies.

  • stephen December 21, 2008 (7:13 pm)

3:41 PM UPDATE: Not sure whether technically that’s freezing rain or sleet falling right now, but it’s little tiny ice crystals.

Just FYI, freezing rain is when it falls as liquid and then freezes when it lands, and is what caused the thin coat of ice on everything early this morning (the picture of ice-covered branches at the top of the post is a good example). Sleet is the little tiny crystals here in the states. Other places sleet refers to mixed snow and rain.

I live on Fauntleroy where it parallels the WSB and have seen two snow plows over the past 2 hours. The bridge is still pretty snowy and people are still going way too fast for the conditions. Please slow down!

I don’t want a fleet of snowplows that will go mainly unused, but I would like to see an emergency plan that employs contract assistance, whether it’s people with shovels or trucks with detachable blades. Just something that can be onhand to help.

ericak–here is the car service i found http://www.seattle-limo.com/. some i called were totally booked for tomorrow others weren’t planning on picking up in west seattle at all on monday. this place is charging $95 while another one i called was $140. i suppose its “sky’s the limit” under circumstances like this! good luck.

ericak, you might want try shuttleexpress.com and reserve on-line. Their web page says they are booked thru Dec. 22 for rides to the airport, but anyone with a flight after that might want to give this a try. I’ve taken their shared vans many times in snowy/icy weather and their drivers don’t seem to have any problem picking me up or getting me there safely and on time.

WChood: that’s the funniest one I’ve read all day!

Cabin Fever is an understatement. I was just resorted to watching Real Housewives of Orange County! Good god, what is this (snow) coming to?

Thanks lincolnparkwalker and Alcina. Shuttle Express is only picking up from downtown hotels on Tuesday and Wednesday. Towncar service is closed. I will keep trying. If anyone is heading to the airport on Tuesday around Noon let me know (we have 2 passengers) . . .

Sorry, comment time is over.
