West Seattle snow: Sunday night (and overnight) updates

It’s time to kick off the evening coverage, with a special focus on what we learn about planning for tomorrow – it may be school break, but a lot of folks are going to have to try to get to work tomorrow, so we’ll do what we can to help, with the latest news — including info from YOU, in the comments or via e-mail (editor@westseattleblog.com) – if you’re away from a computer and have something to share, call us 24/7 at 206-293-6302. First update: Some have asked when Metro will put up its information for tomorrow here. Metro’s very helpful and proactive Linda Thielke e-mailed WSB to explain:

We don’t want to update the snow & ice page until about 4 am Monday, because we still have Sunday service out on the road. If we were to put Monday’s service info online tonight, it would really confuse people. Anyone planning to ride Metro on Monday morning should check the site and then check again just before they need to leave home, because road conditions are changing rapidly.

Our Monday live updates will start by 5 am, by the way, to help with the morning commute. But in the meantime, we’re here for many more hours. Also note our new post with quick info-links and also known closures/who’s-open (like who’s delivering pizza tonight); that’s not meant to REPLACE discussion here, but a place to record what comes up here for your quick reference.

7:24 PM UPDATE: Just in from Josh Sutton of the West Seattle Family YMCA (WSB sponsor):

MONDAY: West Seattle Y Facility open at normal time

Fauntleroy Y Facility open at normal time

YMCA Licensed Child Care
Programs at Cooper, Concord & Arbor Heights Elementary are closed.
School Age Kids from all licensed Y programs can go to WS Elementary (High Point), open at 9am.
Preschool Kids from all licensed Y programs can go to WS YMCA PSCC, open at 8:30am.

Check website at westseattleymca.org anytime for more updates.

King County has just posted a running list of its open/closed info – here it is; also adding to the aforementioned links page.

7:36 PM UPDATE: More on the power-outage warning we posted at the end of the afternoon coverage – Now WSDOT has noted via Twitter that there’s word of some outages in Kitsap. No Seattle outages noted yet, but again, have your flashlight/etc. ready. This time, it’s not wind, but heavy snow taking out branches/lines, etc.

From Ingrid: “Happy first night of Hanukkah to the West Seattle Jews!” Indeed.

8 PM UPDATE: From Big Red at 29th/Thistle, side by side comparisons of how much snow has fallen in the past several hours – 3:30 pm at left, 7:30 pm at right:

Thinking about escaping to California? L.A.’s expecting a storm too. Tame compared to ours.

8:25 PM UPDATE: E-mailed by Tish:

I just learned that my 11:40 a.m. flight out of Sea-Tac tomorrow was canceled. When I try to call Alaska Air to book a new reservation, I get nothing but a busy signal, so I’m guessing a lot of people are trying to rebook their flight right now. If anyone else in West Seattle is planning to fly out tomorrow, they should definitely check their flight status online before heading out.

Alaska’s website reiterates that all remaining flights for today out of Seattle AND Portland (which also is hit hard) are canceled. We have a Sea-Tac webcam in the right sidebar TFN, by the way.

9:05 PM UPDATE: Junior Member and your editor are just back from a half-hour research walk down the block. From the top of the Thistle/Northrop staircase, you can hear so many snowmobiles roaring down the hill somewhere (Brace Point? Barton?) that it sounds like a raceway. If you watch the snow under a streetlight, but not looking directly AT the streetlight, it sparkles as it falls. If you stomp on an obviously untouched snow pile – say, a parking strip – honestly, it seems to be nearly a foot deep. Same for the snow in the middle of undriven side streets – this is different from last week, and there’s still the “creme brulee” layer of ice a few inches down. Meantime, King County has issued its latest road alert. And Giannoni’s Pizzeria in Westwood Village says it’s had a huge weekend and just sent an advisory about its hours – Donna Burns from Giannoni’s e-mailed:

We would like to extend a huge thanks to our West Seattle Community and Giannoni’s
fans for making this weekend – which could have gone either way – our biggest weekend to date. People stayed around their neighborhood and patronized community businesses. We stayed open until 8 tonight and really felt appreciated!

We will be open Monday, Tuesday normal hours (11am – 9pm)
Wednesday until 6 (Following Target’s schedule)
Thursday closed
Friday and beyond, normal hours (11 – 10 F, 11:30 – 10 Sat, 11:30 – 9 Sun)

A shorter version of that will be on the open/closed/link list.

9:23 PM UPDATE: Newest “forecast discussion” posted by National Weather Service. Says another band of snow showers coming in around 11 pm. Another? This one hasn’t stopped yet!

9:40 PM UPDATE: Before the night’s out, we’ll be interspersing some nice pix not used earlier – this one from Meighen:

And from Shelley:

Good line from WSB sponsor Rhonda Porter (mortgageporter.com) via Twitter: “I feel like I’m stuck in a snow globe and I can’t get out!”

9:56 PM UPDATE: From Claire in Seaview: “We are on Juneau & 47th…power lines were snapping with blue electrical explosions. Just so you know (in case we lose power). Still have power now.” WSDOT just sent this ferry update via Twitter:

We could see reduced service on all ferry routes beginning this evening and Mon. Possible one boat service on all WSF ferry routes

Thanks to Mary for e-mailing that Superior Court is closed again tomorrow; that’s one of the closures listed on the King County list which is among the links on our open/closed/links page, which we will continue updating tonight and tomorrow (and as long as this all lasts).

10:26 PM: Remember the Robert Frost poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”? That title is evoked by this shot Dustin got, looking down Seola Beach Drive (map):

And miles to go before I sleep.

10:36 PM: Speaking of sleeping, Ryan has had ATVers interfering with his family’s sleep, and he’s pretty much had it – from his e-mail:

Enough with the ATVs!!! Idiots riding ATVs until 2am last night on residential streets around Charlestown and 44th. They’re at it again tonight. I’m all for people having some fun, but not when it wakes my 3 mo baby up every time they race by. Enough is enough. It’s illegal to ride them on the streets, period. It’s also against the noise ordinance to be making that much noise after 11pm. If you see/hear these idiots, call the cops.

We’ve heard police calls to that vicinity (the steep hill west of California) in recent nights but apparently the ATVers are undeterred. Now, to Delridge/Holden (map), where Patrick M took this photo looking west up the Holden hill:

11:14 PM UPDATE: TV, running through some previous snowtastrophes in Seattle, mentioned 14″ of snow in December 1990, 12″ in December 1996 (we remember that post-Christmas storm well), but nothing like the alltime record-setting month … more than 50 inches in January 1950. Here’s a HistoryLink.org article about it.

11:37 PM UPDATE:
Just checked the Sound Transit alerts page (which is linked to our links/open/closed post), and there’s this alert for tomorrow: “ST Express Route 560 will operate on Monday with no service to West Seattle.” Also, Peggy just forwarded a note that the University of Washington has “suspended operations” for Monday for Seattle, as well as Bothell and Tacoma. Apparently, this is EXTREMELY rare.

11:51 PM UPDATE: Some more pix … first, Charles Whelan sent this one with a warning “While walking around taking in the beautiful winter wonderland scenes, please watch out for precarious icicles! This one is in the parking lot of Westwood Court Apts on Trenton,” and he notes its mate apparently already fell. The daytime icicle photo that follows was sent to us earlier today, but we’re having trouble matching it with its photographer … we set it aside for future use.

And from Marybeth Coghill, beautiful shots from around West Seattle on this snowy night – these two, focusing on trees:

Marybeth’s full gallery on Flickr can be seen here.

12:37 AM UPDATE: Just in as a comment on an old crime post, from “A Westwood Neighbor”:

The chains were just stolen off our Camry parked at Kenyon & 34th… around 11 pm

12:56 AM UPDATE: So as not to end the night’s updates (barring breaking news) on a down note, here’s the latest cute kid picture – from Shelley:

I drove around tonight a bit, just got back from: South on Cali from Dakota to Morgan, Left, back south on Fauntleroy, down Avalon and around Alki, all the way up around the back of Admiral, then around some back streets off of California, etc.

Avalon and Admiral (west of California down the hill) was surprisingly good, Alki and anywhere one block off of California was surprisingly bad. California between Alaska and Morgan was also quite nasty considering how busy it was.

Had to wait a number of times for FWD cars (a Saab, couple Hondas) to try to cross over a street, or make a left turn where it was really slushy. I was in a Land Rover, and I never felt like there was anything I couldn’t drive through, but any FWD/RWD car trying to make it around side streets or across a deep patch of snow could very easily get stuck.

The worst parts were when a car tried to cross the middle of a street that had been plowed, or driven heavily on. If you are making a left turn across California, you need to make sure you are going fast enough to make it through the deeper snow, but slow enough to maintain control. Not an easy task.

And it’s *still* coming down out there.

  • Christy December 21, 2008 (7:31 pm)

I just wanted to take a second to thank all the hard-workin’ folks at the blog for their tireless efforts.

This is an invaluable community service!

  • Jim McCabe December 21, 2008 (7:35 pm)

We just got home after driving from Morgan Junction down to the Alaska Junction. Only one mile, but one of our tire chains came loose and I had to stop for 15 minutes to re-attach it in front of Cafe Verite.

I was amazed when a mother and four kids walked by and loudly said “look, another loser!” Not just the kids – the mom said it too. That’s some great parenting when you teach your kids to insult people in a moment of trouble.

Later, on the way back, around 7:20pm, we saw a snow plow clearing out the northbound lane of California. There is still a good 10 inches piled up in the turning lane, and the southbound lane still has 3 or 4 inches between the tire tracks, but at least the northbound lane looks good now.

  • rykrite December 21, 2008 (7:40 pm)

Still snowing…and snowing…and snowing! Our street – 45th – is icy, covered, and not somewhere I would want to drive.
    .
Earlier today we saw someone not make it up Erskine. I was glad to be on foot.

  • rykrite December 21, 2008 (7:44 pm)

Jim, what a story! I hope that mom is ashamed of herself…and I hope that the mom learns some manners, and that she doesn’t teach her children her own manners.

  • RobertSeattle December 21, 2008 (7:44 pm)

OK, I had enough – Uncle!

  • rbj December 21, 2008 (7:44 pm)

Linda Thielke said: “If we were to put Monday’s service info online tonight, it would really confuse people.”

So either they’re all idiots or they think we are.

No offense to Metro, as I really appreciate their situation, but having some idea what to expect would be really appreciated. No one is expecting the snow and ice to vanish overnight.

  • Caitlin December 21, 2008 (7:46 pm)

Do you guys think the worst of the storm is over? Or is there more bad stuff coming our way?

  • cathy December 21, 2008 (7:47 pm)

Winter Solstice today. So the days will start getting longer tomorrow. Things are looking up.

  • Megen December 21, 2008 (7:49 pm)

still have only seen one plow come by on 35th Ave Sw and Dawson heading northbound down the hill. I was just thinking today if 35th is cleared enough that I could get down the hill tomorrow for work I couldn’t even make it across the giant pile of snow the plows have created over the past couple days in the middle of the road. I understand the DOTs reasoning behind them plowing to the center of the roads, but it doesn’t make sense when you have this much snow coming down. People can dig out their cars when you plow to the side of the street and extra DOT crew members can dig out the drains. That what we do in Wisconsin. Sigh… I am rambling now because I have cabin fever.

  • rykrite December 21, 2008 (7:50 pm)

Caitlin, Cliff Mass’s blog is reporting all of this, and he’s been pretty spot-on. He says more precipitation to come…and King5 shows showers – snow, rain, ice- through every day of their five day forecast.

  • rbj December 21, 2008 (7:50 pm)

    Hey.

I work retail in West Seattle and I will say that I have heard a lot worse than “loser” from residents of this island.

  • Diane December 21, 2008 (7:51 pm)

cross posting here out of desperation; just posted this on the forum:
    ~
    Ride downtown Mon for work?
    ~
is there anyone with car able to navigate snow/ice going downtown Mon and Tues morning about 8am, that I could catch a ride?
    ~
after the metro nightmare Fri, where all 3 of my buses never came, waited 4 hrs in cold, was never able to get to work; I’m very frustrated and afraid of missing more work; looks like same weather/bus scenario tomorrow, I’m very concerned about being able to catch any bus downtown in the morning; or even knowing which stop to hike to with all the last minute reroutes with no warning and/or cancellations
    ~
I have a client picking me up downtown at 3rd and Pine, for work in Magnolia, but I still need to get downtown to meet them, around 8 – 8:30; anyone?
    ~
otherwise I will hike out at 7am, may be out at bus stop at Admiral and Olga (across from viewpoint) trying to hitchhike downtown again
    ~
I live at 37th and Hinds
    ~
    Thanks

Cliff Mass blog p.s. is one of the fixed links on the post I mentioned earlier – no need to move discussion there, just an FYI, just in case you have trouble finding it. We are watching it too and adding notable revelations to the ongoing coverage.

Just got back from snowshoeing around Gatewood Hill; saw a plow going south on 35th at the water towers. It was the first one I’ve actually seen in the last week.

And Jim- what a story! What’s sad is the mom is not only like that herself but is teaching 4 other humans to act that way too. I’m glad you got to and from your destination safely.

  • Kami December 21, 2008 (7:58 pm)

I need to get down to Tukwila area for work in the morning What does everyone suggest for commute tomorrow? Attempt to make it in or wait a few hours? I live on the border line of West Seattle/Burien.

  • d. December 21, 2008 (7:59 pm)

..pizza Hut isn’t delivering to the Junction… :( that was a mean tease…

  • Alice December 21, 2008 (7:59 pm)

I hope none of you are still driving, but if you are, the map is updated as of 7:50pm

    Alice’s Sunday Map

I safely walked from 42nd and Edmonds to 42nd and 104th, (5:05pm-6:20pm) and I wouldn’t recommend driving it. I caught a 54 for part of Fauntleroy – he was refusing to stop on uphill slopes. We were so thankful to him for existing, it didn’t matter!!

  • MissK December 21, 2008 (8:00 pm)

Can anyone tell me how Delridge looks? I am stuck in Ballard and HOPING with all hope I can drive home tomorrow.

I love snow but this is CRAZY!!!

  • Kami December 21, 2008 (8:03 pm)

    d-
I called Pizza hut earlier and they said 2 hours, so I opted for the fat free hot dogs I had left in the fridge. I feel your pain :(

  • alkigirl December 21, 2008 (8:07 pm)

WSB – you folks are a miracle! Thank you!

Looking at several stories and comments on the blog, it seems like some (or many!) of us are becoming very frustrated. There are concerns about getting to work, keeping jobs, and being safe. However, let’s keep our wonderful WS Community positive. By virtue of the fact that we can post on this blog means we have a roof over our heads and hopefully we are warm. There are thousands in this city who are not that fortunate. Be well, be safe!

  • rbj December 21, 2008 (8:07 pm)

This is like the stories I read in revelations. It’s like the apocalypse only it’s white instead of dark.

This is end times. You people just sit around and chit chat while the world is coming to an end. My God! Wake Up!

    Just kidding.

  • BG December 21, 2008 (8:12 pm)

it is still freaking snowing, and still no plows

  • rykrite December 21, 2008 (8:14 pm)

I suppose if the world was coming to an end then sitting around and chit chatting, my dog at my feet and my family snug and warm beside me, would be the way to go….
    .
But I’m sticking with the “It’s a winter wonderland” theory and that’s all I’m saying. :-)

  • WSB December 21, 2008 (8:16 pm)

Alkigirl – I have had that thought frequently. I don’t believe in jinxes (although I will knock wood after I type this) so I will go ahead and say it is really incredible that so far in this major event, no deaths have been reported. Even that crazy bus crash the other day – everybody was OK. Here’s hoping it stays this way. Everyone working hard to help each other, whether it’s loan-your-neighbor-a-shovel or share info here or so many other things, will really, really help – TR

  • Pablo December 21, 2008 (8:20 pm)

They’re running plows on Delridge but I wouldn’t want to make any guarantees about it’s drivability by tomorrow. It all depends on what comes down between now and then and where they stay focused. I feel for you, though. Our poor car is stranded up in Northgate right now but at least it’s safely parked and the nice people at QFC said we don’t have to worry about them towing it anytime soon. I’ve got my bus plans for work in the morning if we’re open and hopefully we’ll be able to bring the car home soon!

  • Karlynn December 21, 2008 (8:23 pm)

I’m trying to be a good citizen and wait until the roads are plowed/sanded/de iced, etc, to drive….but, with a small child at home and not a single major road in or out of my house plowed, I’m not sure what to do at the moment. Can’t very well make her walk the mile to the store and back in the snow, but can’t drive either! Ugh!

We’re running out of food now. Not pretty!! We’re gonna have to start digging into the nasty stuff in the back of the pantry and call it good if this doesn’t clear up soon.

I’m just amazed that I have not seen a plow or a sand truck in 2 days on the southern end of California. It’s a fairly major road……crazy!!! Makes it impossible to get out.

Just venting like everyone, it sounds…..but, I am happy that we’re warm with a roof over our heads….even if we don’t have any milk left. :-)

  • datamuse December 21, 2008 (8:24 pm)

Well, rbj, if we get three years of winter followed by a giant wolf swallowing the sun, then maybe you have a point! :)
    .
(What can I say, I’m a mythology buff.)

  • rbj December 21, 2008 (8:26 pm)

I am sitting here next to the warmth of an electric heater, a pack of cigarettes and a fifth of whiskey.

Every degree it drops is like another nail to our collective coffin.

  • WSB December 21, 2008 (8:27 pm)

Karlynn – There was a sand truck last night about 1 am. Repeatedly. I didn’t get out the door to take a picture in time. But we haven’t seen one since then.

  • rbj December 21, 2008 (8:28 pm)

Hey Datamuse, thanks for the link, that’s excellent.

  • Karlynn December 21, 2008 (8:30 pm)

Hmm…..Thanks for the info, that makes me feel a little bit better, WSB! :-) Come to think of it, I think I heard it beeping in my sleep…..too bad that the sand was buried under another 6 inches of snow by the time most people would have been able to benefit from it! But, anything is better than nothing!

  • Diane December 21, 2008 (8:31 pm)

both of my bus choices in Admiral, 55 and 56, just disappeared off mybus.org; so no buses running in Admiral?

21, 54 still going; jeez; it’s a long hike in the snow to catch those

  • ToddinWestwood December 21, 2008 (8:31 pm)

The six wheeled yellow road grater just plowed east on Roxbury.
It is bad out there now. The snow is so deep that your car will follow whatever tracks are in the snow and it is deep enough, at least in Arbor Heights that my SoobaRoo 4 wheel drive WITH CHAINS! was having trouble.
    I think I just heard the 4 horsemen approaching……

  • ToddinWestwood December 21, 2008 (8:33 pm)

…oh yeah, there is sections of Shorewood I drove thru that my car was scraping snow onthe undercarrige.

  • Babs December 21, 2008 (8:37 pm)

Yep that lady with the kids was not cool, maybe it was because she was alone walking with 4 kids in the snow and there you are in a Land Rover. Who knows? We all have stories. All of us. Tonight I’m warm, I have power, my pets are safe inside. I have food, I have a job. I’m so thankful. So far West Seattle and the Puget Sound is making it through this weather, this weather is a big deal and we are doing it. Not perfect but so far, and let’s cross our fingers there is no grief in the headlines soon… Thank you WS Blog for staying on top of this like you do when the weather temp tips the high 90’s….

  • BG December 21, 2008 (8:37 pm)

Can I catch a ride to work with one of the horsemen?

  • AlkiRagdoll December 21, 2008 (8:38 pm)

If I dont get out tomorrow 5am… CO tells me I wont make it for Christmas to see my ailing father. Black Current Martini’s (Sustaina-tini’s)at my house if I dont get out, and ya’ll are invited… my first Christmas without family…..

  • Curtis December 21, 2008 (8:42 pm)

Amtrak has also cancelled all thier Pacific NW routes…looks like more of us will be staying home this year.

  • Patrick December 21, 2008 (8:43 pm)

RBJ – Yea, I needed to get a couple fifths – ya know, just in case haha

I will be stuck at home tomorrow again….I hope I can use some sick time mixed with vacation time here….if it is essentially not working for a week.

BG – as for the 4 horsemen, You know they will be so crowded by the time they hit the Junction….*sigh*

  • CM December 21, 2008 (8:46 pm)

Those of you who didn’t have success with Pizza Hut tonight, I don’t know if they are still delivering but Amante delivered our delicious pizza in under 45 minutes at about 7:30, and with a smile. We definitely appreciate them being willing to be out there in this beautiful mess.

  • BG December 21, 2008 (8:46 pm)

Patrick, what will probably happen is that the 4 horsemen will cancel all trips into and out of Seattle because of the weather

  • Curtis December 21, 2008 (8:46 pm)

Sorry, my post looks so random…it was supposed to be an adjunct to the next posting.

  • Patrick December 21, 2008 (8:52 pm)

BG, they will operate at half capacity – so it will only be 2 horsemen, so not quite the apocalypse, more of a stern talking to

  • BG December 21, 2008 (8:54 pm)

    Patrick…LMAO

  • Brenda December 21, 2008 (8:55 pm)

I usually drive to my office in lower Queen Anne after dropping my kids off at school. We can not get our car out of the alley. I am going to catch the 54 and get off at 3rd & Pine and walk the 15 blocks to my office. I need to stop by Magic Mouse toy store in Pioneer Square on the way home to buy the kids remaining Santa presents. The 54 stops at 2nd & Columbia not to far from the store. Can any 54 riders give me some advice….was Friday a nightmare? We live on Fauntleroy and I have seen the 54 operating through this whole incredible storm week. Any advice would really be appreciated.

  • LInda December 21, 2008 (9:06 pm)

Had been seeing trucks plowing and sanding Fauntleroy Way around the Morgan junction earlier today but not for a while, figured they were all working on the roads around the stadium for the Seahawks Game.
Talked to my Mom, she live on 21st Avenue S.W., a designated secondary arterial, she has not had a single sanding truck or plow since this started last week. She can see Delridge around Orchard Street (Home Depot area), traffic is moving, slowly.
I Strongly suspect that Metro and the City of Seattle are completely overwhelmed and really just no longer know where they should be concentrating their efforts but are trying.
Just a reminder about Metro: they repeatedly state in weather conditions like this to wait at the top or bottom of hills, they will not attempt to stop on hills. The driver of the number 54 mentioned above was just following policy by not stopping, trying to keep everyone on board the bus safe by not getting stuck.

  • Alice December 21, 2008 (9:06 pm)

Added the Roxbury badness and the Delridge okay-ness to the map.

  • KSJ December 21, 2008 (9:08 pm)

And those two horsemen will be operating on their alternate snow routes.

  • aaron December 21, 2008 (9:10 pm)

just got back from alska juction the 55 shuttle in not running to night nice walk home took about a half hour

  • BG December 21, 2008 (9:12 pm)

and the alternate snow route won’t be posted

  • Patrick December 21, 2008 (9:13 pm)

man….cant even be scheduled by the 2 horsemen…even they can’t figure out how to operate in West Seattle.

my money is on being saved by Snake Pliskin….Escape from West Seattle…I bet if we put together $35 we could get this plan in action :)

  • J.See December 21, 2008 (9:13 pm)

I hope that the 4 am update doesn’t tell me that the 56 isn’t coming. I NEED to go to work, even if only for a few hours. I haven’t actually tried getting there since Thursday because of all the bad reports I’ve heard, and now I have a feeling it might be even harder tomorrow..but I am not sure I have a choice. Um, I’m sort of rambling about nothing, sorry. I’ve been cooped up for 4 days. I’m a little mad.

  • Brenda December 21, 2008 (9:15 pm)

Are all the 54 stops downtown level or do they not stop at some? If so, which ones?

  • p December 21, 2008 (9:16 pm)

has the staff at the blog slept in the last week?

  • Mags December 21, 2008 (9:17 pm)

The 54 didn’t stop at 2nd and Columbia when I took it home Thursday but it did on Friday. Thursday it went down Washington to 4th, then over to Spokane to First and then over the bridge. Friday night it went the normal way. I wouldn’t count on 2nd and Columbia if there is ice, however, probably no seats past Seneca if they aren’t coming very often. My husband works in Pioneer Square and he took a 15 back up 1st ave and got on the 54 at Virginia and actually got a seat. Who knows what unpublished route tomorrow will bring….

  • yumpears December 21, 2008 (9:17 pm)

Patrick @8:43 you are cracking me up!

  • BG December 21, 2008 (9:18 pm)

Escape from West Seattle…I can totally see it.

  • Patrick December 21, 2008 (9:21 pm)

yumpears – thank you _ i am trying to enjoy the best of the worst and put a smile on everyone’s face. well those who appreciate it anyways :)

BG – I only see it if we still use the really bad 80’s “CGI”

  • b'smomma December 21, 2008 (9:23 pm)

Just got a text from cousin in Detroit, MI….. it reads, “Dang girl you guys have more snow than us right now!….SERIOUSLY!” I Love the snow but this is definitly too much of a good thing! I’m ready to go back to work!!! OK, it’s oficial, I’m going CRAZY!!!!!!!

  • JenV December 21, 2008 (9:25 pm)

we were up at Shadowland for dinner, and there were some complete jackasses at the NW corner. first, they walk in the street, forcing you to slow down, then they throw snowballs at the car. then they try to goad you into getting out and fighting. I have never before wanted so badly to beat someone down. thank god most of the people they pulled this sh*t on had better sense than me and I was sitting in a warm bar.

  • Sarah December 21, 2008 (9:26 pm)

Anyone dealt with a flat roof leaking from snow weight?
My 64 yo mom has a tiny 1926 house near the Junction. No leakage in the past. Flat roof with central drain. Suddenly tonight is leaking in multiple places, dripping only, for now.
Attic crawl space mostly less than 18″ high, but I’m hiking over there & will go into attic and try to take a look. I’m a 45 yo with a bad hip, but I’m pretty handy.
Any thoughts appreciated. I don’t think we can get a roofer tonight.

  • BG December 21, 2008 (9:29 pm)

Patrick – You are now entering the Debarkation Area

  • Alice December 21, 2008 (9:30 pm)

Where can someone get a regular-size Nobel Fir for $10 tomorrow? McClendons? Holy Rosary? West Seattle Nursery?

  • Patrick December 21, 2008 (9:30 pm)

JenV – oh how i wouldve become more and more angered at that…..i cant say if cabin fever would have given me the will to confront them about being jackasses….but oh how i am getting closer to it. I have dirt bikers riding around here all the time who dont pay attention….so yea.

  • Brenda December 21, 2008 (9:31 pm)

    Mags,

    Thanks for the 54 info!

    Brenda

  • WSB December 21, 2008 (9:32 pm)

Alice, you might try WS Nursery, and use the $5 off coupon in the printout on our COUPONS tab (see page top) if you see something you like. My price check from early in tree season (see the Holidays page, link is near the top) didn’t show Noble fir at prices anywhere near that low, though.

  • Patrick December 21, 2008 (9:33 pm)

BG – Kurt Russell does not see his $35 dollars yet….Snake Pliskin is still “off the grid” after escaping L.A.

  • BG December 21, 2008 (9:35 pm)

Patrick, you might have survived cleveland, you might have escaped from new york, but this is West Seattle.

  • fiz December 21, 2008 (9:36 pm)

If you’re bored or cabin-carzy, try one or more of these:

    sort closets for clothes, coats, boots, blankets to donate when you can finally get out;

    bake something you’ve never tried before;

    check on elderly neighbors – make sure they have supplies, most of them won’t ask for help;

    write your family history to keep – or – burn;

    call a friend you’ve not talked with for a long time;

    sort the boxes of photos you’re going to get to someday;

    invite in a neighbor you haven’t met for coffee or a martini;

go online and donate to the charity you think will find the next cure for cancer, Lou Gehrig’s disease, MS or Alzheimer’s.

  • p December 21, 2008 (9:38 pm)

what about tony’s market? For the tree that is…
Hey, how’s this for service, my doctor just called because I have an 8:00 AM apointment tomorrow at the Poly Clinic and he just wanted to make sure I am ok! Of course we are rescheduling!

  • greenie December 21, 2008 (9:38 pm)

Not to make people jealous, but we have spent the past two nights at the Sheraton downtown, and I’m wondering if we should go back home to Gatewood tomorrow after reading your posts. The snow falling in Downtown has been beautiful and this has been a great relief from the cabin fever that was starting to set in. It has cost a fortune, but for the sake of our sanity – well worth it.

  • BG December 21, 2008 (9:41 pm)

p, that is great, the last big storm we had I had an appointment at Swedish, I tried calling them but the phone kept going to voicemail, so I walked there from Admiral and they were indeed open, but my doctor wasn’t there so they wanted to reschedule. I asked why no one was answering the phone she said they were to busy so they left it on “night”, when I asked why they didn’t call to cancel she said she figured people would call in. Um….

  • Patrick December 21, 2008 (9:41 pm)

BG, well played, well played….now I think I have to watch both movies tonight….after Casino Royale.

  • BG December 21, 2008 (9:42 pm)

Patrick you were a worthy opponent, enjoy :)

  • p December 21, 2008 (9:44 pm)

BG that is one for the genius file, “um, yes I called in but you have it on night….” nice…

  • Patrick December 21, 2008 (9:45 pm)

BG – I am currently watching Casino Royale (with the rifftrax commentary – aka Mystery Science Theater 3000) on my computer. so don’t you fret, i am still here :)

  • LeroniusMonkFish December 21, 2008 (9:45 pm)

Whoever it is that’s still “dreaming of a white Christmas” WAKE UP!!!! We get it already!!!

  • BG December 21, 2008 (9:45 pm)

p, yeah, that is just one of the reasons I changed doctor’s offices.

  • BG December 21, 2008 (9:48 pm)

Patrick, I must say ciao, have a great night and enjoy the movies…gotta love MST3000

  • PP December 21, 2008 (9:49 pm)

I think once the snow is melted, all of us who were kept sane by the WSB should get together and get the WSB crew very drunk or very hugged!! Anyone game?

  • CMP December 21, 2008 (9:50 pm)

I rode the 54 downtown and back today. The driver would only stop at flat areas, no hills. We made very limited stops, but no one was requesting. Also, we went down 1st ave instead of 99, then he looped around to 3rd and Pike to return back to WS instead of continuing on as the #5. I was impressed the bus made it up the WSB seemingly fine so I guess it gives me hope that I can get to Sodo tomorrow morning in my car, but since it’s still snowing, I won’t be hopeful.

  • Johnston December 21, 2008 (9:51 pm)

Since greenie was really gloating, I’ll admit…I’m taking tomorrow off…just too uncertain and I have the time off available. Work’s dead this week anyway. Beating cabin fever by bonding with my sweet new kitty, Bella Luna! We met at Kitty Harbor (thanks for the tip about them WSB) a month ago today!

  • Ali December 21, 2008 (9:52 pm)

    Thanks for the suggestions fiz!

  • p December 21, 2008 (9:53 pm)

PP I am GAME! we can even do it at my shop if you like.. or get one of our lively extablishments to host it for us. I say January when things are a bit more calm. And Alice HAS to be there so we can thank her for her amazing maps.

  • fiz December 21, 2008 (9:53 pm)

You’re welcome. Ali. Do unto others….

  • Johnston December 21, 2008 (9:55 pm)

    PP…I’m in too!

  • Mollsworth December 21, 2008 (9:57 pm)

    PP, cheers to that!!
I’m a newcomer here, are there any kind of monthly WSB get-togethers or anything? Would love to have some kind of place to foster this same community spirit in real life.
Have loved West Seattle since we moved in April. Discovering the WSB and everyone one here since the storm has just fostered those warm feelings!

  • Brynn's mama December 21, 2008 (9:58 pm)

Greenie – And we thought last weekend was a great one for a staycation! Lucky you! Have fun and keep warm. The pool is nice and the view even nicer….

  • p December 21, 2008 (9:58 pm)

Mollsworth, what a great idea! WSB, what do you think about a monthly social? Maybe getting a different place each month to host it….

  • greenie December 21, 2008 (10:02 pm)

Hi Brynn’s mama – my other handle is Sofia’s mama. The pool wasn’t too cold actually. We extended our staycation from one to two nights. How are things on Belvedere?

  • Alice December 21, 2008 (10:04 pm)

p, Awwww shucks … thanks! :) Maybe I’ll bring a laptop and teach you all to do it for yourself!

  • greenie December 21, 2008 (10:05 pm)

Brynn’s mama – you drive a CRV, how do you think our CRV will do going up 35th ave tomorrow? I’m a little nervous given the precious cargo….

  • JH December 21, 2008 (10:05 pm)

If Patrick and BG are hosting a party, I’m sooo there!

  • p December 21, 2008 (10:05 pm)

Alice, I am NOT that savy! Its a great day when I can find the on button…. really, I mean that too.

  • p December 21, 2008 (10:07 pm)

greenie, I have done 35th ave sw 3 times today in my 2000 protege with no issue.

  • Mollsworth December 21, 2008 (10:08 pm)

Oh, one other thing i was wondering (and apologies if this is the wrong place for this, I realize there are other forums), is there a place where members introduce themselves? I would love to have a sense of who is behind all of the screennames and who is in my neck o’ the woods.
I knew the moment I saw mention of baked goods, bacon and other deliciousness, that this was the place for me! ;)

  • greenie December 21, 2008 (10:08 pm)

thanks p, I’ll check again tomorrow before we head out.

  • PP December 21, 2008 (10:10 pm)

It’s official – WSB party in January!! Details to be determined.

Email me at seattleamiga@yahoo.com if you would like to be on “committee”!!

  • WSB December 21, 2008 (10:12 pm)

Re: social events – the WSB Forum members have a lot of that going on — they were going to have a holiday party this past Sunday, in fact, but weather unfortunately intervened. They’ve had bowling events, weekly knitting gatherings, there’s a book club … earlier in the year, they organized fundraisers for various causes, including most notably the Morgan Junction locksmith who was between insurers when an arsonist (still un-caught) torched his shop (he’s since reopened). Check out some of the threads in the forum when things calm down.

  • Patrick December 21, 2008 (10:17 pm)

well Im there for sure (assuming I can catch a ride with one of the horseman by that time).

  • Patrick the Z December 21, 2008 (10:27 pm)

since there is another Patrick I have changed to Patrick the Z now (and am now on the forums). I am still intent on watching Escape from New York in honor of being trapped tonight.

hope everyone is having a safe relaxing cabin fevered night at home tonight.

  • p December 21, 2008 (10:29 pm)

pp sent you an email! I think we should all wear name tags with both our real name and our screen name!

  • datamuse December 21, 2008 (10:31 pm)

Wow…I was already planning on taking tomorrow off and I just learned that the university I work for will be closed due to the weather. Not too surprising since finals are over!
    .
I cleared off my car on, gosh, Thursday I think? It’s taken on nine inches of snow since then.

  • Karlynn December 21, 2008 (10:34 pm)

Anyone out there have any idea what bus goes south on 35th Ave. SW to Westwood??

    Thanks WSBloggers!

  • Karlynn December 21, 2008 (10:35 pm)

BTW, I tried to figure it out on the Metro site, but between the snow changes and such, it was just too convoluted…..I figured someone who knows the system might have a better answer…..

    Thanks!

  • JH December 21, 2008 (10:36 pm)

So…Patrick the Z is the funny guy? Don’t confuse me. Cabin fever has made my brain fuzzy.

  • PDieter December 21, 2008 (10:36 pm)

    SARA

clear the snow on the roof around areas that butt up to a wall or a change from horizontal to vertical. (areas where there is flashing that may be below snow level). Often a roof leak will not be right where the water is coming through the interior ceiling. Also make sure the area around the drain is cleared of snow as there is flashing there too and you don’t want the water backed up behind ice around the drain.

email me if you want to go over more details

  • KevinE December 21, 2008 (10:37 pm)

Karlynn–the 21 runs up and down 35th to Westwood…. according to the metro it’s running as far south as Roxbury.

  • p December 21, 2008 (10:38 pm)

    karlynn
the 21 goes up and down 35th ave sw. It heads to downtown at alaska, so if you are north of alaska I can’t help you.

  • Morganlf December 21, 2008 (10:39 pm)

Moll: My husband and I just moved here in April as well. :-) The snow has really thrown me (a previous desert dweller) for a complete loop.

  • que December 21, 2008 (10:40 pm)

Ugh… I just read on Cliff Mass’s page that there is more snow to be expected on Wednesday.
Four snow events in 10 days is plenty for this girl… I am going to get myself a wintery adult beverage…

  • Karlynn December 21, 2008 (10:41 pm)

Thanks, KevinE and p! I will definitely be catching that to QFC tomorrow instead of trying to get up and down the Thistle hill!! I’ve watched many, many cars go up and down, but don’t know that I’m crazy enough to try it in a 2wd car!!

  • Elikapeka December 21, 2008 (10:45 pm)

Well, this was a first – hubby decided he should move the car from the street in front of our house to the driveway in back to avoid any out of control drivers, ATV-ers, or snowmobilers. We have an AWD SUV that’s driven to Colorado and back in winter weather and never misses a beat, and we’ve had no problems driving in this until now – he pulled into the driveway, put it in park, set the hand brake, and when he opened the door, started to slide back down the driveway – it’s not that steep! But it was that icy! So it was back around the corner (had a hard time getting up the incline for the first time ever) and back to the level street in front. We’re in Sunrise Heights. Yikes…..

  • p December 21, 2008 (10:45 pm)

karlynn post in the morning when you want to go and if I am out and about I will gladly take you at least 1 way. I have 2 conference calls in the morning, but will have to venture up 35th at least 2-3 times tomorrow.

  • Patrick the Z December 21, 2008 (10:53 pm)

JH – yes lol. and my brain is fuzzy too

  • d. December 21, 2008 (10:54 pm)

…I caught the 54 on Friday and it was pretty rough…grabbed it at the 4800 block of California and we made the Junction stop but drove by the rest…stood the whole way…wall to wall people and people even standing in the door wells…best of luck I’m staying home again tomorrow…

  • A December 21, 2008 (10:55 pm)

If my garbage wasn’t picked up last Monday then they surely aren’t coming tomorrow, right?? It’s much worse! But should we drag our cans out back anyway – just in case?

  • rbj December 21, 2008 (10:57 pm)

Why is everyone bummed out they have to be at home? I go to work and 8 hours a day there I am bummed out that I am not at home.

This is ridiculous. Did someone actually posted that they got a room at the Sheraton downtown so they wouldn’t get cabin fever?

    Silly.

  • d. December 21, 2008 (10:58 pm)

I had to go for some soup Kami…your hot dogs sound better…but pizza sure would have been nice…

  • fiz December 21, 2008 (11:00 pm)

Filled our bird feeder repeatedly and the damn starlings moved in, chased off the finches, sparrows and other little guys and emptied it while we helplessly watched. They even stole from the junkoes on the ground. We’ve tried standing guard but it’s hopeless.

  • Naomi December 21, 2008 (11:05 pm)

My company says they won’t close the office so long as Metro is running. I’m curious if anyone knows if Metro has EVER officially shut down competely.

Just stressed like everyone else about waiting for hours for a bus downtown on Friday).

  • p December 21, 2008 (11:06 pm)

KING 5 says 9.5″ of snow for seattle….

  • WSB December 21, 2008 (11:13 pm)

SPU has not made an official announcement but as we reported earlier, they don’t believe they’ll be picking up tomorrow, so for those of us with Monday pickups, that’s two missed Mondays.

  • T December 21, 2008 (11:15 pm)

Nicest week I have ever spent here. How cool is it to be a W Seattle resident now, everyone is rallying around the ‘hood! Beveridge Place is rocking. Snow/road issues are minor compared to what we get to enjoy. I was in Antarctica 10 days ago, temps to -45 f and lower, up to 60 mph winds. This is a vacation. Get out and enjoy it while you can!

  • ANW December 21, 2008 (11:18 pm)

How are you folks doing in the Arroyos? I can’t imagine you’d be able to come up the hill. Anything we can do for anyone down there? I’d be able to bring down a few groceries on foot.

  • AD December 21, 2008 (11:32 pm)

Fiz – Tonight a neighbor had me over for dinner and I just baked something (and I never bake) and I’m still going crazy. Sigh.

  • ellenater December 21, 2008 (11:40 pm)

I’ll post this tomorrow but if there are parents around Gatewood and you want to have play dates, post here, or PM me. Or if you need help with anything, again, post or PM. We are on Ida and were able to get out today. We plan to go out tomorrow. Our nine year old would love some playmates!

Also, I also feel very lucky. I can’t say this enough: I have heat and electricity. And going outside has some really nice bonuses. I think it’d be fun to go caroling in the snow!

  • sw December 21, 2008 (11:49 pm)

The ATV possie -now about six just cruised down 63rd at mock speed.

  • d. December 21, 2008 (11:51 pm)

    …been watching a lot of TV episodes that I missed on hulu.com …great site if you’re bored…

  • def December 21, 2008 (11:54 pm)

I probably shouldn’t post this, but I’ve had a couple glasses of Bourbon so what the hey…

rbj wrote: Why is everyone bummed out they have to be at home? I go to work and 8 hours a day there I am bummed out that I am not at home.

There are many people who have jobs where they don’t get any paid time off. So for them, a day at home (whether because of illness or weather) means a day they don’t get paid.

Also, they’re often the most dependent on mass transit — either they don’t own a car, or their car is not dependable enough to use in weather like this, or they simply can’t afford to pay for parking. So when Metro decides to cancel or re-route buses, it’s a big impact to them.

One or two days of unpaid leave due to snow might be OK. When it stretches to a week or more, it can turn into a real hardship. (How would you fare if you only got three weeks of pay for the four weeks of December? Could you still afford to buy Xmas presents?)

Personally, I’d like to see Nickels and Sims be required to take Metro to work once a week — including during winter storms. Maybe after they stand in the snow waiting for hours for a bus that has been re-routed they’d have a better feel for what the “average Joe” has to deal with. (And in good weather, they could use their transit time as an impromptu “town meeting” to hear about other issues from concerned citizens.)

  • LM December 21, 2008 (11:58 pm)

Hey T. My brother’s been going to Antarctica for more than twenty years; the weather you described is summer down there! Bill will be visiting me in W. Seattle in about a week. I’m curious to know what you were up to down there.

  • ellenater December 22, 2008 (12:09 am)

    I agree, def.

I’m surprised there aren’t any carpools being set up! I’ve heard of a lot of people just picking people up but no organized thing.

    Parking is insanely expensive, too!

  • sw December 22, 2008 (12:22 am)

Can’t sleep, love the snow. Reminds me of when I was a kid listening to the RADIO waiting for “district 303 is closed” …now I just wait until the guilt gets to me enough that I try to get to work, hate that!

  • mellaw6565 December 22, 2008 (12:27 am)

Wow – in the last 15 minutes or so I can actually see the lights of Vashon Island from Fauntleroy Hills. Does this mean it’s finally clearing up some? One can only hope!

Insomniacs, welcome .. this thread will stay open through the night … we’re going to start a new one at 5 am for live coverage of commute info etc. Everybody also remember the list with links/open/close … have added a few updates just in the past hour, like the libraries for tomorrow. I may re-timestamp that list in the morning so it doesn’t fall too far down the page but the URL will stay the same.

Def – my partner’s small company pays their employees 1/2 day’s pay if the office is closed by management; otherwise if an employee calls in when the office is open it’s a vacation/sick leave deduction.

Fortunately for her, she’s management and refuses to risk people’s lives, so they’ve closed the office officially Thurs., Fri. and tomorrow so their workers can receive some pay. Most of them live in outlying areas like Issaquah, Maple Valley, etc……

saw your link to the california storm. so bummed to be missing this one is west seattle. palm springs had a couple inches of rain last week and tons of snow on the mountains, but nothing like this! how i wish i was sledding down my old hill on 46th!!!

Sorry, comment time is over.
