WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Mailbox break-in

Sent this morning by Karen:

Sorry and angry to report I discovered this morning my mailbox on the east side of 35th SW just south of the 7-Eleven was broken into and severely damaged. Hoping no valuable mail was stolen. Mail recipients, beware!

Not to say that any of these would have helped in this case, but the >U.S. Postal Inspection Service does have advice for customers.

Sorry this happened. Everyone should sign up for USPS Informed Delivery. USPS sends images of mail and notifications of packages that are coming soon. https://www.usps.com/manage/informed-delivery.htm

There have been several break-ins both north and south of Roxbury in the White Center area in the past month.  Assume thieves are looking for envelopes with Christmas money.

This happened to my apartment building on Genesee St two days ago. It happened early in the morning. Someone managed to get into the building, and broke open all the mailboxes and stole all the packages. Must have taken them forever to accomplish that. I believe our property manager filed a police report, but regardless, it’s clear this is very common this year. Best to really keep an eye on when your mail and packages are getting delivered this season.

Can’t emphasize enough what first person said-sign up for USPS INFORMED DELIVERY. It won’t prevent a break in -but  you will be able to see what was supposed to be delivered -letters, bills, cards, packages etc.

Once upon a time, people feared messing with the Post Office as stealing mail got you locked up for a long time. The Post Office no longer seems to even bother and just dumps things on the local PD.

Sorry, comment time is over.
