REMINDER: Lights will be on at four local fields tonight and tomorrow

Before we get to the rest of what’s happening today/tonight, a reminder that Seattle Parks plans to keep lights on at some local fields in hopes of deterring fireworks use. And at the synthetic-turf sites, the lights will stay on four hours later than last year. The lights will be turned on at these fields at 9 pm tonight and tomorrow:

Lights at the following synthetic fields will be turned off at 11 p.m. on July 3 and 3 a.m. on July 5 :

Delridge Playfield, 4458 Delridge Way SW
Hiawatha Playfield, 2700 California Ave. SW
Walt Hundley Playfield, 6920 34th Avenue SW

Lights will be turned off at the following grass fields at 11 p.m. on July 3rd and July 4th:

West Seattle Stadium, 4432 35th Ave. SW

In addition to turning on the lights, Parks says the fields will be “monitored” 9 pm-2 am.

WSB do you know if the fireworks show last year, operating out of a truck in the WSHS parking lot, was a permitted/sanctioned event? it seemed too close to surrounding structures and rained sparks on the area. Just wondering if it should be reported this time

The only permitted Fourth of July fireworks show in the city that I know of is the one at Lake Union.

Any precautions or coverage at Bar S field?

Are all of these on/off/am/pm notations correct here or am I missing something? Seems backwards.

Thanks. Everything is correct except for one typo – the lights go ON at 9 pm, says Parks, not 9 am – fixed that.

So the lights are being turned OFF during peak fireworks time at those locations? That’s what is befuddling me. I thought the lights were supposed to be a deterrent.

I guess it’s kids who go to the parks and lots because it seems at least in my neighborhood all the adults just set them off in the backyard over their neighbors’ roofs.

Bars close at 2.  Fireworks really get going around 2:30 so turning the lights off at 2 is a nice accommodation to the people most likely to be setting off major explosives.

Why not just make a direct statement?  Something like:  let’s keep the lights on all night

Jack block park has modified its hours in the past.  Anyone know if it is closing early this year?

I’m really surprised that Madison playfield field lights aren’t on the list. https://parkways.seattle.gov/2024/07/02/lights-to-be-turned-on-at-athletic-fields-july-3-and-july-4-2/

SPS facilities are managed by the district (Nino Cantu SW Athletic Complex too), which didn’t announce its plans, if it has any.
