PRIDE: West Seattle Junction displaying rainbow flags today

The West Seattle Junction’s annual Pride Month display of rainbow flags is happening today. The West Seattle Junction Association told us they chose the date because of the celebration that VAIN is leading during tonight’s Art Walk – meet up at the shop (4513 California SW) 6-6:30 pm, then head south to California/Alaska for celebratory dancing.

The Junction’s first rainbow-flag display was in 2019, after an “adopt-a-flag” fundraiser.

I wondered this too. WSB, have the other years been only one day and do we know why they are displayed in such a transient way? Thanks!

Yes, it’s been one day since 2022, after a couple years with two days (as noted in the story above, 2019 was the first year ever, and the flags were bought with an “adopt-a-flag” fundraising campaign, which had also been done in the past for the Stars and Stripes that are put up on key national holidays). On those two-day years, they went up in the morning each day and came down in the late afternoon – vandalism/theft concerns. The one day switch was cited as response to the challenge of getting enough volunteers. Today they actually were up for longer during the one day – I noticed them still up during the Walk-All-Ways festivities 6:30-7.

Are we going to get an updated one with trans and BIPOC colors? Also, it should be more than one day!
