UPDATE: Crash at Admiral and Olga

11:47 PM: Police are blocking Admiral at Olga because of what’s described as a one-car crash on the embankment. No visual, and no mention of serious injuries, but they’re trying to head off the eastbound/southbound traffic before the crash scene.

12:44 AM: One lane still closed on eastbound/southbound Admiral.

12:49 AM … and now Admiral’s fully open again.

How many accidents at this intersection before changes are made?!

Bring it up with the Admiral Neighborhood Association and work with them to work with SDOT! Their next general meeting is 11/12.

Why do changes need to be made every time there’s an accident around here? How about the driver makes some changes?

      • YT November 3, 2024 (8:27 am)

Neighbor and Alki Resident, both can be right in this case. Drivers absolutely need to slow down and start following traffic laws. Unfortunately, without a huge culture change, the vast majority of drivers aren’t going to do that. I don’t actually know how many crashes occur at this intersection, but I do know drivers crash their cars very frequently on Admiral. If it’s a consistent issue, then changes to the built environment should be made to decrease the dangers, even if those dangers are caused by drivers breaking the law.

Neighbor. Can you give us the list of accidents at this intersection?

      • Derek November 2, 2024 (10:40 am)

I don’t have the full list but there’s tons and many aren’t reported as people pull over and handle insurance the next block up. We need a full stop light with a fixed cycle

Can you please change your handle for the other Derek’s. Been wanting to ask this for too long now

I use that intersection going from 36th onto Admiral and Admiral onto 36th daily and have had no issues as I use caution and don’t try to beat oncoming vehicles…

You mean like having enough police to do traffic enforcement?  That’s not happening anytime soon.

    • Bad road! November 2, 2024 (10:43 am)

Ah yes it is completely the fault of the road. Bad road! Timeout for you! 🤡 🤣 how about advocate for harsh punishment for drivers who drive recklessly. Stop calling it an accident first of all if it is avoidable by being attentive. Which I don’t know you should automatically be when getting into a machine that can cause fatalities. I guess you can keep coddling drivers that the roads are bad and out to get them if you want though.

It is speed not road conditions.

The thing to do is make reports to Find It Fix It and to the non-emergency number at SPD. The more data they have, the more chance there is for a change, if necessary. This goes for just about any road, encampment, litter, policing issue that you see.

Between Olga and the Admiral Bridge, the neighbors have tracked approx 16 accidents of varying types in the past 3.5 years.  We have been lobbying SDOT and the Council for a range of traffic calming solutions in this area. Cars have taken out hedges, fences, trees, traffic signs, planter boxes, driven into front yards, etc, etc.  SDOT study a few years ago showed that 70% of cars coming up the hill exceed the speed limit – with a number of cars going 70+ each day.  It’s a definite problem.  And one the city seems reluctant to address sadly.

  • Fifi November 2, 2024 (1:57 pm)

@Tammy B Have the neighbors done a speed audit of that section recently?  You can work with SDOT to borrow a speed gun and capture data with the equipment to verify existing data and get a new look at what’s happening right now. It might be a good way to add to the pool of information and another way to pitch the city on change to that area. Road diets, channeling, and other means really can help. Your characterization of “reluctance” is something we’ve run into in our neighborhood on Genesee Hill along SW Genesee St. I think it takes a lot of persistence to make that change.

@Fifi – we have not done pur own speed survey – but have relied on and referenced the SDOT survey.  Interesting idea though.  We are expecting an uodate from. SdOT and Saka’s office this month on our moat recent correspondence.  They indicated they needed time to review our info and come back, citing staff shortages as creating delays. Saka’s office has engages with us which feels like a step in the right direction BUT it is definitely an uphill slog. Fingers crossed.

Sorry, comment time is over.
