It was super close to shore!! Isn’t that shoreline pretty shallow for a big whale like that? An amazing sight to see and such a beautiful photo, Kersti.
Gray whales are often seen close to shore because they feed by filtering invertebrates from the sediment. They roll on their side to scoop it up, which is why we kept seeing on of its fins as it fed! Amazing looks at this behavior today :)
Amazing. We live in the 5400 block of Beach Drive. The Whale was very close to shore. I would guess the water depth was about 20 Feet. It was roughly in the same place for about 10 minutes. Going down then coming up and spouting them going back down,
Currently SB, mouth of Duwamish – west waterway just east of channel markers. Hopefully turns around.Have filed multiple WRAS reports 630
Kersti, I have heard from folks that there is a group text for whale sightings in west seattle. Not sure how to join that but would love to! We are always “just missing” sightings!! Just ran down to Elliott bay…no luck:( my number is 410.299.2398 if you can send me info.
Add me to the list of folks who spent over 90 minutes in their car driving all over Harbor Ave, Alki, Jack Block, and the incredibly unfun to access T81 (at least like today when you get blocked by a train at a standstill). I kept refreshing hoping for new intel!!
Will do. In case you miss this I’ll text you:

We are approaching 5000 members! ❤️🍟🍩
What a wonderful experience! Thank you to Kersti and Brittany and others who offer this free whale sighting notification service — at their own time and expense. They simply long to share their love of nature with others (and – I am guessing here- perhaps they hope that this love will translate to conservation of our beautiful natural habitat?). This was my first sighting of a gray whale, and I will always be grateful to these two wonderful humans for this! THANK YOU
I was down there too. Not the best photo, but it was very cool to see!
Sorry, comment time is over.
