UPDATE: Brown water in Upper Fauntleroy; hydrant testing continues

9:53 AM: This time it’s happening here in Upper Fauntleroy, about a mile south of the Gatewood report from Saturday; since early this morning, the water has looked like iced tea. Nothing on the Seattle Public Utilities map. We just got through to SPU’s hotline – 206-386-1800 – and they blame early-morning hydrant testing.

11:26 AM: To be specific, SPU said the hydrant testing was at a “record” pace, and apparently they weren’t exaggerating: We passed firefighters opening two hydrants in Morgan Junction and en route to a third.

Any update on when water should clear up?

It varies depending on how much “sediment” (aka rust) was stirred up. Ours is better now but whatever hydrant was tested nearby was tested VERY early – people nearer the ones we saw in the California/Fauntleroy biz hub around 11 am might have a while to go.

Did I miss a notice for the flushing? I don’t recall it taking this long to settle before.

I’m in the 6900 block of California – about two blocks south of the picture above – and my water is brown now. My neighbor in the condo next to me texted this morning to see if my water was cloudy like hers and it was not, but it’s about 90 minutes later and now it’s much worse than cloudy – the toilet water looks like somebody forgot to flush.

~7000 block California.Cloudy/yellowish water started last night, cleared up in our house after some showers, but has returned. Looks worse than before. No word on how long this generally takes to settle?

I don’t have exact timestamps but the brown water situation was pretty consistent this weekend. Saturday it was mostly the afternoon. Yesterday, it was off and on throughout the day. We’re in Gatewood by the elementary school.

It can be a bit confusing Anu, because if you use hot water during the brown water event, the water in your hot water heater’s tank get replaced with brown water.
It stays in your hot water tank until used, which can be a day or more later.
I filled a bath before realizing yesterday and today have clear cold water but still brown hot water (from the storage tank).

Sorry, comment time is over.
