Stadium site in lead for peninsula’s next off-leash area, Seattle Parks exec says

(2023 Seattle Parks image of stadium study area for off-leash area)

We’re at the Fauntleroy Community Association‘s monthly meeting, where discussion has just concluded with Seattle Parks director of planning and development Andy Sheffer. The discussion was mostly about the Lincoln Park pickleball-court project – full story on that later – but before he left, Sheffer provided a short update on another issue involving the park – whether West Seattle’s next off-leash area will be at Lincoln Park or just south of West Seattle Stadium. Sheffer said he thinks the final choice is going to be the West Seattle Stadium site, which most recently looked less likely because of a city need for a place to charge some of the electric vehicles in the city fleet. Sheffer told the FCA he believes the site can handle a dog park and fleet charging, and that the plan will be presented to the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners on February 8.

This is excellent news! A much better place for the dog park, walking distance for so many.

Great location! We desperately need a West Seattle dog park.

@sara We have one at Westcrest. But we need another for sure!

I always thought that land was part of the golf course because of the side it’s on. It’s overgrown / not used and would be a great place for one.

We need this!! The dogs need to get off the new Delridge, Hiawatha and Madison fields! And I own two dogs, so please don’t tell me I don’t care for dogs. Just follow the rules.

Stadium… Lincoln Park… just get it done. The dithering on all the future parks scattered around West Seattle is maddening.

I think a multi-story complex should be built on this land to provide a permanent emergency shelter for Vets and a new location for the DAV non-profit.  The emergency shelter services currently provided at the VFW is not ideal – and the need is outgrowing the space. And DAV is south of the VFW on Delridge – a ljng walk from VFW or 2 buses.  On location for these services would show Vets our West Seattle appreciation for their service. Dogs 🐕 can be walked in local  neighborhoods.Vets deserve services.

This is where the driving range used to be, probably lots of old golf balls out there.

Location of the  old driving range, if I’m not mistaken.

I was hoping for Lincoln Park. That’s not all that walkable for me to 35th. Also not surprised it’s east of 35th.

Dog parks are a luxury, and owning a dog is a privilege. If you can make ANY site work, then do it, but they aren’t something that are NEEDED. They are “nice to haves”

Street parking is a luxury, it’s not needed, we should get rid of it for more free space and housing.

    Totally support the stadium site!!

Plentiful transit, parking, not used currently, walkable to a large and growing number of apartments, sited close to future light rail, not a natural area, close to the northern half of the peninsula.  Sounds like sound reasons to this to be the site.

This is great. I like this idea much more than Lincoln Park. It’s much more centrally located. Not as far for people on the north end of the peninsula. People towards the south can still go to Westcrest.
