ELECTION 2022: Your primary ballot is on the way

King County Elections just announced that the ballots for the August 2nd primary are in the mail – so voting is about to begin. No ballot measures for our area, but there are races to narrow down – including U.S. Senate, U.S. House District 7, Secretary of State, 34th District State Senator and 34th District State House Position 1, which has no incumbent as longtime State Rep. Eileen Cody is retiring. You can see all the candidates listed, with links to their websites, here. You can send your ballot back by postal mail, as long as it’s postmarked by August 2nd, or take it to an official dropbox (here’s where to find them). Not registered? It’s not too late – go here.

I really like Candidate Emily Alvarado to replace Eileen Cody as our State house representative. Her focus on child care and affordable housing I think is the right focus to help with the root of so many problems.

Leah Griffin is by far the better candidate. Just a cursory look at the candidate websites reveals pretty quickly who has the more broad-based support. Griffin’s policy proposals are deep and detailed, and cover a wider range of policy issues. They all grow from her background as a citizen lobbyist, at both the state and the federal levels. Alvarado’s are bland platitudes, laden with bureaucrat-speak, which reflect her bureaucratic background.

The list of endorsers is also revealing. Alvarado’s are institutional, and almost exclusively focused on a single issue. Griffin is supported by a wider range of elected officials and people active in the communities that make up the 34th District. Alvarado has been barely evident on the campaign trail. Leah Griffin has knocked on 9,000 doors, and continues to meet voters every day. There’s no question in my mind that she is the better candidate.

If you think we’re going in the right direction vote for the incumbents, if not vote for change. I think we need some change from our legacy politicians. Tiffany Smiley is running for the senate.

Tiffany Smiley has about as much of a chance of beating Patty Murray as she does of flapping her arms and flying to the moon. She is anti-choice in a 60-40 pro-choice state, and the Seattle Times reports that she trails in the latest poll by 18 points.

I agree that she’s a long shot, but she’s definitely got different priorities than Senator Murray. Like I said if folks are happy with how things are then the incumbent that’s been in office sine the 80’s is probably their best choice.

Datapoint, Sen. Murray was first elected in 1992.

To the US Senate, yes. But before that, she also served in the state House of Representatives, from the 1st Legislative District, starting in 1989.

Sorry, comment time is over.
