Does anyone know if the train that caused the back up coming into West Seattle through the 5-way intersection (Spokane/West Marginal/Delridge/Chelan) this morning is going to be a daily issue? It has blocked traffic at 7am the past 2 days.

Northbound W marginal way (especially the right lane) has been almost completely stopped. We’re moving a few feet every couple of minutes. Avoid this route if you can! It was like this yesterday as well, but today is much worse.

Anonymous,Trains causing this back up was supposed to be mitigated by closing the north leg of the five way intersection.  Per the approved EIS:   “6.2.1. Off-site Intersection Improvements Intersection of SW Spokane Street/West Marginal Way/Chelan Avenue SW. The analysis determined that increased vehicular traffic associated with either Alternative 2 or 3 would adversely affect operations at the five-legged intersection of SW Spokane Street/West Marginal Way SW/Chelan Avenue SW. In addition, increased train crossings of surface West Marginal Way SW, which is the north leg of this intersection, would exacerbate delay and congestion by increasing the number of signal preemptions of the intersection. Ultimately, when the terminal generates a high volume of trains (12 to 15 per week), it is recommended that the north leg of the intersection (West Marginal Way) be closed to all vehicular traffic except emergency vehicles. All traffic to and from Terminal 5, as well as local businesses at Terminal 7A, 7B, and 7C would then be directed to use the Terminal 5 Access Bridge, which has capacity to accommodate this diverted traffic.”   When I contacted SDOT, this was their response:  “To clarify, we are planning to make signal changes and other improvements at the intersection of SW Spokane Street/West Marginal Way SW/Chelan Avenue SW when we close the north leg. However, because doing that work would result in interruptions to traffic at the interchange, and because West Marginal Way SW is used as a West Seattle Bridge detour route, we are delaying the intersection work until after the high bridge reopens in mid- to late 2022.”I believe that north leg needs to be closed now, and the semi’s hauling fright should use the low bridge and access T-5 from the bypass. Per the EIS
