About the police response at Westwood Village

If you’re wondering about a big police response happening at Westwood Village right now – it involves what was described as a man with a sword outside the Chase branch at the center’s southwest end. Radio exchanges between dispatch and officers indicate it’s resolving quickly, though – the man is reported to be in custody after dropping the sword.

Perfectly normal behavior for Westwood Village.  Geeze

I always bring my sword to the bank.

Once again, WSB reporting gets right to the point.

The penitentiary is mightier than the sword.

I appreciate this sort of humor! 😂

Westwood is a place to avoid now. If you do go, prep for sword combat, car break in, and to dodge a fleeing shoplifter, and sadly you won’t be able to get 20% off your new toaster (RIP Bed Bath). But thankfully has the best teriyaki in the city at Toshi’s. Long live Toshi’s!

Back in the eighties and early nineties, there was a guy who used to walk around downtown with a sword sheathed on his back.  He was known as Conan.  Anyone else remember this?

    • Rhonda January 7, 2022 (3:00 pm)

I remember the huge SPD response one evening that shut traffic down in downtown for hours. They disarmed him with a fire hose and a ladder.

I remember him, he was one of the Hannah Barbarians!

      Yes, I remember Conan!

Yes, I remember Conan. He was an avid cyclist (road bike) who strapped a sword to his back while riding. He was buff and intense, in a steroid kind of way, so disconcerting on many levels.

Yep, seemed like a nice guy, always had a smile for us.

He was voted ‘favorite street person’ in The Stranger. He gave lessons in swordplay in empty lots.

Where do these people get swords? I never see any at McLendon’s or Home Depot, machetes yes but swords no. Good thing he dropped it for the police.

Must be somewhere. A couple hours later another precinct’s radio channel broadcast a report of someone else with a sword on the other side of the city. Odd day.

Somehow even people without full control of their mental faculties manage to order things on the internet. Swords, unregistered guns, whatever. It’s a scary world.

        • StopCuttingDownTrees January 7, 2022 (11:31 pm)

There’s no such thing as gun registration. Firearms registration is illegal under federal law due to the FOPA Act almost 40 years ago. Swords can be purchased online. Some malls still have the Excalibur knife and sword stores.

Arrghhh. Did he have a parrot on his shoulder?

  • Jon January 7, 2022 (6:34 pm)

Shades of Tony Allison, downtown in 1997. Sounds like they didn’t have to bring out the firehose this time.

    • 🤦‍♂️ January 7, 2022 (8:54 pm)

Thanks, that’s the guy I was trying to remember.

  • Ly January 7, 2022 (11:55 pm)

Geez. Wasn’t there a topic on why Westwood Village can’t be like U Village few weeks ago? Seems like some crime or other happens there every other week now. Who wants to shop there anymore. Pfft..

  • Rara January 8, 2022 (2:44 pm)

It’s sad I feel I have to carry my own weapon of pepper spray wherever I go now. For the just in case. Sigh. I hate that.
