POWER OUTAGE: 100+ customers out in West Seattle after pole hit

2:41 PM: Police are responding to a report of a driver hitting a pole, with downed wires, at 37th/Charlestown, and the City Light outage map shows 123 customers out as a result. Updates to come.

3:10 PM: We found the pole and wires, but no police and no car. There was no SFD callout so apparently no injuries.

3:38 PM: Thanks to Carolyn for texting to report that the Genesee/Avalon signal is flashing red.

4:36 PM: For some reason police have just been re-dispatched to this; this time the dispatch described the vehicle as a “white flatbed crane.”

4:45 PM: Commenter Linda, in the neighborhood, says the vehicle in question has stayed on scene since the incident 2+ hours ago.

5:17 PM: Commenters report the power’s back, and SCL’s map says the outage is down to 21 customers.

10:34 PM: Those 21 customers are still out.

No police or fire have shown up. Surprising since there are lines down on the street. The neighbors put up Road Closed signs to keep drivers away. City Light recording estimates power restored this evening.

Thank you neighbor for the roadblock! Shocked no city services have shown up yet.

I would again like to just point out that zero (0) cyclists have ever “taken out a light pole” and caused a massive power outage. The costs of automobiles in our society are beyond their sticker prices.

The situation has just been re-dispatched for some reason and the possible suspect vehicle was described this time as a “white flatbed crane.”

The driver of the truck (big construction vehicle) has stayed onsite the whole time.  City Light showed up 5 minutes ago and cleared some downed lines. But they just left again. Police just arrived.

Power is on, but Comcast internet is down (35 & Manning). Anyone else having problems?

Still no power on 37th and Genesee as of 4:30.

The outage map hasn’t shown a change, either.

Saw the power hit from 44th and Genesee.  My battery backup kicked in for a moment and everything was fine once the CenturyLink fiber unit came back up.

There was a large flatbed truck with a crane that had JUST left in front of our house picking up a large metal tub, from in front of our parking stripe due to the construction on our block. As I was leaving for an appointment, at the same time this truck with the bin were leaving. It had some issues getting around the coned off work they were doing on 37th. So it had to back up and adjusted. After adjusting his positioning to get down the street, He was able to drive down the street. He was hitting the trees a little bit in the process. He then turned left (west) on Charleston. As I started driving and got to the end of the block, I could see the power lines all swaying like something hit it. I turn the other way as I didn’t want to get electrocuted and needed to be elsewhere.
