TRAFFIC ALERTS: West Marginal/Highland Park Way; 1st Avenue South Bridge

1:56 PM: Julia texted to say the signals are not working at West Marginal/Highland Park Way – possibly because of utility work in the area – and so it’s an all-way stop, with backups in all directions.

2:42 PM: That’s fixed, according to Tami. But now there are multiple reports of an extra-long opening on the 1st Avenue South Bridge.

2:45 PM: After more than half an hour, WSDOT says the bridge is back down so surface traffic can resume.

Treat it like a four way stop.  Yeah, that’s gonna work out well.

Odd. Just came from there maybe 30-40 mins ago shortly after you guys posted this. It was all normal and functional. I didn’t see you guys report on this but there was about 3 or 4 big SPU trucks working on the signals, not sure what they were doing. This was at 10am today. Did you guys hear anything about that at all?

Did SDOT give any notice of the work at this intersection today?  Traffic was backed all the way up the hill as they had a lane closed off. Would have been nice to know to be able to kick down to Roxbury and avoid a half hour jam.

If it was planned work, it was unannounced. First we heard of anything going on there, utilities or traffic signals or otherwise, was when Julia texted a couple minutes before we published this at 1:56 pm. We really appreciate tips because no matter how many times I nag the city about “PLEASE let us know when something’s planned so we can warn people,” too often they don’t, unless, for example, somebody who gets a flyer or sees a sign tells us about it, and we subsequently hit up the agency/department for details. But this could have been unscheduled work…

Came through that intersection @10:45. Were 3 guys in bucket trucks working on top of poles/lights. Intersection wasn’t impinged on when i went through. Traffic lights were functioning normally at that time

Sort of adding to the chorus of minor observations, I was coming back from SeaTac and went through Westbound at what would have been 11:20-11:30 AM.  There were at least 2 SDOT pickups/bucket trucks and the person in the SE corner looked to be connecting a cable and was parked near the dome camera up there while doing it.  It looked like maybe Eastbound traffic was a bit backed up, but it was also backed up at a few places along the way so it was difficult to judge if that’s our new normal or work-related.

I was in the 1st Ave Bridge traffic from 220 – 2:45pm today; while the bridge was up! 25 minutes! That’s the longest I’ve ever had to wait; No Bueno!!!

West Seattle needs better public transit options to relieve congestion.  Too bad light rail is not going to be here for ten to fifteen years!

Sorry, comment time is over.
