TRAFFIC ALERT: Two crashes on 35th SW

That’s one of two crashes this past half-hour on 35th SW – no major injuries reported in either. This one’s at 35th/Thistle, with a driver going up onto the sidewalk and damaging the pole on the northwest corner. A few blocks north, a 3-car collision at 35th/Holden was being addressed by police on the west (southbound) side of the street.

Looks like the road diet didn’t prevent these crashes.

The road diet was to slow down traffic, no one said it would prevent all crashes.

Actually, it looks like Ray Charles is cracking up at those fools who crashed their cars.  Classic picture, I would say.

Road diet hasn’t slowed down traffic either. Changing speed limit to 25 has only given jobs to sign makers.

Maybe you speed over the new limit, but myself and others I’ve seen have adjusted our speed.

Are you the guy behind me throwing his hands up in the air when I hover around 25?

    • Jort June 7, 2020 (3:38 pm)

If someone is behind me and Vic or KM, you will be going 25, and they’ll deal with it. If it hurts peoples’ feelings to slow down, it’s time to take the keys away permanently.

I live on 35th south of Roxbury, and speeding is the worst it has ever been.

I’ve lived in WS my whole life. Remember when 35th used to have a 40 mph speed limit? That was back when it was two lanes. Now, it’s 25 MPH, for a one lane MAIN road. I know many people on here are really against speeding, apparently, but it just doesn’t make sense to me that a main road that’s only one lane needs to be the same speed limit as a side residential street.

Residential non-arterials are 20 mph, not 25 mph (unless otherwise noted). The purpose of the lower speed limits is to help save lives, and unfortunately 35th Ave SW has experienced traffic violence and loss of life. Slowing down is safer for everyone, even drivers. Transportation departments are slowly coming around to the idea that people have the right to get to their destination safely and maintaining an A-C level-of-service rating is no longer the bible on which DOTs manage traffic. There were a lot of things I remember from my childhood I’ve learned were unsafe/problematic/etc. and thankfully we can do something about it.

Of course, who’s not for savings lives? But people that do drive recklessly will continue to do so regardless of a sign. If there isn’t already, why not place a bigger emphasis on drivers education? I’ve never been in a car accident myself, but I know there are so many more factors involved in an accident than just speed. I’m surprised how easy it is to get a drivers license and how hard it is to lose one if you don’t follow the rules.

I couldn’t agree more. Speed limits are just one component, and luckily many comply. I think 35th severely needs a redesign—wide lanes contribute to speeding, we need physical features to calm from Roxbury to Fauntleroy.

Wtf is “traffic violence”? Are we just inventing terms now?

        • WSB June 8, 2020 (5:04 pm)

The term has been out there for at least four years.

    • waikikigirl June 8, 2020 (11:10 am)

Couldn’t agree more! My car can’t even move that slow (25mph) and I do not speed!

Sorry, comment time is over.
