SEEN OFF WEST SEATTLE: Coast Guard icebreaker USCGC Healy

Thanks to Stewart L. for the photo. That’s USCGC Healy, one of the Coast Guard’ two icebreakers. It’s based in Seattle and currently doing sea trials to get ready for its next mission.

Coming back from shakedown and sea trials. Will be heading back up to the Arctic this summer for her annual mission.

Very cool. Those things are beasts! A few months back my wife served as the medic for a few days on the Polar Star as it came up the coast from dry dock. Since the hull is so shallow, she said it constantly rocked side-to-side, so that when walking across it, it felt like walking in a funhouse – steep uphill, then downhill, then repeat. Not surprisingly, the most frequent medical complaint was seasickness :)
