They may have closed all or part of West Marginal Way.

West Marginal was closed coming from Spokane 30 minutes ago. I had to turn around and take Delridge.

Reopened a few minutes ago per SDOT and SPD – updating.

43 years ago I lost a very good friend to an auto accident in that very spot it looks to be in the curve by the cement plant. Slow down people your family and loved ones want and need you home.  While we may not know the cause And forgive me for jumping to conclusions but this does not happen at the posted speed limit if 40 mph!!

    • WSB February 7, 2020 (9:27 pm)

I don’t know anything about the cause but one thing to note -it happened during an incrediby intense downpour (and, here on the west-facing side, blast of wind). I noted the storm on Twitter – and moments later came the crash callout.

Also, except for new construction, Seattle streets don’t seem to have reflectors to mark lanes anymore. The reflectors were scraped off toward the end of the snow/ice fiasco in December 2009.

The average speed of drivers on West Marginal is well over the speed limit. 50+ is normal, even in terrible weather. All to line up at the major intersections at either end. It’s not necessary.

I agree. I drive that road every night on the way  home from work… I drive in the right lane because with me doing 40, I am consistently being sped by in the left lane like I’m standing still.  A couple nights ago a car that passed me, nearly T Boned a truck pulling out from one of the driveways..missed it by THAT MUCH. scared the crap out of me.

I also drive fairly often on West Marginal Way, and never noticed anyone going over 45ish.  Most people drive around the speed limit.  Perhaps the real problem was the poor drainage.  In heavy rain, very deep puddles form in a couple of spots, and it’s possible to imagine someone losing control after hitting one of those at 40 MPH, or swerving to avoid one and causing a multi-car accident.

Regardless of puddles heavy rain windy conditions… come on people drive the conditions weather sometimes sucks

I drive West Marginal for both commutes, every day. I go 43-45 because it’s not safe to go slower. People tailgate, cut each other off, and generally drive like they’re in a race. Suggesting most people drive near the speed limit it just not accurate. But the drainage is a problem in several spots.

Hope everyone recovers! What a photo – the top of the car was cut off & flipped over out of the way.

I used to see Port of Seattle police that were apparently enforcing the speed limit on West Marginal Way SW, but I haven’t seen that in maybe fifteen years. Dunno what changed regarding the lack of enforcement of the speed limit.

I saw this accident shortly after it happened…Nobody could get thru, They closed the road to, Saw LOTS of lights and emergency vehicles.  I was told no one got hurt…Not true! One is in serious condition.

I drive that stretch every day and it has become more dangerous since part of it went down to 1 lane. I’ve see drivers almost every day speed up in the right lane to pass those in the left going over the speed limit right before the lane ends. I knew something like what happened last night was inevitable. It’s so sad.

I live down here. Nightly summertime drag racing, commuters just off the freeway, eager to get home, and just common A-holes who don’t understand that big rigs pull out of those driveways and could give a turd about your Hyundai, and drive 60 because it looks like a straight away. I’ve looked back over the WSB records, and there’s a terrible accident once a rainy season

Car’s have been raceing on W Marg. for a LONG time. A buddy of mine in high school used to race there almost every weekend. That was 1972.

Sorry, comment time is over.
