Seen off West Seattle: A finned friend

Thanks to James Moore for sending the photo, taken around 11 this morning. He reports: “It’s not an orca – but I think it’s a harbor porpoise. It was traveling south just off the Arroyos all by itself and as you can see quite close to shore (they’re usually quite far out and in a group).”

This looks like a bottlenose dolphin. A few individuals from the California stock have been spotted in Puget Sound in recent years.http://www.cascadiaresearch.org/washington-state/second-puget-sound-bottlenose-dolphin-coastal-california-stock-identifiedIf you send your picture to Cascadia Research, they can confirm and perhaps identify the individual. Thanks for posting the picture!

After  looking around on the web I think your right.  Dorsal fin shape and size.  I learn something new every day or so.Thanks Jim

Hm, doesn’t look like a harbor porpoise to me…looks like an actual dolphin.  There were a couple bottlenose dolphins hanging around  the sound last year, wonder if they are back for a visit? The fin shape and color look right…

Could it be a minke whale?

That’s what I was thinking. Minke.

Looks like a Minke vs bottlenose.

Either way, bottlenose or Minke…it is nice to see and very lucky for you to get a picture!
