SPORTS: College volleyball tournament on Alki this weekend

Thanks to Peter for the tip! Though the University of Washington doesn’t play its home beach-volleyball games on Alki Beach any more – the school has its own facility now – it’ll be back on our shores this weekend. The Pac-12 North tournament is happening Saturday and Sunday, with matches set to start at 10 am both days – the Huskies play Cal in the first one Saturday. Here’s the schedule.

    Hopefully the weather will cooperate

Is it really beach volleyball if it’s not on the beach?

What about Alki Beach makes it not a beach?

I think that Azimuth was referring to the fact that UW now has their own facility which is not a beach — many of the NCAA programs actually refer to the sport as SAND volleyball specifically for that reason. Alki will ALWAYS be a beach, albeit it covered with cat litter instead of fine grain white beach sand, even in the rain. Might give our women an advantage over the southern squads who are used to sun . . .

Sorry, comment time is over.
