PHOTOS: Riding to Alki Elementary on Bike to School Day 2017

Two “trains” of enthusiastic bike riders converged on Alki Elementary this morning for this year’s Bike to School Day. Actually, some riders used other human-powered forms of transportation:

The volunteer crossing guard at 59th SW and Alki SW was Alki parent Ken Harmell. Two groups gathered to ride to school this morning, one from Me-Kwa-Mooks, one from Anchor Park.

Thanks to Chris Nutter, who coordinated today’s event, for letting us know about it!

Cute photos! My great hope is that someday our streets will be safe enough for children to ride to school — without having to rely on sidewalks!

Schools might need to invest in more bike racks/free bike parking.

Naah, the city will take care of that.  After taking out parking and right turn access on Cal and Alaska I’m pretty sure they’ll start taking out little used left turn lanes (only turns allowed in Seattle) for that so rest assured, you’ll be taken care of as far as places to park your bike. I usually lock mine to something that can’t be moved. But I guess that’s a lot to be asked for.

The sidewalk was the end of the route, just yards from the school. I’ll be adding a reader photo showing them on the Alki path/trail (which is how the Anchor Park group rode to the point where we show the parent guarding their crossing). – TR

Most important, thanks to those who organized–it was great to see about 30-40 kids on the Alki Trail this morning. Less important but worth mention, Bike to School is a good opportunity to teach and reinforce trail etiquette. As a commuter, I see cyclists, dog-walkers, joggers, etc. all over the path, with no recognition that others are using the path too. Appreciate teaching the kids good habits at a young age.

“The bicycle is a curious vehicle. Its passenger is its engine.”

Thanks to WSB for coming out to cover it.  Next year’s goal – no rain and a big group photo near the beach!  We will make sure you get the word.

Sorry, comment time is over.
