FAUNTLEROY BOULEVARD PROJECT: To break or not to break? Your thoughts sought on median options

In our coverage of the latest meeting about the Fauntleroy Way Boulevard Project, we noted that SDOT would soon be seeking feedback about two options for the main median – either with a break for traffic at 37th SW:

Or without:

Those graphics are now on the project page, along with a spot for you to quickly and easily tell SDOT which you would prefer – go here and scroll down. They’re accepting comments on this through May 31st.

Meantime, the project – involving Fauntleroy Way SW in The Triangle, between 35th SW and SW Alaska – is approaching the 90 percent design milestone. And project spokesperson Kate Cole tells WSB that the newest detailed traffic-study data should be available within a week or so – we asked her about it after the topic came up at last Thursday’s West Seattle Transportation Coalition meeting (our full report will be up tonight).

P.S. Fauntleroy Boulevard is the subject of the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce‘s next lunch meeting on May 11th – more info here.

How about just leave the street alone and spend the money elsewhere like repaving 35th and Delridge?  Do we get a choice in that?  Because that’s what we really want…not this stupid waste of money.

This project is a traffic congestion nightmare, both when completed and during construction. Almost everyone except SDOT and Lisa Herbold know this. No, we don’t get a choice like Andros wants. Reason and constituent preferences simply don’t come into the thinking of our City Council and the SDOT. They are far more authoritarian the the Trumpster in DC ever thought about becoming.

I drive this stretch daily and I can assure you that there are pot holes and road deterioration on Fauntleroy as well.  I no longer turn on 37th to get to my home because it’s so dangerous to do so and the potential of having a rear end accident is highly likely.  Far safer to turn on 35th to head south.  Because of my experience I would do the full median with no turn lane at 37th.

What “we want” seems to be a very debatable point…. This project is neither an SDOT nor Lisa Herbold project. It was proposed by the community, and called for in its neighborhood plan. It was supposed to have been fully funded and constructed several years ago, but got delayed. This is something that a number of residents and concerned community members have been working on for 15+ years. But, SURE, I’ll bet you know more about what everyone “wants” around here, right?

Experience is the key word, if you have it then you’ll be fine with the way things have been. No need to fix something that’s not broke. The real problem is the war on cars and the road diets that have been implemented throughout the city.

Just another friendly reminder that potholes and rough roads don’t kill people, but bad street design and insufficient pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure actually does kill people.

I’m sorry that potholes are annoying and hurt peoples’ feelings, but Fauntleroy is long overdue for improvements for safety.

Sorry, comment time is over.
