8:41 AM: Passing West Seattle, northbound in Puget Sound right now, that’s the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68).

8:47 AM: The carrier is moving fast – visible from Alki but it won’t be for long. It’s been preparing for deployment (from Bremerton) for a while, and just had a change of command a few weeks ago.

Phone shot from downtown – it dwarfed a ferry it just passed by!

Could it be that the tensions created by the new commander and chief with China and Russia have caused a change of plans

The Nimitz was already set to deploy early this year (see end of this October story from Navy PA). Where it’s going, and whether that’s a change in plan, isn’t usually disclosed.

Tread softly but carry a big stick.  The Nimitz is definitely our Nation’s “Big Stick.”  God speed to the women and men who volunteered to serve their country and are now an integral part of the human machine that make that GBGB “great big gray boat,” move effortlessly through the Seas of the world.
