UPDATE: Road flooding following West Seattle downpours

11:08 PM: Thanks for the photo and the tips – Fauntleroy and Raymond [map] is one of the spots that has flooded worse than usual during tonight’s deluge. (We’ve already advised one person who called about it to report it to Seattle Public Utilities, whose 24-hour dispatch is 206-386-1800.) We’re also hearing about deep water at spots including Harbor/Spokane. So if you’re headed out any time soon, be extra careful, and if you see what looks like a totally flooded roadway ahead, you’re advised not to drive/ride through it.

\11:30 PM: And just five minutes after we published that, the National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for areas including Seattle, until 2:15 am. Meantime, Darlene mentions in comments that the Delridge ramp to the bridge is swamped too.

12:15 AM: Michelle reported in comments that her husband and neighbors cleared the Fauntleroy/Raymond drains, and she sent a photo:

Meantime, another “standing water” report on the scanner – 9200 block of 35th SW.

The ramp from Delridge to the bridge was about a foot under water. 11pm

Thanks! That’s a frequent flood spot, too, but hadn’t heard anything until your comment.

When I went by on my bike at around 5pm last night a man was clearing the leaves from the catch basin.  That’s typically the problem.

Thanks to my husband, some other friendly neighbors, the drains on Fauntleroy and Raymond are all clear! 👍🏻

I drove 35th Ave SW going south across from WS Stadium around 10:30 pm & it was a pool; my SUV almost stalled!

I was out for a walk the evening lots of plugged up drains was able to do partial clean with my boots and later at another a flattened aluminum can. Back on the way home at the corner noticed the storm drain completely debris free but I also sweep and rake the leaves along the curbline out in front of my home. Thanks for your service out there. I believe SPU has a crew of some 30 people only dedicated such work.

Speaking of drains being clogged, does anyone else notice that “landscaping maintenance” crews and neighbors both routinely blow leaves from the yards they are working directly into the street?   Anytime I speak to people doing this, I get rude to unfriendly replies.  It’s so common.  Maybe at some point it will become more acceptable to not do this–like cleaning up after one’s dog.

#Zephyr, Remember the days when we actually swept up the leaves and spread them in our garden to keep plants warm and provide nutrients for the soil?  Actual physical labor!

Today they fire up a gas powered blower and lazily guide the leaves into the street….no longer their problem.

  • Claudia Weisz October 27, 2016 (8:17 am)

Best thing to do with leaves is to blow or rake them into your garden beds.  They break down in the winter and improve the soil for your plants, protect them from freezing weather.  Your plants and trees will thank you.

The section of Delridge under the (high) bridge when approaching the low bridge has a lot of flooding, too. Be careful out there!

  • Trudy S October 27, 2016 (1:17 pm)

Was surprised by the delridge flooding on the way to the lower bridge this morning. I drive a camry and was not happy to be stuck driving through this. Had no cell with me to call it in.  From this it seems it was a known problem. No signs were up.Did anyone call it in?

I agree with the comment that Yard service companies not putting leaves in the street. Maybe time to hire companies that state online they will not do this.

I called it in this morning at about 7:30am. City said they’d create a work order.

A couple comments. I have watched someone out clearing that drain on multiple occasions. I assume they are the same good neighbors that did so yesterday . Thank you whoever you are many times over.

I am a gardener/landscaper by profession. I will also attest to the fact that I see many others blow to the street while the company I work for does not do so. I honestly have thought it was not only on principle and for the leaf mulch but that it was law! I will check this out and let you know. Now I understand why so many neighbors approach and thank us.

I take my gas blower and blow my lazy neighbor’s leaves out into the street.  After years of cleaning them up…I’m done. The tree’s in my yard do not drop leaves.

Most of my neighbors should have bought a condo, None of them want to do yard work, or ever clean up the leaves. I could only imagine what the inside of their house looks like.

Thanks to the one Neighbor down the street,  keep the drain cleaned out.

Sorry, comment time is over.
